The day before the work is to be done I called their front office asking at what time I can expect them to show up for the work.
I was told to call after 8:30am on the day of appointment to find that out. Guess what, they showed up at 8am on that day. It is good thing that I was at home. There were 4 of them. So, they finished the work real quick. They were careful to make sure that the cut down trees did not fall on the house. They cleaned up all the debris thoroughly from the backyard. But the only problem was that they did not clean the yard on either side of my driveway. They used machinery to crush all the branches into small bits. A lot of that debris fell on my yard which I did not notice while they were still there. I had to clean it up myself.
I got a call the same day to ask if they can send someone the next day to grind the stumps. I was told that I don't need to be there. I agreed. On the morning I realized that I have leave the door to the backyard open. There are two entry ways. I called their front office to let them know which one I left open. The lady that answered did not appear to be very interested and said that the workers have already left. I asked her to contact and let them know. She did not respond. The work was not done that day.
The next day I sent email asking when the stump grinding will be done. The worker that supposed to do that work on the previous day called and said that he showed up but the gate was locked. So, the message I tried to give their front office was not passed on. I have no idea why he did not call me if he found the gate closed. Anyway he asked if he could come in 30 minutes to get that work done. He showed up and quickly and very nicely completed the work.
So, here are the takeaways from my experience:
I was able to effectively communicate via email but not by phone.
David, who gave the estimate is friendly and helpful.
The 5 workers that did the actual work were outstanding professionals..
The front office needs to improve.
I could not find out from them when I can expect the work to start.
When the gate was not open, I should have been contacted.
My message about which gate was open was not communicated to the worker. It would have been of no use anyway. There
was no communication about size of the grinding equipment. It wouldn't have fit through the gate I left open.
I will 100% use this company again because of the reasonable cost and excellent workmanship. . I suggest to anyone that will use this company to take steps to compensate for the front office.
I also asked if they would go up on my roof and cut down a hanging satellite dish and they did it. My oak tree has never been trimmed so well. Overall, I extremely satisfied with the service that was completed and will definitely be using Jones Rd. Tree Service next time I need my trees trimmed. It was definitely a good deal for everything they did!
The owner gave a price for both cutting down the tree and grinding the stump, but the written quote excluded the grinding. The owner honored his price and included the grinding when I asked about it.
The owner scheduled one day for the tree cutting, but his office manager called to correct the date.
Owner was suppose to call to set date on stump grinding, but grinder just showed up so I had to run home to put dogs inside.
The folks who cut the tree put the logs (I asked them to save the logs for fire wood) right on top of the stump to be grounded.
Overall, the company performed as described by other Angie's List reviewers said. They did the work for a good price, but not a very well organized company.
"[member name removed] , We do thank you for letting Jones Road Tree Service Serve You . Wo do appreciate your comments on how we can improve communication on the Job process . We are glad your an overall happy client . Thanks again Jones Road Tree Service"
Update 12/2/13:
The amount to replace sections of the new patio damaged by Jones Road Tree Service was greater than the amount owed to Jones Road Tree Service for the tree trimming by approximately $185. The solution communicated to Jones Road Tree Service was that I would pay the contractor replacing the damaged sections of the brand new patio, to ensure payment to the contractor who did not want to be in the middle of the dispute, and deduct the amount owed to Jones Road Tree Service. In this case I would be owed money by Jones Road Tree Service given the amount of replacement was greater than amount owed by $185. I believe this to be a reasonable, fair and equitable solution for all parties involved.
After previously being told not to text, I communicated this solution via e-mail in mid November. Subsequently, I received 7 texts and 1 e-mail trying to revisit an "expert" cleaning service which was an unacceptable solution for reasons described above in this complaint. I again communicated to Jones Road Tree Service via e-mail the solution outlined and indicated I did not wish to discuss the matter any further. Jones Road Tree Service proceeded to call the contractor replacing the patio directly and told the contractor to send the bill for replacement to them directly. Subsequently, I was sent an e-mail and ultimately told the only acceptable solution to Jones Road Tree Service was to be billed by the contractor and we pay our bill to Jones Road Tree Service which would ensure all matters were "resolved" with Jones Road Tree Service. I again indicated via e-mail the only acceptable solution for us was already communicated and the contractor replacing the patio did not want to be placed in the middle of the dispute. Subsequently, I have received approximately 3-4 e-mails indicating the bill should go to them and a phone call that we need to make arrangements to pay for the tree trimming. The last e-mail indicated "We should take this matter seriously". I have found this entire experience and behavior exhibited by Jones Road Tree Service unacceptable, unprofessional, and at times, harassing and threatening. I would certainly hope no other members would be subjected to this type of behavior by a vendor that advertises on Angie's List.
