When we began talking with Mr. Ayala, representing R&S Resourses, refining our contract, he was very professional, attentive to our calls, and had pictures of other completed projects. Our contract called for payment to be made in 4 steps as itemized-steps of progress was made and completed. My husband works contract work as a quality nuclear inspector all over the USA, and himself was to start a new project out-of-state the day our remodeling project was to begin. The last words Mr. Ayala told my husband before he left was that he would keep in contact by phone or email on a timely basis and provide pictures as work progressed. Texts, calls and emails were never returned to my husband, nor were pictures ever forwarded by Mr. Ayala.
Work began on time and workers were there everyday for the first two weeks during demolitation and reconstruction. It became apparent after the first 2-days that Mr. Ayala would not be there everyday to check on progress or give direction. I knew Mr. Ayala had other projects going but after those 2 weeks, workers would only come for 1/2 day or sometimes not for 2 or 3 days in a row. I had never been through a remodeling job this big myelf, so I had no idea what should be done in what order, but at the end of the day after workers left that day, I took pictures myelf of the progress and sent them to my husband's email.
Work went according to the contract itemized process for the first 2 payments, but it was slow and I felt they would not make the six weeks date. Finally a tile installer and his helper showed up to install the shower marble tile and decorative wall trim. He started the tile project, but called me to come back there when he could not figure out how to cut the tile to correct size to make the diamond-point trim as laid out in the detailed drawings. After seeing his delima and I was tired of the long delay of work, I decided to not have him try the decorative diamond-point, but instead have him install 3 rows of the 2x2" marble tiles that would have bordered the diamond-points. I went back to check the work before the end of the day and found he had not put up the 2x2" marble tiles, but had instead put up the porcelian small shower floor tiles as the decorative surround. I told the tile installer those were porcelian floor tiles and to quit working until Mr. Ayala could come to the project. Then when the tile installer asked me what was the difference between porcelian and marble, I knew we were in trouble.
I had noticed about the 4th week that only the items we purchased were being installed and I was starting to get excueses from Mr. Ayala on why materials he was to provide were not arriving for installation. Finally, Mr. Ayala came to ask for an advance on third payment from us. He was running short from not being paid from his other on-going projects and he could not purchase the items he was to provide for our project. He promised this early payment would put him back on track to finish our project on-time. At this point, Mr. Ayala had not purchased the doors, not purchased the shower glass, not purchased the granite, nor purchased nor installed all the crown molding, or purchased the paint. My mistake was taking him at his word that he would purchase the rest of what was called for in the contract and finish our remodel after I paid him the 3rd installment. A few days later worked stopped completely. Then it had been 8 weeks since construction had began, or remodel is about 70% complete and my husband was now home from his work assignment. We tried to contact Mr. Ayala many times to come and talk with us and tell us when and how he was going to complete our remodel from h***. He finally contacted us about 2 weeks later and made an appointment to come see us. My husband put together a line item detail of 27 items Mr. Ayala still had to furnish and complete. He agreed to a completion date for each line item and signed this contract addendum that ensured all items would be completed within 30 days of that date or he agreed he would be in breach of contract and we could then go to other companies to complete this mess. We never heard from Mr. Ayala again after the contract adendum completion date of July 30, 2012 had passed where he had attempted to complete only 2 of the 27 line items. We were afraid of putting all our faith into one main contractor again, so we hired 3 different companies to complete different parts of the project, and it was finally completed the by the end of September 2012.
When we called the electrical subcontractor Mr. Ayala hired for our project to come back to finish installing the electrical lighting fixtures after all other work had been completed, he informed us that Mr. Ayala had never finished paying him for his part of the contract for our project.
We would not hire Steve Ayala or R&S Resources again for any type of work to be done at our home nor would we give either of them a recommendation.
