After this last winter that was colder than usual, we decided it was time to get all of the windows in the house replaced. All of the windows were original to the house and some had broken seals, leading to the house not being energy efficient and a few windows that we could not see out of. We received three quotes, with two of those being from companies that I found on Angie?s List who had performed services in my general area within the recent past. All quotes were within a $9,000 to $12,000 range, depending on the type of window brand selected, features, etc.
We chose to hire Lanham to do the work. Their quote was in the middle of other bids we received, so they were neither the lowest nor the highest. Chuck Lanham, Jr., the president of the company, came to do the initial quote. He did a quick measurement of the windows inside the house, then showed the window that his company makes. While other companies offer different window brands, Lanham produces their own brand, which is made in the DFW area.
After reviewing all bids, we called Chuck to agree to a contract. He came back out on a Saturday to take final measurements outside, discuss the options such as color, grids, etc, and we signed the contract.
The install work started 4 weeks after we signed the contract and it took a total of four days. On three of the days, one installer did all the work. On one day, two installers were on site. They moved furniture and took down blinds, though I also moved some furniture items and blinds myself to help them out. The lead installer for my job had been with Lanham for many years and was professional, friendly, and courteous. I checked in from time to time to see how the work was going, as I had never had windows replaced in a home before. He showed me where some of the original windows had come loose from the frame or even loose from the house at points, so they were truly not efficient at all. He used different color caulk for inside the house and outside the house.
It has been two months since the windows were installed and we have noticed a reduction in the level of noise inside the house. More importantly, the house holds the inside temperature longer due to the more efficient windows. We look forward to lower air conditioning bills in the Texas summer. We have also received many compliments from our neighbors on how the new windows looks.
We choose to install vinyl windows. All five companies use welded, not screwed frames. All products were similar in many factors; differences included hardware, color choices, types of gas used between the window, sills, frame, outside profile, etc. Although all were Energy Star, some were higher rated beyond the minimum requirements. Outside factors included evaluating how each company would handled our alarm system, which would impact additional cost to use. Since 14 of our 42 windows are installed in the back of the house, which has vinyl siding, we also needed a company that could work with the siding and the costs involved in that. The windows have a siding ?wrap? which would need to be replaced if it cannot be replaced without damage. We also have an area of rot where sprinkler beds have damaged wood and we need to have that area fixed. We decided to remove an outside door, which necessitated a siding "fill-in." Warranties and available financing options were also considered.
In contacting the companies, we told them we expected a sales representative that was well-versed in their products (no trainees!) and who could suggest creative design options as well. In two cases, the company owner kept the appointment. Each appointment took between 2-3 hours. After we concluded all five appointments, we had learned a lot about the companies and window nuances, since our prior research had prepared us for questions! It might have been flattery, but two of the companies said they had never fielded such in-depth questions before, particularly on the specific glass products (Cardinal and Pittsburg Plate).
One company (Lanham) provided a bid at the conclusion of the appointment. Three companies responded within two days; the final company never provided a bid. It was also the same company that did not bring a sample of their windows! They prefer to schedule a second appointment after you have consulted with all the other companies. We found that off-putting, particularly since we could not evaluate their actual product.
After all the interviews, we firmed up what we actually wanted, which included converting five existing single-hung windows into picture windows, adding tempered glass in some critical areas, changing glass opacity in the bathrooms and ensuring every window met current code, even though our city does not require pulling a permit. We furnished our final specifications to each company to rebid. The final bids ranged from $16,000 to $40,000. We recognized the $40,000 product was slightly better, but knew we would never recoup that expense in the remaining time we expect to be in our home.
In the end, we chose Lanham. They were not the lowest bid but we had a lot of confidence in the company. We liked Chuck
Lanham?s attitude and philosophy. The are family owned and their installers are employees, not sub-contractors. Most of them have been with the company for many years. We like the caulking product they used and they addressed any brick problems that they encountered. The installation took five full days. They were careful with the emerging flower beds, moved all the furniture as needed and removed and replaced my window treatments with care. They were careful with cleanup, removed all the old windows and even ensured that one reusable window and the door we removed went to Habitat. Their care required almost no new siding replacement "wraps", except for areas with the newly-closed door and a couple of hail damaged areas. They matched the color well and replaced all the rotted wood. The additional siding cost was minimal. We told them we expected them to send their very best caulker; if we weren't happy with an area, they fixed it. We were picky and they completed everything to our satisfaction and more.
When we remodeled our kitchen in December 2013, our remodeling contractor had a new window installed to replace the kitchen garden window. It was not even a year old and was horrible! The installation was botched, it wasn?t caulked properly and the crew removed structural components getting it to fit. Initially, when we talked with the five window companies, we had approached this window as a repair, requesting caulking and a proper outside frame to repair the one the previous window contractor had installed.
