Allen Plumbing Co

About us

We are a small business with structure as if we were a large company. Scheduling is done on computer and we do strive to show up at the appointed time. Please call and check availability. We are normally scheduled at least 2-3 days out on non-emergency calls, however at some times during the year, we have same day availability! We focus on plumbing fixture replacements and offer in-home sales with warranties on labor that match the manufacturers warranty on the fixture. We also offer under-slab plumbing drain replacements, gas line installations and water service lines. Of course, repairs of any plumbing fixtures and piping are also a large part of our business.

They've put in a new faucet, and they also repaired some things in my bathroom. They also fixed my tub drain, as well.

Curtis came before Christmas to provide an estimate on several jobs that had been low-priority, but needed to get done. While at the house he identified the leaking drain line, which was a bit of a pressing issue (as the bathtub was draining into the ground). We were able to get the work scheduled several days in advance to align with my schedule. Curtis came on time and took care of all of the needed repairs himself. He was professional, personable, and clearly knew what he was doing, and didn't cut corners with materials or solutions. He took care to explain what we needed to know about the repairs. We are very pleased with the service and the work performed, and will definitely be calling Allen Plumbing again!

Mr. Allen scheduled the job, and then called again on the morning of the work day to confirm that time that he expected to arrive. It took him about an hour and a half to complete the work. The new kitchen faucet works perfectly and is a huge improvement over the old one, both functionally and appearance-wise. Mr. Allen was extremely professional -- answered all the questions that I had for him, and left my kitchen spotless. I was extremely pleased with his services and will try to use him for all of my plumbing needs in the future.

We have a 70 year old home in the Houston Heights and our bathroom sink was not draining. We tried to fix it ourselves, but ended up making matters worse. So, we called in the morning and scheduled our appointment. My husband and I are both professionals, so it is very important that our scheduled appointments run on time. We were very pleased that this company was so respectful of our time. Since he was running EARLY he called to ask if it was okay to come by our house about 45 minutes early. He arrived exactly when he told us he would and he made the necessary repairs in about 1.5 hours. He assessed what would need to be done and gave us an estimate, which was exactly what we paid at the end. Additionally, even though we had already made a mess of the bathroom he was very careful to prevent a further mess. All in all, everything was easy, quick, and completed with no surprise or delay. We were very pleased and we are already planning what we will have him fix when we call him out again.

I originally had Curtis out to do a few minor things so I could pass Bellaire inspection for my house. One of the minor things I wanted him to do was snake the drain in the guest tub. He thought there might be a leak so suggested I have it checked by an independent company so I could be confident he wasn't overselling me. He then went back and confirmed exactly where at no charge. He then proceeded to renew his license in Bellaire so that he was able to get the work done for me. They did a very good job at a reasonable price and I even tacked on the gas line split at the end. Very strongly recommended.

As it turned out, I discovered (after I had made the appointment) that we already had a gas line run to the utility room. Unfortunately, I neglected to call Mr. Allen back to cancel the appointment. He showed up right on time for his appointment at which time we told him we no longer needed his service. He had every right to be upset, but I appreciated the fact that he didn't try to charge me for the visit. He is very professional and he will be the first person I call the next time I need plumbing services.

I was surprised that pipes in the front of our home surrounding a water filtering system had rotted out, when they were replaced less than 20 years ago. Curtis Allen came right out and said that since we have a copper system, they should not have installed galvanized pipes for the hoses, etc, since that causes electrolysis to rot out the pipes faster. He quoted me a price to replace it all with copper, which included some digging, and of course soldering the copper. While he was at it, I had him remove the filtering system, which he advised me he "wouldn't have on his house." My long-term plumber had just recently installed a similar galvanized system at three times Curtis' cost on our back deck. curtis is a one-man show and his wife, Fran, handles the appointments. He was late showing up, but Fran called to alert me that he needed to stop for parts. Then it turned out he didn't pick up the insulation, so he had to go get some. Despite those delays and it taking much longer than he estimated, curtis charged me just what he had bid it at, which was lower than my previous plumber would have charged, I suspect. Furthermore, a very polite guy, he apologized for it taking so long. I was very pleased overall and will definitely use him again.

I live out of state and asked them to come repair a water heater at a rental unit I own. They wouldn't come to the unit because I wouldn't be there to pay them. I offered to pay by credit card or pay ahead of time (a deposit). I offered references of other services I have used and paid on time. They refused. How sad.
Response from Allen Plumbing Co

"We consider the plumbing in your home to be of great importance to your health, safety, and the value of your home; important enough that a homeowner should want to be there when work is being performed. Many times there are options available during the repair process that if I cannot present them to you, I'm not giving you good service. For instance, if you call me to repair a toilet of an expensive type or very old style, and it becomes less expensive to replace the entire fixture after we've seen the extent of the degradation, we would then give you the option of not paying for the quoted repair, but having us stop the attempt and put those funds toward the cost of a replacement toilet. If the homeowner is not there for me to demonstrate and discuss the problems, we cannot do the job with the greatest efficiency and effectiveness. So getting paid in person is only one aspect of why we like our clients to be home. Being there means you not only have your plumbing problems addressed, but, through our discussion in person, you will now have a greater understanding of the cause, prevention of future problems, and your options should future problems arise."

