My project manager was out of town when the work was completed and I had some concerns about the work that was done. The work did not turn out as I had wanted or expected. When my project manager returned (just a few days), he came out to my house and reviewed the work and listened to my concerns. He scheduled a crew to come out to the house and complete the work that I requested. I was very satisfied with the end results and how the project turned out. This was the second time I have used Austin Drainage & Landscape. The first time was a number of years ago and I was very satisfied with what they did for me then as well. I would use them again if I ever needed their services.

I live in NW hills (much rock) and have a very steep uphill in my backyard bringing water to my house and a very steep downhill in my front yard taking water down the street to the sewers. Having read some mixed reviews, I called the company. They took a little long to come out and a little too long and unresponsive on the initial quote, but it was around the time of Harvey and I knew they were very busy. Neighbors up the hill from us overbuilt their lot and aimed some drainage toward our property which otherwise would possibly have gone elsewhere. Dale Jennings came out and walked the property and discussed our situation. After we received a quote, I had other questions and he came out again to explain. He did explain the jackhammer issue at $125/hour and we did hit rock a couple if times for a total of about 7 hours of rock drilling. Additionally, I did change the scope a couple of times AND added drilling up a heavily rebar filled patio and hauling away the pieces. The more I worked with Dale, the better I felt about his knowledge and honesty. Once the project started, it was flawlessly scheduled. Trucks, equipment, personnel, rock haulers and grass all showed up at exactly the right times to keep productivity going. The crews were respectful and honored our schedule and neighborhood disruption requirements, as well as they kept us informed when they saw a problem, change or need. Although Dale was not present for most of the work, he was aware of everything happening at all times and seemed to review the status at times on the property when we were unaware he had even been on-site. They finished this project on time and given the “scope creep” I added, they were on budget with the only variable being the solid rock unknowns. They were careful of existing shrubs, features and the placement of new drains. In all, ADLD put a swale around 50% of the house, added a number of drains, multiple 4” pipes to carry water to destinations. Additionally, they piped downspouts from the roof to destinations we previously agreed to. Finally, when they replaced the grass on the newly lowered swale areas with the drains, it looked great. My only regret is having to write this very positive report on Dale, the crews and ADLD without any gully washer rainstorms in the last month to what how it works. It rained a small amount and worked perfectly for that. I also have the assurances from Dale that if something doesn’t work in the big rain as expected, he will make certain it’s right. I believe he’s right and the system as built should now handle any water flow that happens. I am entirely satisfied and happy with the work and the guidance and project management that Dale provided. I would certainly recommend their work as it was performed at my house.

Installation went smoothly and orderly but, as with all jobs, there needs to be some final tweaking after completion. Here is where I'm left unsatisfied. The crew assigned to handle the tweaking left my job site quickly and gave me sloppy, unsatisfying work. No thought was given to repair correctly, but instead, speed and makeshift repairs were made. Austin drainage was also slow to answer the phone calls and assign the crew once the initial work was performed and paid for. Some repairs were performed by myself, but others will have to be paid for by me. Be careful if you hire them. Make sure you get everything repaired before they leave your house.
Response from Austin Drainage + Landscape Development

"At the time Mr. [Member Name Removed] s project was complete it was our standard practice to send the same crew (or a portion of it) back to a project, if tweaks were requested by a client. We did this because those crew members were most knowledgeable about the project/property, and so that our Team Members learned directly from client feedback. We feel that it is more impactful for our Team Members to make adjustments to the work they personally performed. Unfortunately, this often meant that clients had to wait for that crew to finish the project they were currently working on before we could return to the property to make the requested adjustments. While we still try to get original members of the crew to make tweaks when requested, we have made some changes to this practice that allows for faster response times. With regard to Mr. [Member Name Removed]'s comment specifically, our records indicate that his requested tweaks included a desire for additional gravel and the loss of a drain cover after a heavy rain event. These drain covers are designed to pop off during heavy rain events if the flow of water through the system exceeds that of which is allowed to flow through the drain grate, increasing the flow rate of the system. When this occurs it is not uncommon for the cover to be swept away to another portion of the yard, or down the street. In most cases you can simply recover the grate and replace it on the drain pipe after a storm. However, in Mr. [Member Name Removed]'s case it was lost. While replacement of this type of drain cover ($5 - $20 depending on size) is generally considered standard homeowners maintenance, and not a warranty issue, ADLD replaced the drain cover at no cost and secured it to the pipe to prevent future loss. Mr. [Member Name Removed] was unhappy with the solution. After some discussion ADLD also offered to provide Mr. [Member Name Removed] with additional gravel at no cost, but he refused the offer stating he had already paid someone to install it. Please note, the installed drainage system operates as intended and has resolved the drainage concerns ADLD was originally hired to address. We take pride in the fact that our company operates with integrity. We stand by our work, and do our best to remediate any questions or concerns expressed by our clients, especially after installation. We are truly saddened by the fact that we could not make Mr. [Member Name Removed] completely satisfied with some aspects of his finished project."

