We purchased a gas fireplace for our house and wanted to have a licensed professional perform the connection and install a gas tank. The installer came out on March 10 and gave us an estimate of $580 with a planned date of installation of March 17 at 10:30. When he did not show up by 11:15, I called his cell phone. He said he was glad I had called because he lost our address and did not have our phone number. (This should have been my first clue, since he was at my house just one week earlier.) He showed up fifteen minutes later. The first problem was his initial insistence to drill through my hard wood floor to run the gas line, which I had expressly told him that we would be going through the the wall and then go through the sub floor in the wall. He drilled the hole in the wall and discovered that he did not have a drill bit long enough to drill through the sub floor. So now I have to get my out my tools and I am now becoming his assistant to the installation. We use my drill bits to make the holes through the sub floor. He then asks me if he can use a piece of wire he found in my crawl space to run the hose up through the floor and wall as a snake. So I go get my own snake wire tool and use it to help him run the hose line. He then realizes after running the line that he does not have all the proper connections and tells me he has to go to the office to get some parts. He leaves and is gone for almost four hours. When he gets back he makes the connections to the fireplace and then runs the line under the house. He is so unorganized that my 21 year old daughter asks me (in private) "Does he know what he is doing?") When finished with the line, he realized he had to get another connection to the tank and leaves again for an hour. When the installation was complete I discovered that while connecting the line to our firebox he damaged the lower fireplace wood mantel by scraping it multiple times. I made my dissatisfaction to him aware and he did give me a $50 discount on the install. He did not take my critique of his work ethic very well. What should have taken 3 hours total lasted all day long. I may use them in the future when I want them to swap my tank out, but for installation, I could have done it better myself.