"To [Member Name Removed] Jones Road Tree Service Is very sorry about the Oil on the Paverstone Patio . Chainsaws commonly Use a Lubricant to protect the Chain and this is what dripped on the Paverstone Patio . Secondly -You contacted David Mauk late Friday evening and you were Told a Service Rep from Jones Road Tree Service would be there on Sat morning to make a attempt to clean the Pavers . He was there as Promised to Power washed the pavers and unfortunately the Power washing did not work . Thridly - We did meet with you and the Contractor to visit the damaged area and have have agreed to pay the contarctor for his service . In ending this Incident could have been Totaly Prevented if the Trees were pruned before the new pavers were installed .2nd - It is best to communicate to a Business during Business Hours and phone Call and or e - mail .In This case Angies List Client did not do this . He tried to communicate by Tex Mesage and Not on Bussiness hours . 3rd - In Our Opinion we have acted proffesionaly every step of the way trying to reslove this problem and have Cocluded that [Member Name Removed] has a Personal Problem with The Sales Rep of Jones Road Tree Service . Thanks David Mauk"
We received a confirming call the night before the work was scheduled.
The crew that arrived was efficient and business like. We were impressed by their expertise and teamwork. They removed the large tree in close quarters without touching the house. All branches and trunk were hauled away and the work site was cleaned up.
The job could not have been better done.
All in all we were satisfied with the job.
My neighbor and I arranged to have Jones Rd. Tree Service come on March 15th to remove two large pine trees on my yard and one large pine tree and several tallow trees on her yard. The estimate for removing my two pine trees, including grinding the stumps, was very reasonable and we were both looking forward to having the work done. The workers were expected to arrive sometime in the morning, but did not. When I called to check, the owner told me they had delays due to a tree falling on a house as well as a worker who had something to take care of first. He expected them to come by 1pm but they did not arrive until 2 pm. They started on the neighbor's yard and quickly removed her tallow trees, then started on her very large pine tree. As the afternoon progressed, it became clear that they weren't going to even get started on my yard. The workers were WONDERFUL - I watched them as they carefully cut down a very large pine tree in my neighbor's yard. They did not have enough time to grind the stumps in my neighbor's yard, though. They said they would come tomorrow to do my work, but I had previous commitments and told them that would not work. I called the office to reschedule for the next Friday, the 23rd. I was told the workers would arrive between 8 and 12, but by 1 pm they had not shown up. When I called the office, I was told that there was no way a crew could get there today, at which point I told them I was no longer interested. I did tell them that my neighbor would like to have her job finished, and was told that they "never grind these stumps the same day." This surprised me because I assumed they would be able to do it in one day, since other companies in the area had done so. If this is standard for this company, it would have been beneficial to know about this ahead of time. Now that I have cancelled my order, they have been calling me repeatedly and the owner just showed up at my door, which I find rather aggressive. I told him I was not interested. All this company had to do was keep me informed, but for whatever reason they have chosen not to. They seem to have scheduling/communication issues, and don't contact the customer.
"In response to the member's comments, first and foremost we apologize for any inconveniences and/or damages that occurred during the services we performed. We also deeply regret that our efforts to remedy each of the members' complaints were not acceptable. We would like to address each of their points as summarized below: 1) Regarding the crape myrtles, visual inspection prior to commencing the job revealed large knobs with new growth sprouts β telltale signs they had been βtopped offβ in the past by other tree trimmers. We explained to the client that when crape myrtles had been topped off previously, itβs very difficult to βthin them outβ in such a way that the trees no longer looked topped off. In other words, the current visual appearance of the trees is irreversible, and we did the best we could with the customerβs crape myrtles. 2) The back gate that was damaged was very narrow and we placed slats of wood on the inside of the gate sides in an effort to protect it as we hauled the tree trimmings through the gate. Unfortunately, it was not reasonable to completely cut down all of the trimmings to fit perfectly through the narrow gate and some damage occurred to the gate trim and finish. We apologized for the damage and offered to repair the gate, however, the member stated she preferred instead to take a price reduction on the job. We agreed on a settlement and it was our understanding that the issue was resolved. 3) The oil spillage was not related to the chainsaws. Rather, the stump grinder hose broke and spilled oil in the grass and on the driveway. We cleaned up the oil on the driveway and in the yard. 4) The cable line was entangled within the stump and it was impossible to fully remove the stump without damaging the cable. We apologize that this damage occurred as a result of the stump removal. 5) Our foreman did not demand the payment from the member. Rather, he simply handed the bill to the member as the crew was finishing. Per the terms of the contract, payment is not due until the stump removal is completed. In most cases, the stump removal crew arrives later in the day or the following day to complete the job. If the member misinterpreted being handed the bill and felt he was being forced to pay prior to the job completion, we sincerely apologize. Under no circumstances do we ever expect or accept payments prior to completion of the specified work. In the end, we regret that the member's job was not completed to their satisfaction but strongly feel that the major issues that occurred were in fact reconciled prior to the completion of the work and acceptance of payment. Further, we would have gladly addressed these concerns further with the memberβs had they simply presented their continued objections directly to us instead of posting their complaints indirectly through an online forum."