Response from Austin Drainage + Landscape Development

"We are truly sorry for the communication delays, and the inconvenience you experienced. We strive to provide excellent customer service, and your description of events does not meet the customer service goals we set for ourselves. While we in no way want to minimize your experience, we would like to explain that your appointment occurred during the largest business surge in our over 30 year history. In the year of 2015 Austin experienced 2 major flood events; May 23rd/24th, and October 30th. The May/Memorial Day floods caused at least 1000 people in the central Texas area to flee their homes while sections of I35 were submerged under water. Additionally, Lake Travis rose 2 ft in less than 12 hours and several parts of downtown Austin were flooded leaving thousands of people without power. Less than 6 months later another devastating flood occurred at the end of October in what may have been the most intense rainstorm ever recorded in Austin, as Mayor Lee Leffingwell declared a local state of disaster. These events created an unprecedented demand for our Drainage Services. Austin Drainage + Landscape Development cares deeply about the Austin community and recognized these were unusual and very scary moments for thousands of residents. As a result, we focused our resources to assist customers with drainage issues, especially those who experienced water penetration into their homes. It appears that as a result of the strain these events put on our staff, we did not communicate with you as well as we would have liked, and we offer our sincerest apologies."

We haven't gotten the quote back yet. He provided, really, very sort of, down to earth solutions for us instead of, like, recommending that everything be ripped out and made new. He had practical solutions that he had already thought of as we were walking the property. There was no cost for him to come out and give us the quote. I am not upset that he have not gotten the quote back but it would be nice. I do like that even while walking the property he was offering solutions other than ripping everything up and starting over. Ultimately we may decide to do that, but it is nice to have options. I like that he had free quotes. It took us a while to get the appointment, but they are busy because I think a lot of people in our area have drainage questions. At our appointment he was on time and communicative.

Plants were destroyed, grass was destroyed, not communicative that this would happen; waited for long period of time from bid and payment of 10% down for work to start and then work started without notice and interfered with other contractors who were scheduled to work causing them to have to return after this contractor was through.  just not a pleasant experience  Hope that the work they did fixed the problem!

I have been working with them for over a year and we're just working to keep solving the problem. They are great. It's just that when it rains is when you can tell if there's still a problem and sp we've been trying to deal with that. They are very professional. When they realized that they didn't solve the problem the first time they came back at no cost. They are a really good company. Their customer service is great. They stand behind their work and they are trying to solve the problem. I would recommend them to others.

Dale Jennings worked with us every step of the way to fix the problem.  We thought the bid to repair the damage was very expensive but we had to do it so we bit the bullet.  In the beginning we had no idea of the amount of work that needed to be done. As the work proceeded we were amazed at the amount of work these guys did for us!  Dirt removal, french drains, retaining walls and berms built , in short, they earned every penny of the price. We could not be happier.  We can actually relax and enjoy the rain now.
Expect to pay a non-refundable fee for the estimate which is applied to the total cost if you choose to go with them.
We got three other bids and they all demanded a fee for the estimate.
Austin Drainage  requires a 15% non-refundable deposit to get your project on their calendar once you agree to the job. They are VERY busy so expect a six month wait.  They don't try to tell you they can start "next week" but give you an honest estimate of the starting date - weather depending
If  these things tend to put you off consider you are dealing with a first-class professional company that everyone in Travis County wants. Very professional. They will exceed your expectations.

ADL was a pleasure to work with.  They spent time assessing the property and developing a strategy to fix the problem.  We were unsure if the proposal would solve the entire problem, so we did a temporary solution for a few months to make sure we were correcting the entire problem.
They were quite busy with recent floods in Austin, but we scheduled the work about 4 months out and they showed up on time.  There was a supervisor on site every morning first thing walking through the existing work.   We had prepared for quite a contingency because there were several unknowns on the property, but none of them were needed.  I would certainly work with them again.

I wanted a driveway installed and some grating done to divert some drainage and a sidewalk put in. First Scott came and spoke with me about the project and some different options (pavers vs concrete, etc.) The next week or so the designer came and spoke with me about the same things. I told him I wanted  2 ribbons of concrete, with river rocks in the center and pavers around the outside. My neighbor has this and he said he would drive to the next block and have a look. She payed $3000.  I sent them my property survey and a couple weeks later got an estimate. The estimate was for the entire driveway area to be made out of pavers. That wasn't what I wanted at all and the price was $11,000. I never got an actual drawing of my site and probably could have had them come give me a free estimate. I feel like I paid $99 for nothing.

The guy was fantastic.  He took the time to explain how to use the system more effectively - for both the garden and my wallet.  I will be using them from now on if and when I need to have the system serviced.

A detail of the project was discussed with me and options for how to correct the drainage problem were given.  Choices on the materials were provided and I was able to chose various grasses and rocks that fit my personal preferences.  They were available for assistance when I ask for additional information regarding choices.  It took the crew approximately one week to complete the project.  They did all of the digging and other work around the house by hand so not to disturb any existing lines or wires.  They had to take part of my privacy fence down in order to move the rocks and dirt from front to back.  Every night they would put the section of fence back up so that my dog could run in the back yard.  At the end of the project, they cleaned up the front and back area where they had been working and left everything looking great.  I am very happy with the job that they did and plan to use them in the future to expand my patio even more.  The only down side to the project was the wait time.  They are booked with various projects and it can take some time before they are able to get to yours.  The wait, however, is well worth it.
