Although it took some time to order the floors (this wasn't Kurt's fault, the wood was in high demand and on back order), Kurt kept in touch with us and always returned calls in a timely manner. When it came time to install the floors, Kurt was accomodating and sensitive to our schedules. Once the work started, it went very smooth and I was impressed with the work Kurt's team completed.
The only issue we had was the small trim that goes along the floors and the current baseboards. It seemed like a lower grade quality of trim so my husband and I ended up buying our own trim.
The floors came out absolutely beautiful. The look, quality and craftsmanship of the wood has far exceeded our expectations.
Southwest Flooring was very flexible regarding my requests for quotations including pricing 3 different quality levels of carpeting as well as providing the quotation in an itemized fashion. When I agreed to the quotation, the materials were ordered. The work was scheduled at my earliest convenience.
The ceramic tile work was completed first as material was immediately available, and carpeting was installed at my next available time. The tile is a great improvement to the existing flooring in the house.
Carpeting work included removal of the existing carpeting. This work was completed quickly with the work team maintaining a clean environment as they proceeded. All materials were bundled up an removed as the job progressed. Prior to installing new carpeting and padding, the existing floor area was cleaned. The new flooring was installed, and vacuumed.
The work was completed professionally, and I am pleased with the finished product.
Since this is a high traffic area were going back and forth between going with unfinished solid hardwood vs. prefinished solid hardwood vs. engineered wood. Kurt took the time to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of each and show us samples, without pushing us one way or another. For various reasons we decided on unfinished solid hardwood (easier to repair, and the fact that the original hardwoods in the other parts of our house had been in place for 60 years and still looked beautiful). We had finished to Golden Oak and two coats of polyurethane.
The area for installation was actually an addition made to the house around 1978. The people that built this addition did a poor job of tying the block and beam foundation into the original part of the house. I knew this would be a problem area going into the project, and I was impressed with how Kurt's team handled it. Without going into the minute details, his crew took a full two days to troubleshoot and then work out the best solution for insuring a level tie-in. I have no doubt that other companies would have just thrown some float over it, which would worked OK for the short term but over time would have broken down and caused more issues. Again I was just impressed and grateful that the crew gave the attention required to this area rather than just slapping the floor down. In other words, they did it the right way.
I was also impressed with how well the crew worked together. They really seemed to complement each other well and had a great flow to the job.
The final job was just outstanding. We have since had people over, including a 30-35 person party for my daughter's first birthday, and have received multiple complements (as well as a couple who have asked for the name of who we used).
The fact is that there are a lot of people who can install wood floors (of course there are also a lot of people out there who can screw it up), but the difference between Southwest Flooring and other contractors was simply that I trusted Kurt and his guys. They are all just hard working, upstanding people who want to do you right. This was the first impression I had when I initially met Kurt, and this impression carried through until the end of the project. And in fact it carried on even beyond the project; a couple of days after the floor was complete we had another contractor in there, who accidentally scratched our newly-finished floors when he stepped on a step ladder and it slid. The scratches weren't huge but they were in a prominent location and, hey, the floors were new and we didn't want to start out like this! I called Kurt to ask if he could send one of the guys out to fix it, fully expecting of course to pay a fee for their troubles. A few days later Javier, one of the crew members, came back out, fixed it, and would not take any money from us. He didn't have to do this, but just went above and beyond.
I don't recommend contractors often because I've done so in the past (for family members and such) only to hear that they did a poor job for them. However I will without hesitation recommend Southwest Flooring Direct to any friend or family member, because I know they will be taken care of.
Also Kurt recommended an additional contractor to install spindles and some construction work; Billy Parker, who was also first class.
I called Kurt and he spent close to 20 minutes just talking to me on the phone. Most contractors won?t even talk to you until they see the house. I was able to get him to come out the same day to evaluate my needs. We were on tight deadline and I explained what I needed and asked what products would work. We went with an engineered hardwood to match the color of the existing floor and make it as flush as possible. Most people would not even notice the difference in height. When everything was done the floors looked fantastic.
Kurt is an excellent communicator and was always in touch. When it came time to make a decision he proposed a number of solutions and pros and cons of each one. Kurt?s team was also very nice and professional. It is nice to have people with smiling faces and good attitudes come into your home.
I would recommend Kurt to anyone and can honestly say I now have ?My Wood Floor? guy for the future.
