The furnaces were less reliable and tended to need some work each year.
The AC just needed some coolant, but I had requested an estimate for the new units prior to requesting the service on the AC.
In general, it is hard to say if spending $300 on recharging the AC would have lasted 2 months or 2 years. (We know it wouldn't last longer than 2 years based on history and the fact the AC had a slow leak)
Ron was the technician that came out and we discussed the options.
In addition to just replacing the current units, we wanted to improve the air flow, including an addition over the garage.
We discussed the sizing of the units, SEER ratings,, etc.
He took the time to present a number of options, including minimizing the replacement parts and just repairing the furnace and fan units upstairs.
Once I made a choice of which option I wanted to go with, Ron made some calls and they began the installation work within a couple of hours.
They actually worked on the installations until around 9:30pm and then spent extra time working on some solutions to the air flow.
Changes to the air flow were made and we set up a follow-up service call for the following week to make any adjustments.
In the follow-up service call we reported that the air flow was dramatically improved in the Master bedroom area, but wasn't quite working as well in the other bedrooms.
Ron made some additional adjustments for us and currently the air temperature seems to be fairly close in all of the rooms.
When the heat of the summer gets here we will have a better idea of how well the rooms are balanced, but for now we are very happy with the work performed.
Ron and his associate were professional, focused, and helpful.
The only reason for the "B" rating on price is that without some else providing another estimate.....I can only base it off of the information gained from friends and the internet. However, I believe the price to be very competitive.
I was not smart in that I looked them up online and because I saw they advertised BBB and Angie's List I just called them.....never ever again. I will ALWAYS start with Angie's List. Too bad Angie's List can't make them pull their name off their home page.
OC Residential sent out a tech who was just frighteningly incompetent. His diagnosis was to replace an electrical part in the compressor (outside) and while he was working on it, my wife and I heard a loud bang from the thermostat inside the house. This was followed by the acrid smell of something electrical burning. When I notified him of this he stated that the A/C needed an additional part at hundreds of additional dollars. I replied that I wanted a second opinion and came back inside.
My regular repairman came out the next day and told me that the OC Residential tech had cross-connected the 110 volt line to the 24 volt line in the air conditioning system. As a result, it blew out not only the thermostat, but the electrical circuit in the compressor and air handler in the attic.
I told him that the pilot light on my water heater wasn't staying on. I let him know that I had looked up the symptoms online, and that most of the websites I'd viewed said it was my thermocouple. It's a repair that is described as fairly inexpensive and easy to do yourself. However, I was willing to pay the extra money to let a professional do it, and not monkey around with it myself.
He listened, nodded, and said he'd check it out. I got the sense soon after that he was unsure of himself, or nervous. After watching him try to light the pilot light several times, I pointed out to him that he hadn't moved the dial to "Pilot" and therefore wouldn't be able to light it until doing so. He nodded, and tried again and was able to turn on the light. Then he messed around with the temperature gauge on the unit, watching the light as he did so. I didn't say anything, but I had a sense that he was looking to turn the gas on to fire up the heater. After a couple minutes, he did look around, locate the gas control dial, and turn it on.
I told him that the light would stay on for an indeterminate length of time, and that he probably would not be able to wait long enough to witness it blow out. He nodded and watched for a minute, then asked how old my unit was. I told him it was about 6 or 7 years old. He said that was pretty old. He then said he'd go back to his truck and write up some options for me.
When he came back, he said, "okay, let's tell you how much it will cost to replace your water heater." I said that I didn't want to replace my water heater. I asked why he didn't think it was the thermocouple. He said, oh, well, it might be your thermocouple, or it might be your gas valve, but there's no way to know.
I was a little dumbfounded, and asked how much it would be to replace a thermocouple. He said it was around $300. I'd just seen articles saying that the part cost $15, and the labor about 15 minutes. The articles may have been a couple years old, so I'm sure it's a little pricier, but I doubt it hit $300.
Overall, it just bothered me that he seemed to not know what he's doing, that he did very little by way of diagnosis (or, at least, he didn't bother to explain any of it to me), and he immediately jumped to replacing the full unit, as his first "option."
He did, however, choose not to charge me the $39 fee for the visit, which he could have done. I probably would have argued with him if he had, but he didn't put me in that position. The "C" rating is a reflection of the appointment-setting courtesy at the beginning, the punctuality, and the waiver of the fee at the end. But the thing I needed--someone with expertise to diagnose the problem with my water heater, explain it to me, and present me with fair and reasonably-priced options--I didn't get.
