Initially they tried to charge me $2600 for the work at $90 an hour shop labor plus parts. I negotiated it down to $2000 which to says they are way over charging in the first place.  However the quality of the work was very good and they got it done quick.

Transmission was rebuilt and drives well.  No more leaking transmission fluid on the drive way.  Good job and very fast service.  I used the Holt Transmission Service location at 1125 North Main Street, Summerville, SC 29483.  Phone 843-261-0300.

Have had to return vehicle to Holt's two times for leaks but each time the issue was dealt with quickly at no charge.  Other than the inconvenience of returning the vehicle it has been a good experience especially considering the mileage on the car when the transmission was overhauled. 

This review is written for the Holt Transmission location on Sam Rittenberg Blvd in Charleston, SC. I took my wife's car in for a routine service recommended in the owner's manual (i.e. change fluid, filter, and adjust bands). Upon completion of the work I picked up the car and noticed that the transmission was shifting abnormally. We had never had any issues with the transmission before this and quot;serviceand quot;. I returned to Holt Transmission and described the problem to the manager. He immediately said that it was a and quot;coincidenceand quot;. He did, however, take the car for a road test with one of his technicians. Upon return from the road test he said the transmission did have a shifting problem but that he would make an and quot;adjustmentand quot; that and quot;mightand quot; help it. The adjustment was made but the manager told me that the condition still existed and that the transmission may last a year...or maybe not. That was the extent of the remedy offered to me. So I am VERY, VERY dissatified. We had a car with no transmission issues prior to taking it to Holt Transmission. Now we have a car with a defective, and I fear, unreliable transmission. Since Holt Transmission is unwilling to fix whatever is wrong with my transmission, I am stuck with finding someone to repair it at a likely cost of thousands of dollars. I have contemplated filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. This is just a bad situation for everyone....Holt Transmission and me.

I had my service done at the 1125 N Main St, Summerville, SC facility. I am coming uo in the one year anniversary of the service and the van is running great. Will be taking it in for the one year complimentary check up shortly. Very professional staff. Prices are competitive if not a bit on the high side but I believe the quality of the service and the timeliness of the completion of the work made for an overall good value.

The service was completed, but the communication with the shop was poor at first. We felt like we were being put off. Two weeks after the job was complete we had a new issue with the vehicle not related to the transmission and Holt fixed the issue on their own dime. They went out of their way to fix our experience and I appreciate the effort they put into making things right with us.

Although communication was not top notch, they did have a lot of cars on their plate, it looked like they had 30+ cars in the lot to work on. Maybe they could hire some additional help and it would streamline their process.

We were pleased with the work and the willingness of the folks at the location to make certain that the work was done right and the transmission was fixed. That proved to take some time because of an issue at low speeds that came up. At first, they were uncertain how to fix the issue, but clearly assumed that it was their issue and that they would find the right solution at no additional cost to us. And they did. The transmission works as well as it did when the van was new. The other work was done well too.

The manager at the Summerville location was extraordinary. He showed me the results of his diagnosis, test drive, and the computer update that was being requested for regarding my particular vehicle's make, model and transmission. Ultimately, this computer update proved to be the solution at the dealership, covered completely by warranty. I can't say enough about this business's integrity. Had the manager been unscrupulous he could have hung me out to dry with a huge repair bill but instead, he accurately and honestly steered me toward the cost-free solution. Amazing in this day and age!

No Problems - after a year, it is still running quietly.

Transmission was hard to go into gears at time. Holts, looked at it and saw nothing wrong called me and said they could adjust the cable to see if that helped. It worked for awhile then started back moving into gear hard. Holt's then said they can drop the transmission. They called and said transmisson was good but clutch parts were gouged ( they did keep all parts and showed me) they replaced parts that were bad and gouged in the clutch. The parts needed replaced but that did not fif the shifiting. Let me say they could not replace the fork because there are no more after market forks for a 1995 Saturn. They let me know that up front. So the only thing was tp replace the transmission with a used one. I told them go ahead. It works with me knowing that the fork is gouged. Holts called before anything was done, showed me what they did, nothing was hid and they said what thet could and cannot do.

The initial rebuild was in Aug, 2010. Holt Transmission and I had a rough start, but I must say that they ultimately proved their committment to customer service. There were a few extraneous expenses (related to the rebuild) which I incurred during the time in which they were trying to get my transmission repaired. They reimbursed me for these and even gave me a new warranty after the second rebuild. I understand this is not standard procedure but was their show of good faith towards customer service and towards the confidence Mr Holt has in his technicians. I would advise anyone who does business with this company to contact Mr Holt himself if you experience any difficulties with the service. He is approachable and very dedicated to his customers.

Overall I am very satisfied with Holt Transmission. They were courteous on the phone, answered all my questions, and even towed my car from the dealership for free. I was given an estimate on the repairs within 6 hours and the transmission was fixed when promised. They were great to work with.

I had visited other transmission shops in the area. I was quoted $2500 from other transmission repair shops without them even really looking at the transmission or problem associated. I called Holt transmission (North Charleston location) and they said they would be glad to open it up and see what the problem is (which will cost you for that service regardless of whether you use their service or not). They ended up at the same conclusion as the other shops but were able to do it for more than $600 cheaper. They always contacted me when they said they would and the work was done when they said it would be. They were all courteous. A couple of notes of caution. Don’t judge the book by the cover. The shop is apparently there to fix cars and not entertain you in creature comforts or impress you in any way. Also, when you walk in you may need to wait for a second if the manager is on the phone. The wait is worth it as they will give you the service and attention you need when they commit to work on your car. They respond well to phone calls. They also offer of 2 year or 24,000 mile warranty on transmission work. It has been about a month since the work was done and all is well. They have two locations, N.Charleston and Summerville, my experience was with the N. Charleston location.