We called Allen Plumbing on a Monday morning. Fran informed us that Curtis would not be able to do the repairs until Wednesday. We agreed to wait. In the meantime, she called to say that Curtis' assistant was availabale on Tuesday, if we wanted to have the job done earlier. We agreed. He showed up as scheduled; replaced our old hot water heater; hauled off the old one; cleaned up everything.

Woke up to sewer back up in tub. Emailed very early, as it was too early to call for service (5 a.m.). Got a return call at 7:45 a.m. by Curtis' wife. They were booked and wouldn't be able to help us. But, she did offer a word of advice, you can't turn your water back on until you get it fixed. Not helpful if you can't come fix it. Got somebody else to come in 2.5 hours. Called a week later after tub faucet broke and water wouldn't turn off. Called during dinner hours, but Curtis helpfully advised how to turn off the water to the house. Again, was too busy this week to come by to fix it. Water in the house couldn't be turned back on until it was fixed, as there's no shut off valve to the tub faucet except to turn off all house's water. With a small child, you need water working in your house. In these emergency situations, you want someone to be responsive. We won't be calling again. Had previously used him for other items, and scheduling was always an issue, but job was done well. Had even written a great report on his prior work. Won't have to worry about scheduling ever again with him.
Response from Allen Plumbing Co

"We are sorry that sometimes we get too booked ahead to take care of emergencies. It's best to compare us to your family doctor. If you're in a car wreck, I'm sure you would not be able to call your doctor on a Saturday night and actually get him on the phone, much less have him meet you at the hospital on a moments notice. You'll get some young E.R. doctor who will do what he can, at a high price, to save your life. Then he would tell you to follow up with your family doctor for continuing care, because there you can get the care and attention you need. I'm a family plumber. I love it when I'm not booked up and can get to emergencies same day, but I know that being a professional means getting to people when you tell them you can get to them, however long of wait that will be. We don't ever tell anyone "sometime next week" or "next time I'm in the area", we schedule you them on the computer and strive to accurately estimate the time involved so we can get to the next one on time as well. This is Plumbing, not Pizza. Just because you get someone there is 30 minutes, doesn't mean they will have the skill and materials necessary to address all your plumbing needs."

He arrived right on time, got right to work, and did a great job. I provided my own faucets, and he gave me good information about choosing faucets in the future (if I change them again, I will buy them directly from him). He was very professional, and compared to other estimates I got for this work, his prices are good. Even my dog liked him!

Curtis Allen made three trips to our house, once to lay the line, once to start the gas test, fix the dryer vent and problem toilet, and finally to meet the inspector. Each time he was on-time or early. The job went exactly as he described. The only frustrating part of the experience had nothing to do with him. The inspector for the city did not arrive when we expected so Curtis wound up waiting a few hours for the inspector. Curtis is also wonderful and I highly recommend him to anyone who needs plumbing work completed on their house.

Before Mr. Allen arrived, I had hired the trench digging myself to keep the cost down, and followed the guidelines Mr. Allen's gave me. His part went off like clockwork, with Mr. Allen's idea working perfectly. He was prompt and professional in his service, and answered all my questions, giving maintenance advice as well. He does the work himself instead of hiring a less experienced plumber to do the jobs for him. That gives me confidence that his work will be good the next time, as well.

It went very well. I chose the company from Angie's List on the basis of reports and nearness of company. I was politely scheduled for a prompt service. The plumber arrived early even. He was very polite and friendly and competent and knowledgeable. He performed the work promptly and cleaned up afterward. The final amount was the same as the estimate except for a $10.40 fuel surcharge that he hadn't mentioned. I guess I was supposed to know about that. In any event it was no big deal. I definitely will call this company again and recommend them to any neighbors who have a problem.

I called Allen Plumbing to inquire about their replacing my garbage disposal. The woman who answered the phone did not know what the charge would be, so I asked her if Curtis (the owner) would call me. I got an estimate from Curtis (who was at a job site and he called me back promptly). I made a morning appt. (my request) for about 5 days later. Curtis showed up early, removed the old disposal, and installed the new disposal. It took about 30-45 minutes. He was neat and left the area tidy. Total charge was $123.58. The week before I had been told by another plumbing company that no one would do such work for under $400.
