Heating and Air Conditioning Service
On April 4, 2012, A Mesa representative spent four hours doing a maintenance check on eight a/c units. This service call for all eight units was billed at four hours. The invoice suggests the evaporator coils were in fact dirty. Later that day the unit in question was making horrible noises. This was the only unit we had a tenant in at the time. The same representative came out the same day and claimed the unit was overcharged. He then proceeded to let freon out of the unit into the air. The unit was then stabilized.
On April 30th, 2012 a second Mesa representative was called out because the same unit was not blowing cold air. This service representative found a large freon leak by the unit. He also found the compressor was froze and non repairable. I questioned responsibility of missing the leak and the 30 day warranty. He told me to talk with the office. The invoice for this call was billed at 4 hours of labor. (the time it took the first person to check all 8 units the first call)
Upon my due diligence and investigation I found several issues. First, the evaporator coils were in fact not checked for any of the units. Most of the units had to be cut into to even evaluate the coils and they were not. I have since had another company come out to clean them and have written testimony of how dirty they were. Second, I have found it is recommended by these guide lines to never charge an A/C unit with freon if the evaporator coils are dirty. This can lead to a unit being overcharged. A result of an overcharged unit and restricted air flow it can result in a compressor failure. In addition, it also states when freon leaks out of the unit this can compound the problem. This I felt was a result of missing the leak by the first service person.
Therefore I felt some responsibility be taken on the part of Mesa. I am a fair person, I was not after them to replace the entire unit, I was however asking they take some responsibility for this problem. Each call fell withing 30 days of eachother.
I made an attempt to discuss my concerns with Brian the manager at Mesa. He immediately became defensive. His final comment and last words were  " If you are not going to by a compressor from me then we have nothing to talk about".  I then sent an email explaining my concerns and asking for them to deduct 5 ibs of freon and 3 hours of labor from the to invoices as a compromise. I talked with Hillary who is in charge of accounts payable. She said to send it to her and she will send it to management. They refused my request and refuse to discuss this situation. Their explanation for not adhering to the 30 day warranty was the accusation I had someone else come out and look at the unit within those thirty day. This is patently a false statement. I am know being taken to small claims court by Mesa Mechanical.
I come from a very customer service intensive business. Unlike mesa, I have to deal with my customers on a repeat basis. I feel if I were a large company which provided Mesa repeat business I would not have been treated so poorly. I have learned a great deal about a/c units and I will not allow another ac company to do a service check with having the energy star maintenance check guidelines in my hands. I will not be using Mesa Mechanical again and I will fight for my rights as a consumer.
