I should note that working with Mr. Rodriguez was a pleasure. His recommendations for what was needed were knowledgeable and spot on. He did not include a bunch of work that really didn't need to be done, as I experienced with other job bidders. He has a gentle, pleasant, and flexible personality. He communicates effectively. "No matter what I say, Rules on Angies list are not changeable, they will stay the same , I complained 2 or 3 times about some people giving me bad reviews and lying on those reviews and they told me there is nothing they can do about it, so, having an Angies list membership, allows you to lie if you want, That is the way I feel, I am sorry but, this is not fair."
Follow on to painting upstairs: Juan and I emailed the night before to confirm his start time. 2 hours after his start time, no Juan. After a quick text, turns out Juan did not like my B grade for punctuality so he didn't want to work for me anymore. Juan did not call/text/email me so I spent time waiting for a contractor who did not have the courtesy to contact me that he was not coming to do the agreed upon job. Juan has every right to fire a customer, but at least give me the courtesy of telling me so I don't waste my time waiting for nothing.
Juan is a good painter, but his time management needs work. I understand things come up, but if he just told me he was going to be there at noon instead of 8:30, all would be good. Instead he just doesn't show up and doesn't notify you. I take time off of work to be at home to help him move furniture so he can paint. Apparently the bad reviews for Juan are because of a lack of communication on showing up to do the work, not for the actual work. Part of doing business is communication with your customers and when you plan to actually show up. Apparently a B in punctuality is fatal to doing business with Juan, even though his overall rating was an A. I unfortunately have to change my review to reflect the less than professional notification of him not wanting to work for me.
"I don't understand how you can text me at 10:34 after I sent you a text at 10:33 and not answering my second text 2 minutes after at 10:36, you said you can not answer the phone in church but you did text me at 10:34 and not responding my text at 10:36, you go to church and you are lying here in your review just to affect my business, I have all those texts in my phone, so I can prove what I am saying here, now, you did not appreciate that I made an exception and I was going to do your work in my day off on Sunday because you said you don't have time during the week, and also I was going to make only $40 dlls in profit and I was going to do 2 coats of paint on that door, this means that I have to wait several hours waiting for the first coat to dry to apply the second coat, I don't know any company that takes a job of 1 door and do the work on Sunday when they must be resting or having a good time with family, a bad review is what I get in exchange from you, but like I said before, future possible customers will not find a person (that I was hired for) in my reviews who complains about the type of work that I always do, every single customer who knows my work, rate my work with an "A". That is why I always have a lot of work."

I originally called Juan to give me a quote on a lot of work, most notably, my baby nursery. This was in late May with work to be done in a few weeks. Early June comes around, I touch base with Juan, he tells me he can't paint my house because he's got a huge backlog. Fair enough. My wife and I had planned this so we could have enough time before the baby came, so it really wasn't that big a deal. He told me 6 weeks was the earliest he could do it. OK, not ideal, but we would make it work.
6 weeks roll around. I call him, we agree on a date and I am thinking we are good.
The date comes, it was the week of July 13th. I call to confirm the day before, no answer. But my wife was able to get him and confirm. Next day comes, he texts my wife 5 minutes before we agree to meet and says he's ill and cant make it. Fair enough, we all get sick. I ask him to please keep me posted on when he will be able to come, assuming it would be in the next day or so.
Next day goes by, no communication. Day after that, same thing. Several days go by with me trying to reach him and no response. Finally, I get a text from his wife- which, I have no idea if it was actually her- saying Juan needed surgery and was in Mexico, I should get another painter. Ok, so at this point, I am screwed, but assuming he's actually really sick, then it is totally understandable and I feel for the guy.
One month goes by and I decide to check Angie's List to confirm if this story is reasonable or not (this was last week). Looks like he had done jobs since then. So, now I am kinda frustrated. So I try and call, no answer. I text. No answer. Wait a few more days, call and text. No answer. Finally, I send one final text asking why he's avoiding my call. He responds, saying he's sorry/busy and he would call me later that evening (this was last Saturday). No call.
I have tried to call/text since then and gotten nothing. So, here I am, still trying to get the stuff I wanted him to do, done. Yet I get no responses. I honestly have no idea why he is not responding. I have been nothing but respectful and professional to him, even referring him to all my friends. Sad thing is, if he were to call me back, I would still want him to do my work!
So, if this review seems confusing as h***, well it's not you, it's just a frustrated reviewer. Prior to this latest interaction, would I have recommended Juan?, 100%. Now, unfortunately no. Acting like this is just unacceptable.
"Like I told you before, I had a surgery and I called my account manager on Angie's list to ask him to make my business invisible to customers while I was recovering from surgery,(you can verify this calling him) that way I don't get more work that I was not able to handle, I was just trying to finish my lined up jobs before I get more work and at the same time trying to get in shape doing 2 small jobs, I understand that you are upset because you really wanted me to do your work and I was not in condition of doing your work, but trying to make people believe that I lied to you and I did not get a surgery, that is offensive, other people were affected when I was sick and all those people understood and they called someone else, your intension here is obvious, I am sorry for getting sick and not doing your work. If I did not answer your call is because you called me very unprofessional when I was feeling really bad, I hope you never feel the pain that I was feeling that day."

Amazing - so easy to work with, very personable. We struggled with picking the right color at first and he actually painted one room and my wife and I looked at it and said "oh no - we don't like that color", Juan didn't complain, wasn't frustrated he just told us to let him know when we had the color ready. He didn't even charge us for re-painting the room (only the 2 gallons of paint he bought for that room). His attention to detail was great - great paint lines. His patching work left us speechless - I thought when I patched stuff it looked "good/ok" I feel like my patching is horrific compared to his work.
We wanted the job to look great and wanted to stick to a budget and he ended up painting the house with one coat and it looked good and it ended up saving us money.
Now when it came to touch ups - I am pretty anal and I thought for sure he wouldn't be happy when I pointed out some of the tiny spots I found to my surprise Juan never complained or made excuses he just said he would fix it and he did!
