Kitchen and Bath Remodeling
Calyx did both a kitchen and bath remodel at my house a couple months ago and we were thrilled with the results! It was a very professional experience with full transparency. Being someone with not much construction experience they really explained everything in depth with me and walked me through the process. I was very descriptive in what i was looking for and they more then delivered. For any future projects I will be reaching out to Calyx again!

Awful experience. Hired Bob to renovate a 3/4 story of a cape house into a full second story. I was told they do this sort of scope "10x per year". What ensued was a small crew of misfits showing up at my house and hacking together framing and roofing that neither met manufacturer or industry standards, nor passed inspection. Additionally, despite multiple assurances that my first floor would be kept dry and in tact during the renovation, there was substantial water damage to my first floor after one minor rainfall because the crew left my ceiling exposed overnight. And the next day they told me nothing hoping I wouldn't find out. So now I have to renovate the first floor due to mold, and my house is uninhabitable. I was told they would take care of everything and they did nothing. Every other word out of the crew's mouth was f this and f that, they all smoked and upon several site visits I smelled marijuana. Absolutely embarrassing for my neighborhood. To add insult to injury, after multiple complaints regarding lack of project management and poor workmanship, all I received was a bill for work that now has to be corrected in order to pass inspection and meet the design of my construction documents. Bob Brierly is a fraud. He sells the project well, then handed it off to the cheapest subs he could find and walks away. So instead of moving back into my house this week as agreed to in the contract, me and my two children have to find alternative housing while I wait for professionals to remediate the damage Calyx caused. Beware, these guys have no conscience and I highly recommend running a background check before you hire Bob Brierly.

"Calyx has successfully completed 1000’s of projects over 23 years. This review is about a job that was not. However, this review is exaggerated in many, almost all, ways. We were hired as a framer to frame a 2nd floor on an old house and tie in the roof to an addition that is still not done. When building this you “raise the roof” and remove the roof and walls. We put 7 of our carpenters on this project. After demo, we covered the house with tarps. This is normal construction practice for this type of project. Weather is not something that we can control. The services that we monitor said that the weather looked good. But one day during the week we had a random wind driven downpour. A limited amount of water from the rain penetrated the house. We then completed the roofing and sheathing, leaving the house weathertight. There was some water staining and given the wind driven rain, it is not surprising. On one of the last days that we were working at the house, we were informed that an existing sliding glass door on the first floor was not working properly. It turns out that the existing support header over this door had failed due to water damage from a long-time water leak. We had the Building Inspector check the house after the roof was completed. The inspection report that we received that day only referenced the client’s changes that were made after the contract was signed. All of our Workers, Owners and Project Managers are required to pass drug testing and background checks. We do not appreciate false accusations or having our people called “misfits”. Just because we cannot all be wealthy and privileged, does not give anybody the right to disrespect our people. They are “hands on” guys, who work long and hard. We setup a delivery with the supplier and requested a progress payment. The client cancelled the delivery and did not pay us. As an Owner/GC, he said he be in phase 1 by July 1st. We hope that all goes well with this client. We do not wish him ill, but we do have to get paid for our work."

"We apologize for what could have been a better experience. The leaky shower was derived by a new product selected by the client. We had never installed this type of product before as it was brand new to the market. We installed it per manufacturer's specs, however a leak presented itself about 2 months after we closed the job. The client reached out to us right before the COVID pandemic placed everyone on quarantine, so we had to close for some time while everything was being sorted out. Once it was safe to resume work, we sent out a crew to remediate the issue with the system. We also had offered to replace the unit with a full custom tile shower (something that we are very experienced in installing) which is more expensive, as compensation for the issue with the leak, but the client turned it down. We have fixed the issue as requested by the client, and stand by our work as completed to date."

I have nothing but great things to say about Calyx! I didn't review all A's just to be nice. They were absolutely incredible... professional, the quality of the work was above and beyond and they finished one month AHEAD of schedule without cutting any corners. I gave them a magazine picture of how I wanted my custom bookshelves designed - and they matched it exactly! I would highly recommend Calyx. George Jr., the project manager, was available night and day and personally visited to make sure that the work was done in a quality manner. Every single sub-contractor was outstanding. 100% highly recommended!

When we were ready to begin the process of adding a bathroom to a room in our house, I reached out to friends who had recently completed renovation work. No one would recommend their contractors. I noticed Calyx signs going up and down in my neighborhood and called for a quote. From that first phone call to the completed bathroom all of Calyx, including Bob, George Jr and George Sr were amazing. The communication of progress, expectations, and the high quality of work left me with absolutely the best experience ever. From the day of demolition to the final inspection was less than 2 months. The amount we were quoted was exactly what we paid, plus one small overage based on a decision my husband and I made. All the workers through our house those two months were respectful, friendly, courteous, and professional. Also, it's nice to know there is a two year warranty: ten minutes after George Jr left for the last time, I was admiring the bathroom, and I noticed a very small leak. I called George and a plumber came the next day to fix it, no extra charge. I have already recommended Calyx to all my friends and neighbors and now to the world.

