Description of Work: They reorganized our 3-car garage with shelving, cabinets, slat wall, overhead storage, pulley systems for our ladders and bicycles and wheelbarrow, and flooring. They were on time, polite, and they did an excellent job. There was a problem with their billing, but they caught it and immediately notified us of the error and corrected it. The results were amazing. Although it was not an inexpensive project, we chose this company over the others because of their attention to our needs and what we wanted to do, the materials and workmanship are excellent quality, and the representatives and workmen were knowledgeable and partnered with us to achieve the results we wanted.

Description of Work: We purchased the deal for a closet at our business and ended up not needing it. We kept it because we thought we might use it in the future. It expired and we spoke to the company that week. They said there wasn't anything they could do, but the paid value would never expire and so there was not rush to use it. They also said that it was possible that they may go ahead an honor it anyway, at the time of purchase, whenever we got around to using it, so it didn't hurt to ask. I made a note of this (with the person's name and date) on my printed voucher for my own records and to remind myself in the future. The future is now the present and we are building a small apartment home and wanted to use what money we had put in on a closet. I contacted someone in April 2014 and set up an initial meeting at their facility. All of the people I have spoken with on the phone and who greeted me at the office were very friendly and professional. I can not say the same for the person who met with me that day. He was very short and impersonal. It felt as if I was a waste of his time. I tried to ignore it and thought he must be having a bad day. He gave me an estimate and told me to contact them when the closet had drywall and they would come out for final measurements. He said it would take about 2-3 weeks to install after the measurements were taken. A few months later, August 2014, I called the office (spoke with a very nice, friendly woman) and scheduled an on-site visit. I explained to the woman that the person who came would need to enter through the front building (which is an eye clinic). The man arrived (the same man from the first meeting) and drove directly to the back and helped himself to the back building. Eventually he walked around to the front and entered as I had originally asked he do. He was very rude and short in responses. We went out to the back building where the project would be and he took measurements, then back to the front office for him to draw up the plans. He hardly said anything, just picked a seat and started writing. Eventually, feeling very awkward, I went to another table to continue my own work. He gave me the final drawing and numbers and asked for a credit card. He had not taken anything off for our Angie's List voucher (not even the paid value). I asked him about that and he deducted it. I showed him on my voucher where I had written the note from the woman on the phone saying to ask at time of purchase if they would honor the whole thing. He said no. Which is fine. I'm not expecting anything extra, I just didn't appreciate how I was being treated. I gave him my credit card which he wrote down and then called his office. He then said it would be the end of September before they would be able to start the job (over 6 weeks). We were scheduled to move in in 1-2 weeks (so from the timeline previously given, we knew we would possibly be without a closet for a week or so) which would mean over a month without any place to hang our clothes. I showed him the note from our first visit where he had said the lead time was 2-3 weeks. He said, that's just an estimate it changes all the time. We asked the man if there was any way we could move that sooner, and once again we got the short, stern "NO." We asked if there was any way to get on a cancellation list (if there were other jobs that were cancelled we could be bumped up) and he said yes. I asked how to get on that list, and he said "everyone's on it" I would just have to wait and see. My husband and I excused ourselves for a moment and decided this was not going to work (the timing, the cost, the terrible customer service). We own a business and there is no way we would treat our customers this way. I don't know if they just have so much business that we don't matter, but that is no reason to treat people poorly. We asked for a refund and he said we would need to call Angie's List. He closed his notebook and walked out. It was one of the rudest encounters I've experienced. I was shocked because I had read such great things about this company and everyone else I had worked with had been wonderful. It was just very disappointing. I was excited about the design plan and the amount of storage they were going to be able to create, but I can not give my money to a company with terrible customer service. It is so crucial in independent business and I want to support those businesses who value their customers.

I am the owner of SpaceMan and I am very sorry about how our SpaceManager made this Angie’s List member feel. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect and courtesy. A business that doesn’t meet this minimum service threshold should not be rewarded with the client’s business. I appreciate the time and effort this member took to craft this review, and provide such valuable feedback to us. As we like to say, the great reviews feel nice, but the bad ones can makes us better. The bad reviews are the most valuable. So thank you, [member name removed], for giving us the opportunity to improve. I had a one-hour conversation with this particular SpaceManager this morning about the experience, identifying where it may have gone wrong and what he might have done differently to create a different outcome. It was an excellent dialog. We can’t change what happened, but we can be more aware of how others perceive our responses and body language. More awareness, and continuing education helps us raise the bar a little bit every day. We recently conducted a DISC assessment for all our employees so they understand their personality type with respect to others, and how we all need different information packaged in different ways to be comfortable making decisions. I offer no excuses. For those reading this review and response, I suggest that we are a very good company with excellent SpaceManagers, and one of them had a bad day. We have 107 Angie’s List reviews, with 92 A’s and 11 B’s. We have 4 times as many reviews as our next competitor in the closet business, with a much higher % of A’s. Of the reviews that were done by folks for whom we actually did the work (91 total), we have 82 A’s and 8 B’s, and no D’s or F’s. None of this makes the Angie’s list member who wrote this review feel any better – I get that. We missed an opportunity to create another raving fan of SpaceMan, and likely will not get another crack at it. I appreciate the opportunity to respond, and I hope the member was able to get her project completed with another company, in her desired timeframe.

Description of Work: The cabinet was expensive but it looks very nice. It added a lot of storage space to our spare bedroom without taking up a lot of space to do it. The cabinet looks very nice and is professionally built. Much nicer than anything we could have ordered in a catalog or the screw together furniture which is often a lot cheaper. I would recommend this company and plan to use them again.

Description of Work: Spaceman did an excellent job installing a pantry. When I first called they couldn't fit me into install for a while which was a little tough on my schedule. However a cancellation came open and they called and rescheduled. They were prompt. My pantry looks fabulous. Way better then it did and much more useable. Great job!

Response from SpaceManager Closets
The installation process on this job was a bit of a mess. We had miscommunication between our designer who designed the cabinetry and our fabrication guys who manufacture and install the systems. During the installation, Mr. {removed member name} noticed that the cabinetry was not being built the way he and our designer intended. We stopped the installation and made sure we understood what was required. We redesigned the space, manufactured the new parts required, got them to the job and completed the installation. There is no denying that the process was messy, the installation took many hours longer than it should have, and it was inconvenient for the customer. On the positive side, given that the error did happen, we fixed it as quickly as humanly possible. We were able to remake the parts and finish the job the same day that we started it. I understand Mr. & Mrs. {removed member name} disappointment on how this job went. We were disappointed as well. This was the third space we have done for them over the years. The master closet and overflow closet went much smoother, without any serious design issues like the garage had.
