I filed an AHS Warranty request to send someone out and I received Barker's information via eMail. I was ok with waiting until Monday morning since we did purchase a window unit to sustain us knowing that it may take a while before we may get the A/C fixed. Monday morning came and I pro-actively called the number on the eMail (7:45AM). This was before their business hours and I left a message on their VM. It had a message that it may take them up to 24 hours to respond to any calls and if applicable, AHS Warranty Service Request Number. This disturbed me since my family was baking in the heat of summer. I called AHS Warranty customer service and told them about the VM. I just wanted to make sure that AHS was aware of the situation since they are contracting this job (9:00AM). AHS made the necessary phone calls and called me back within 30 minutes and stated that Barker will call me and schedule a time prior to noon. I did receive a phone call from Barker and we were able to make arrangements for that afternoon. To make a long story short, everything went smoothly once we go the first appointment. I did have to make another phone call to Barker since the tech did not call my husband to give him the status of the part that needed to be ordered (the tech stated that he would). We were back on-line by Wednesday that week. I honestly believe that with AHS calling the business, that put Barker on their toes and communicate with the customers as they should.

Air conditioner broke down Tues June 30. I filed an online request for service with my warranty company AHS. I waited for the call on Wed but finally called Barker myself around noon. They said I was "on the list" to call. They could not come out until Friday July 3. I tried that morning to confirm the visit but could not get through to Barker's - went to answering machine. The techs did arrived promptly and did several things to diagnose the issue. They came up with a broken motor. By this time it was afternoon before the 4th of July holiday so they had to re-schedule to come back with the part because they had to pick it up. They re-scheduled for Monday, July 6. I tried to call Barker's that afternoon to confirm the plan after the techs left, but their answering machine said they closed early for the holiday. The techs did arrive promptly with the motor on Monday (though they did call for me to read them the serial/part number) and the AC got fixed. I had tried to call that morning to confirm but, again, got only the answering machine which was still incorrectly stating that it was Friday before the holiday. All in all, the techs were professional, thorough and appeared competent. The company seems a little difficult to communicate with... I was never confident that they had me on their "list" and when I had no AC and it was 100 degrees on a holiday weekend I needed to be sure there was no miscommunications.....
Response from BARKER AIR CONDITIONING & HEATING

"We regret that our customer had difficulty in reaching a friendly voice in a quick manner. We have an office staff of three and six phone lines. If we can't answer we do have a voice mail system for the customer’s convenience. We regret any confusion that may have been created by our forgetting to update the holiday message. Unfortunately we receive a great many work orders during the month of July - especially during a heat wave. It is our goal to contact each customer as quickly as possible even though the home warranty contract requires we contact the customer within 4 business hours. During a heat wave many customers tie up the phones calling numerous times to ensure they haven’t been forgotten. Regrettably this slows down the process of contacting other customers. We do have fully stocked trucks, but sometimes we do need to order specialty parts."

I got this company through American Home Shield which in principle do nothing else but repair broken things. the Barker technician was scheduled to arrived between 9-12 noon; he arrived at around 9:30am. He went went through the control systems and did some measuring. Assessed that everything was working 100%, therefore there was nothing for him to fix. For him the issue was the HOUSE itself; it was difficult to cool down (the cooling system was in the 3rd floor attic). I then asked what must I do to keep cool. He basically said it's not his job to tell me as he just fixes things!!! As I house owner, I didn't feel comfortable with his statement as I paid $60 for him to come in and fix my cooling problem. After some weeks, I bought a couple of fans from Sam's. By the way, we found out later when I tried in investigate the hissing sound in my daughter's bedroom that it was because it was only partially open (also solves the cooling issue), but this was not even looked at by the technician; he just said there's nothing to fix here!

"We regret that the home owner was not completely satisfied. When we provide services to home warranty customers we must abide by all contracts in place. The warranty company contract stipulates that the customer pay the service fee when a call is dispatched. We can only address the specific issue on the work order and can not deviate from the service work order. The home warranty companies do not cover home design flaws or duct design flaws. Often customers are not aware of the contract verbiage and become frustrated. We can however, provide a full preventative maintenance inspection service and make recommendations, however the warranty company does not cover this service."

I was not very happy with the service after the sale. The company kept trying to sell me a bigger system then I needed. It did not cool my whole house. I did not like the fact that I had hot & cold rooms; the rooms were not all one uniform temperature. I was not happy with their service. I will not use them again.
Response from BARKER AIR CONDITIONING & HEATING

"We regret the customer was not satisfied. Over the years technology changes. Newer equipment generally uses less BTU then the older equipment in the guise of energy efficiency. Some times we make recommendations to replace the older unit with a larger unit if the square footage of the home vs BTUs warrants it. The temperature differential in each room is relatively normal when you factor in heat load in each room is different. The number of windows, the size of window, tile flooring vs carpet, high ceilings vs low ceilings, one story vs two story and open concept floor plans all must be factored into the HVAC design. Often the temperatures and air flow differentials can be addressed by addressing the duct system. Some home owners are not comfortable with that explanation and may feel they are not getting accurate information. We hope the customer will give us another chance in the future."
