"I'm not sure if you recall but we did meet with you in May. We did a walk thru of the property but because you were waiting on another board member you were unable to confirm with us on what exactly needed to be done. We left it that once you confirmed with the member you would reschedule with us and until now we had not heard from you. If you would like to meet again I'd be more then happy to have Steve meet with you. Please advise. Thank You."
Overall a positive experience and I can recommend J.C. highly for the consultation about fence design, their professionalism, and the quality of the the finished fence.
YESTERDAY I received a call that they would be onsite today. There was no warning or question as to whether this date would work or not for me or my tenant. I am supposed to give 24 hrs notice as a landlord and this fence abuts my neighbors property and they have a dog that will no longer have a fenced in backyard while this gets fixed.
Today they did show up promptly at 8am however which was good. They have changed their game plan due to the dog which was nice. They are now installing the poles just inside the existing fence so they can set and then they will take down the old fence when they are ready to install the new.
The only curve ball that is not a huge deal, it would have just been nice to know, is that they will be back NEXT WEEK to finish the project. I am not sure what is going to take them so long since most of my fences get installed in 2 days but as long as the fence between the properties remains standing, I guess it is ok.....not that they have communicated which day they will be back.
In fact, when the owner of the company came out for the initial visit to price the job he came up with a solution that was not thought of by the other fence companies we had contacted. That made a big differance in the appearance of the fence. This company also fabricates their own fence and because of this we were able to get a 6ft fence that graduated to a 4ft fence all in one piece. I was very pleased with this because I had pictured two seperate pieces of fence.
The men who came out to install the steel posts came at exactly the time they had indicated and completed the work in about 4 hours . I was also impressed that the owner who initally came out to price the job also came out that morning to assure us that the overgrowth that we had explained over the phone to him would not be a problem. This made us feel much better because we had cleaned the area a few weeks before and taken out about 12 brown bags of leaves, dead limbs that had fallen out of tress and bamboo that needed cutting in order to put up the fence. All went well that day with digging the holes, filling with cement and putting in the steel posts.
A week later (after the posts had dried in the cement) the men came to actually put up the fence. They were great and the very helpful in determing how the fence should be placed as the ground was not level. They were excellant and the fence was up in about 2-3 hours.
I thought the new picket fence would go up within one or two business days of removing the old fence. however, this was not stipulated in the contract. In any case the new fence went up 7 total days after removing the old fence or 5 business days.
The time frame was not in the contract and it is quite possible that the timing was a miss understanding on my part. When I called to convey my concerns about the delay in putting up the new fence the response to my call was excellent. The new fences were installed within 48 hours of my call.
following:
44-long x 5'-high and quot;Victorian square picketand quot; fence, with one 5' gate.
Wood posts 6and quot; square with and quot;New England Capsand quot;
23'-long x 6'-high and quot;Privacy boardand quot; fence (not spaced) with a cap.
Round metal fence posts.
Overall experience: They were nice people, they put a decent fence and I would do business with them again, but it was trying at times.
Here is the good -
The fence is solidly built, looks good, and I think the price was pretty fair.
Here is the bad –
The schedule: We put a deposit down the last week of October, and were told they would be out to do the install the week after Thanks Giving. Unfortunately the actual install didn't start until December 13th, three weeks later. I say and quot;startedand quot;, because all the crew did was show up and install the posts. As they were packing up to leave, I was told by the onsite installers
that and quot;someone else would be back later to put the panels upand quot;. When I asked and quot;later today?and quot; they said, “maybe next week, because they don't make the panels until we set the posts”. This was a surprise but I figured I could deal with another week.
Unfortunately they didn't show up the next week, or the week after. In fact they finally showed up a month later, on January 10th. So bottom line – I was told it would be about 4 weeks from quote to installation, but it actually ended up taking 9 weeks.
The installation: The first crew that did the post installation (Dec 13th) seemed confused as to where the posts were supposed to go. One installer thought they went in the front of the driveway the other thought they went at the end. We resolved it with a two-second discussion but it concerned me that there was confusion and I was glad I took the day off to be there.
The second crew that showed up (Jan 10th) put the first panel of the and quot;privacy fenceand quot; facing the and quot;wrong
wayand quot;. I caught it before they moved on and they fixed it without issue, but again, it was a bit of a surprise and I was pretty happy to have been home.
Next up was the Victorian fence. The installation was going well but I happened to notice two posts that were 4and quot; and not 6and quot; like the rest of the fence (these smaller posts were not installed by the first team as they were going to be secured to concrete). When I asked about them, I was told that that they needed to use smaller posts because I had specified a metal post mount, which wasn't available for a 6and quot; post. The first part of that is true, I did specify the mounting hardware, but the second statement is not - just Google and quot;Simpson Strong Tie ABA66Z Z-Maxand quot;. I explained my concern about how the fence would look and there was a little more resistance this time, as the foreman insisted the proper post mount wasn't available. We went back and forth for a minute
until I said smaller posts were a show-stopper. We ultimately agreed that they would get the correct size posts and try to use the mounting they had (I'll be getting the proper mounts and doing the refit myself).
To be clear - the conversation was never heated and it was resolved professionally, but I was a little on edge imagining if I had not taken the day off and then come home to find the privacy fence mounted “backwards” and two smaller fence posts installed.
Bottom line is this: they are family-owned company and probably a little more laid back than I'm used to dealing with, but in the end everything was resolved exactly as I wanted without issue out - so no big deal. I would recommend them but be prepared to wait and also make sure you’re around during the installations so everything goes as planned.
- Initially, we had scheduled the installation for August 8th but it did not happen until the 9th. The crew got the fence installed in one day but could not install the gates until the cement cured on the posts. When my wife and I returned home that day, we were pleased with most of the work done.
- The only exceptions were: the space for the gate on the right side of the house was not where we had specified and one post on that side was not secured by cement but with screws. It was the post up against the last rail post for our front stairs. I immediately called the office but as it was after 6:00pm, I only got the answering machine. I left a message for Steve Mare, the representative from whom we had ordered the fence and explained what our concerns were over those two issues. I received a call back the next moring from Steve and he assured me both problems would be fixed when they returned to install the gates.
- True to his word, when they returned the next week to install the gates, both problems were resolved to our satisfaction. They moved the gate to the location we wanted and secured the last post with cement and removed the screws. We now have an attractive privacy fence and our neighbors will speak to us again.
"I'm alittle confused to the comment. JC Fence does have a website and an email address and we clearly state on our quotes that the customer is required to file for all licenses and permits. I'm sorry if there was any confusion at the time of your consultation."
