During a particularly hot 100? day, my downstairs heat pump stopped cooling the house. A call in to Tom's got me on the calendar for a service call the next day. Doubtless the hot weather was causing problems for everyone, and keeping them very busy. So the next day, my friend Woody arrived to see what the problem was. The outside unit wouldn't turn on at all, and it didn't take long for him to find that the startup capacitor had blown, killed by years of heat no doubt. He had a replacement handy, and was able to replace it easily and had me going again in short order. Replacement parts for air conditioners sure are expensive, though. Sigh.

A lightning bolt struck near my house. Among other things, the air conditioner stopped working. I called Tom's late at night and left a message for a callback. The callback came early next morning, and they were able to schedule someone the same morning, which is very good response. Woody arrived and examined the state of things: An electronic thermostat which had gone blank, and the system would not run at all. I was not sure if the thermostat was blank due to being powered by the system, or some other reason. The thermostat did not use batteries, so I was unsure what to do. Woody went into the attic to check the system. He verified voltage levels were good, and he bypassed the thermostat controls and verified that the system would operate if the thermostat were working. So after he left, I went to buy a new thermostat and install it. When that was done, unfortunately would run, but it failed to cool the house, so I had to call Tom's again. Woody came back to double-check my work and found it was good, then he determined that the lightning strike had not only killed my thermostat, but it had also fried a control board in the compressor, causing the unit to operate in "heat only" mode. The board was not hard to replace, but the part would have to be ordered. In the meantime, Woody found a way to hot-wire the system to stay in "cool" mode so that I could be comfortable in my house until the part arrived, which was actually the next day. It seems that this was only the beginnings of the problems I would start having with my system, after that lightning strike, but this incident went quite well, I'm happy to report. P.S. Woody was kind enough to give me my Angie's List discount, despite the fact that my printer was unable to print the coupon (it had been killed by the lightning strike too, among many other things).
Description of Work: The initial service call found a damaged thermostat was preventing my unit from activating, but after I replaced the thermostat, the outside compressor unit still failed to start. The technician found a control board had been damaged, and needed replacing. He was able to hot-wire the (heat pump) system to run over the weekend while waiting for the part, so I was able to have a cool house in the meantime. After replacing the control board, all was well (until the next problem).

Called Toms mechanical at 830 in the morning offered to be there btween 1100 and 100 pm, Told them I would be home at 200 pm and they said would schedule for after @00. When I got home the tecnician was ther waiting for me. Quickly got to work and diagnosed the problem as electrical and that I needed an electrician. Only charge me for service call even though he checked my whole system. Would definitedly use again

The first service call went well and there was not a question that Woody would not answer. I'm a bit of a geek and like to understand how things work. He had the tools that one needs to do the job correctly. No other repair person we have had,we have had many till now, ever came so prepared. When I came home the system was not working very well so called and they said they would come out that day to fix. THEY DID! Its and older system was afraid that he would like others just say get a new one..he didn't and made the system work. What a breath of fresh air to have a company that is so good at customers desires and questions. Found them on Angie's and would recommend to anyone!
Description of Work: We were having difficulty getting system to cool. Running all the time and just luke warm. Woody came and did a very detailed check and bled off excess freon that others had done. Fine tuning the system seemed the way to go.

Overall the experience went well. I got bids from three contractors and Tom's bid was about the same as the lowest bidder. I used Tom's because they had a competitive bid and Brian Lackey's knowledge and professionalism. Three workmen arrived about 9:00 a.m. and two more joined them just after noon. The job was completed about 5:00 p.m. Carl and his crew seemed to be knowledgeable and were very professional. I did have to call Brian the day after installation because the air return was whistling in the bedroom and the workmen failed to wrap all of the old ductwork that needed more insulation. Brian came out the day I called and promptly corrected both issues.
Description of Work: Tom's installed a completely new HVAC system. They removed the old compressor and air handler and installed a new 5 ton Trane heat pump system. They also replaced some of the old metal duct work and wrapped and checked the old duct work that was left. Also installed a new duct and vent to game room.

The representative arrived as scheduled, spent some time looking over the system, and wrote up multiple estimates on the spot. He was unable to get us the best deal, but he made a reasonable effort to give us options.
Description of Work: Requested company provide estimate for repair or replacement of a central air conditioning unit. Company sent representative that quoted Trane equipment meeting the federal tax credits for efficiency. The price was significantly higher than other bids received, so another contractor was selected. We continue to maintain a biannual service contract with Tom's Mechanical to maintain our systems.

