Repaired TV

He was there when he said he would be. He opened the set and checked out the problem. He had to order a part. The part came in in 3 days. He returned and installed the new part. It has worked beautifully since.

I called these people because they were listed as the Panasonic Authorized repair company and they were close to my house. I have a 54and quot; Panasonic Rear Projection TV - it's about 7 years old and had developed a convergence problem on Halloween night after it had been moved while it was running. I had replaced the convergence chips in the TV myself (I have lead-free de-soldering equipment at work and work with SMT electronics every day - I've about 50 years of experience with soldering board level components) but fitting two new STK392-119 chips this had not solved the problem so I called this company and asked if they serviced Panasonic RPTVs - the person I spoke to said that they serviced RPTV's regularly and handled many repairs each day. Joe Luu came out to my house and I explained what I'd done - he looked at the TV and removed the convergence and EHT board from the set and looked at it for a while - I showed him what I'd done but I'm not sure that he believed me. After a few minutes he said that he could replace the same convergence chips that I'd replaced at a cost of $350 and that normally he would guarantee his work but that since I'd worked on the TV he would not guarentee that he would be able to get the TV working again. I asked him if replacement boards were available and he went out to his truck, returning after a few minutes to tell me that the boards were no longer available. He charged me $98 and left. The Good News is that I ordered a new set of convergence IC's from the Internet, this time with six convergence resistors and replacing the chips AND the six 2.2ohm resistors did the trick - I now have a working TV after spending $98 on Joe and $60 on parts. I was willing to go out and buy a new TV but quite honestly the garish picture quality of the flat screen TV's does not suit my viewing habits - watching DVD movies, not cable or broadcast TV. I want a film quality picture which was why I bought a large RPTV in the first place. My impression is that these folks change boards and swap stuff out - they don't actually do any real repair work - Joe told me that it had been a while since he's seen any rear projection TV's (not what I was told when I called them initially).

Though the work required more labor than originally estimated, the $$ estimate did not change. I was impressed by courtesy, promptness, and professionalism. the only bad part was that i had to rent a tv for the LSU-Bama game- but that was not their fault!