After evaluating our whole house plan, we decided to replace the kitchen window as well, even though it was so new. When we contacted Chuck Lanham to adjust the bid, Chuck said, ?I?ve already included a new kitchen window in my bid for free. If you decide to choose me, I don?t want people coming to see your home and thinking that window represents my company.? That pretty much confirmed what our gut was telling us about Lanham Windows and Chuck Lanham, Jr.
I think all the companies we chose to interview are good; they wouldn?t have won the levels of awards on Angie?s List to rise above the pack if they weren?t. However, Lanham Windows product and level of service are exceptional! We liked the Lanham Window product, the installation, the employees and the integrity and level of professionalism this company displays. We totally love our new windows and are already recognizing a difference in our heating bill. We believe your experience with Lanham Windows will be equality enthusiastic!!
I highly recommend them for window replacement!

"Thank you for the kind words. Please allow me to introduce you, by name, to those you praised. Jackie is in charge of the installation schedule and calls all our customers, as a reminder, the day before we install. She is our current Employee of the Year. Your installer, Nick, was our Employee of the Year last year. All of our employees are equally impressive. Thanks again for the compliment and recognition."
"We have not provided a quote to this customer. Lanham Window Company vehicles are equipped with a vehicle tracking device. This device does not show our vehicles have ever stopped at this members address. I have explained this to Angie’s List, but they refuse to take it down stating they must leave it for legal reasons since their member has paid allowing them to post reviews. It does not matter that I can show I have never given a quote to this member. The work, and service, Lanham Window Company provides is reflected by the price we charge. We will never make an excuse for either. (We are competitive when compared to most brick and mortar/mom & pop stores) Most folks have commented (with A's) that we are not the cheapest, but we do a great job. Remember, my service is required to correct a cheaper product that has failed. There is no way you can offer the BEST service and BEST product and be the cheapest. A cheap price will, often times, compromise service and/or product."
Otherwise, the install was on time and the price was just above the avg pricing I got for the area. I had two other companies slated to come out (neither reviewed here) and neither of them showed up to measure at their designated times. Lanham did a fine job.
Be sure to mention the Angie's List coupon - they didn't offer it to me. I called back and they did honor it though.
Was impressed with Chuck when he came to talk to us and gave us the estimate. Very friendly and professional. We hired them based on that first impression and the Angie's List ratings. They weren't the cheapest, but we didn't feel they were overpriced. David was a great installer, really appreciated his attitude, professionalism and workmanship. We've not seen one piece of glass inside or out. He was very careful to not disturb our special finish in the living room when taking out the old windows. I wasn't sure if he could do it, but was pleasantly surprised.
There was an issue with the entry door after a delay in getting the door stained and ready for install as planned - when it arrived a few days late, the sidelight was on the wrong side so it had to be reordered. They took responsibility for the error and it was installed the next week. We were having terrible issues with our old door closing properly because of movement from the heat, but David was kind enough to reposition it for us so we could open and close it with ease while we waited on getting the new door. He was also nice enough to do a slight adjustment on our back door, which was already in place.
The communication wasn't always good with the office - one day David didn't show up and by late morning I had to call to find out if he was coming - someone in the office had forgotten to call me to let me know he wasn't going to come that day due to the door not being ready until the following week, so he wasn't going to come and finish up the trim work until the door was ready. Another time they failed to call me when David didn't show up because he had an emergency dental appointment. I only found out because I called them. Obviously emergencies happen all the time and I understand that, but it would have been nice to have gotten a call. Fortunately I work from home so it wasn't an inconvenience. There was also a slight communication gap with the door issue. I assumed the office knew about the door being wrong, but since no one followed up with me to let me know when to expect a resolution, I called Chuck later that day but he didn't know anything about it. Not sure who David spoke to about the door being wrong so I was surprised that Chuck seem surprised. Chuck quickly called me back to let me know what their plan was to resolve the problem and get the completed door installed. Again, I thought I would have gotten a call rather than me having to call to find out when to expect the door.
All in all, we were very satisfied with the installation of the windows and door - the windows are wonderful and the door came out beautifully. David was a pleasure to work with. Chuck followed up with me yesterday to make sure we were pleased with the windows. I would definitely recommend Lanham. Nothing ever goes perfect, at least not in my experience.
"I am pleased to receive the constructive criticism regarding the communication issues. It really helps our family to better improve. I have shared the comments with the office staff and installers. I feel confident that this has been corrected internally and we will be a better company because of this."
I am considering replacing my 1970s aluminum house windows in the next year. I plan to call Lanham for an estimate based on the service we received.
The last time they were out was for an estimate only. I decided to postpone the work needed due to finances.
I would give them an A rating across the board. They are always professional, helpful and do quality work.
I will definitely hire them again.
I would have given an A+ rating across the board if that was an option; they did a fantastic job.