Exceptionally well! This was our first home remodel where we hired a contractor and team. We have done other work/projects on our own around the house but knew for the money we planned on spending we wanted everything done right and timely. Bob, Julie, and Melo could not have been more professional and easy to work with! They provided detailed and itemized quotes and updates on a regular bases. Every junction was clearly defined and billing was easy to understand and match to the work completed. We added a few change orders that made the overall project a bit more than the original quote but we were kept up to date on everything we changed and knew what to expect. We are so happy to be back in our home and everyone who sees the finished work is extremely impressed.

We could not be happier with the process or the results! Everyone at Calyx was wonderful to work with and incredibly skilled. The work required was extensive and was completed in a timely manner. The project manager kept in contact throughout the renovation and we always felt like each person working on our house genuinely cared about producing the best result possible. I felt that we were lucky to have true craftsmen working on the project. We had workmen in and out of the house for a couple of months, and they were all pleasant and courteous. I could not recommend this company more. We would definitely use them on our next project.

We were very pleased with the results from Calyx. They were professional and did good work across the board. The project proceeded as quickly as the town inspectors would allow (widening the entrance to the kitchen required structural work). Calyx stuck to the budget and there were no surprises along the way. I would hire them again for future work.

Calyx did an excellent job on my kitchen remodel. Two walls were removed and a huge island was put in. The wife couldn't be happier with the cabinets. The team works very well together and is very helpful during the entire process. The lead finish carpenter (?) was very knowledgeable and was a real perfectionist which I like. George Jr. always responded via email and texts very promptly which was appreciated. They did an excellent job of keeping the work area as clean as possible. The work was completed right on schedule. The only reason the total paid was more than the estimate (which was much lower than anyone else in the area) was because we kept adding upgrades that were well worth it! I would highly recommend Calyx and would happily hire them again in the future.

The entire project went very well. The plan was laid out for us in detail before we signed the contract. Once we had picked out our cabinets, countertop, flooring, etc., work began within a few weeks as promised. Everyone we dealt with was very professional and did high quality work. Lauren, our project manager, followed up on a regular basis. Any questions or concerns were imediately addressed. It was completed within the expected time frame and the finished kithchen actually exceeded our expectations.

Calyx removed all bathroom fixtures, demolished the floor, sistered and supported some of the joists, installed a new flat subfloor, tiled the bathroom with tiles that I supplied. and reinstalled all the fixtures with new plumbing. They also re-drywalled a section of the bathroom wall that was missing. They initially told me that the work could take up to two weeks, and they ended up finishing in 10 days - I was very pleased. While I initially felt the quote was on the pricey side, given the accelerated timeframe, and excellent job that they did, I believe it was a fair price.

Calyx was very professional from our initial meeting to the final walk through. Bob (the owner) had consulted with us about the project and listened to all our needs which was evident in the detailed proposal outlining what services were being provided coupled with a realistic timeline. In the process of remodeling, we did work with their vendors in selecting various materials - Paul at Simon Supply was extremely helpful and got us exactly what we wanted. We were happy to deal with such good vendors and to hear from the vendors how pleasant it was for them to work with Calyx (this gave us further reassurance that we picked a quality subcontractor). Communication on the project was relatively open during the entire project whereby we knew what was happening next. We would definitely use them again as they were able to work within our budget, the final product was what we agreed upon and the fact that everyone at Calyx (from top down) was professional.

in both cases, Calyx was professional, on time, attentive to our needs, and responsive in the rare case where we had concerns. Were they the cheapest quote? not always, but I am willing to pay for excellent work, and Calyx worked to that standard. I would not hesitate to call them for any future project and I routinely recommend them to friends.

We picked Calyx after seeing their reviews on Angie's list and after meeting with Bob. We loved their work on our upstairs bathroom and kitchen ceiling and didn't think twice about hiring them again for the renovation of our 1st floor bathroom. The staff members communicated with us efficiently via e-mail, phone and in person. The work done is high quality and done right the first time. We know we could have had the project done with another company for a lower price, but I don't think we would have received the quality work and materials that we received when we choose Calyx. We are already thinking about future updates we would like to make to our home and know we will hire Calyx for the jobs.

Went well. This was a small job for a construction company, but they took it on and were able to fit it in with their larger jobs. Once construction was started it went very quickly. I'm no expert, but it all looks like really nice work.

Roofing, Chimney Repair
Very poorly. Roof was left open during a rainstorm resulting in flooding inside the house. After completion of the job, a roof leak occurred that had not previously existed. ALMOST 2 YEARS LATER, DESPITE A NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS, CALYX CANNOT RENDER THE ROOF WEATHER TIGHT. Still getting water in the house during rainstorms. I strongly recommend you stay away from this contractor. They have not stood by their work and I'll have to pay someone else to fix the problem that Calyx created.

"Thank you for the review. We are sorry that you feel like this issue has not been addressed. We would like to clarify that the roof was not left open at any time. There was a small leak inside the fireplace that occurred months after we replaced the roof. Upon learning about this leak, we sent over the original roofer to assess the source of the leak and he replaced part of the roof. A few months later, there were some more drips again, so we had the roofer over again to try a different remedy. Unfortunately, the leak occurred again a few more months later, so we sent over 4 different employees and contractors to try a different solution. The slight leak does not occur every rainstorm, only in certain conditions so it has been extremely difficult to determine the cause. We have been honoring our warranty since we are still actively trying to find the cause of the leak and have not walked away from the issue. We advised that we are still willing to work with you to find a solution and have stayed in contact with you to get this resolved."