We looked at way too many HVAC companies before finding Angie's List. Tom's was one of several excellent Angie's List companies that bid on our project. They were neither the most nor the least expensive. They did the two projects on two different days. The teams were very pleasant and professional. We had some problems with the smaller unit and they came out immediately on three different occasions. One of the problems was caused by our electrical system, which had a circuit breaker that couldn't handle the power draw of the heat pump. The second problem was low freon caused by their attempts to diagnose the circuit breaker problem. I caused the third problems because I programmed the thermostat incorrectly. They sorted all these issues out immediately with the exception of the circuit breaker which we had to hire an electrician to fix [for less than $50]. I was very satisfied with their professionalism and promptness in dealing with our problems.
Description of Work: Tom's Mechanical installed 2 HVAC units in our house, a high-efficiency 2-ton unit in the main part of the house and a 1/2 ton heat pump in a part of the house that added years ago. They were replacing 20 year-old systems that were about to go out. They also cut a second main air return for the main system and added a new vent in the bathroom. They also replaced much of our duct work.

Tom's sent Justin and Carl who were both were curtious, knowledgable and very good about cleaning everything befoe they left. They impressed us in the way they conducted themselves. I originally spoke with Rich on the phone, and he got me to Brian Lackey. Brian came to my house to look at the situation and provided an estimate to replace the condenser. Both were professional and friendly and gave me confidence the work would be done well if hired. Although the price was pretty good, I was able to get a better deal through a friend of a friend. I did call Rich to tell him if it wasn't for the money I would have used them, and I would in fact not hesitate to use them in the future. Although he was disappointed to not get the job, he was understanding of my financial situation and my sensitivity to price and remained professional and friendly. I would not hesitate to use this company.

I called them on a Monday and they came out the same day that I called them. They came out a few hours after I called them. They were very professional. They told us everything that we needed and explained that they would need to order the part. By Friday they came out and installed everything very quickly. I was very pleased with their services.

It was very impressive and the only thing I was not too keen on was the price, but I think they were very competitive with everyone else. Our air-conditioner went out in the evening and they were very responsive and came the next day, but they did offer to come that evening. The technician showed up when he said he would and he was tremendous. He was helpful and did a full check and also checked our compressor and some other things. He got the part and fixed it and fixed it and we have had no issues at all. The staff on the phone was very friendly and I feel good about recommending them. They are not a bargain, but you get what you paid for along with good service.

We called for their "24-hour emergency service" at 8:00pm, but the technician would not come out. The technician told us that they would call us between 8:00am-9:00am to setup a time. We had to call them at 8:45 and were told that the technician did not setup the call back. Another technician came out and told us the capacitor was blown and needed to be replaced. Did not charge any labor (other than the service call fee), but charged $200+ for the capacitor, a $30 part. Very disappointed.

Our technician should have run the after hours call and we believe that problem will not occur again in the future. The charges were within the norm for our area and for the work performed. Placed a call at 8:10 am and someone was at my door by 9:00. Everyone I spoke to on the phone was very pleasant. After arriving and introducing himself, he immediately went to work to diagnose the problem. He was very professional and made sure he kept everything clean. Covers were worn on his shoes after he went to the backyard to check on the outside unit. After 1 hr. 15 min. everything was completed and running smoothly. He made sure to retape the furnace door which had been done previously to avoid air loss from the furnace. Was very pleased with the service I received.
Description of Work: Air conditioning was not working. Replaced transformer which had blown from a shorted contactor. Contactor also replaced and a low voltage fuse was added. Washed condensor and checked operation.

Between Mr. Lackey and Perry, the workman, everything was great. If it wasn't for their hard work, none of this would have ever gotten accomplished. We have been using them since 1989 when they installed two units in our old place. They are timely and professional. All questions I ask are answered quickly. Their pricing is also very reasonable.

Overall, it was positive experience and I would use them again, especially since their service plan appears to be less costly than many of the other local heating and cooling companies that I initially called.
Description of Work: Contracted a service plan that includes regular maintenance in Spring (A/C) and Fall (furnace) for $180.00. Also paid for additional 7 lbs of freon that were needed in our 2 HVAC units. A/C check and adding of freon took approximately 90 minutes.

They put in the new system, replacing the wiring, plumbing, gas lines, and refrigeration lines and adding additional ductwork. I had a service contract that came with the manufacturers guarantee; when that ran I continued to use them buying a yearly contract. They do a good job.

Brian Lackey, the estimator, came on time and explained all of our options. He returned with a good price and made sure I got the Trane rebates and tax credit certificates. The install was done over two seperate days as the job was pretty big. They arrived on time, worked hard all day and cleaned up after themselves. They hauled off the old equipment and explained the equipment operations.
Description of Work: Completely replaced a 10 year old 4 ton and 2 ton system with new Trane high efficiency heat pumps and air handlers with communicating thermostats. They also added two return air vents in two rooms that have never been completely comfortable in the summer. The techs were very thorough and professional.

They were polite. We dealt with humans, not an automated system which is always good. And we were able to contact them on a weekend and they came out.
Description of Work: They came out and looked at my AC and they replaced it. They also removed my old AC and disposed of it. . I think we would have paid that much anywhere we went. So one thing we didn t like was the price and having to pay for a new air conditioning. I was very happy with the service, the customer service and the professionalism of the company. They cleaned up after themselves.
