I had an ongoing foul odor in our kitchen. It was intermittent, but smelled like sewage. When the plumber came he searched around for possible causes. He found that 2 pipes had not been properly capped after an extensive remodeling project by a previous contractor. I was eternally grateful!!!

This is our second time using Mertz plumbing. Being new to the Pittsburgh area we have had a real hard time not only finding quality work but customer service as well. Mertz are very courteous, prompt and are very knowledgeable in their field. Definitely adding them to the speed dial for all future plumbing work!

They did a good job. I liked his professionalism. He was very straightforward. He did not try to sell me something that was not needed done. He told me that everything was laid out in my written proposal and he started the work the next morning, i.e., in less than 12 hours. He was very quick and responsive. He understood that the tenants did not have proper sewerage and that the appliances were backing up. The line was dug by hand and he came and piped in everything. He left the house at 7 o'clock on a Monday evening and everything was finished with inspection and covered up by 12 o'clock in the afternoon on Tuesday.

Initial visit was on time, estimate was delivered same day, Matt and his team assisted with local regulations, excavated and installed new line while another team worked inside the basement to prep and install all internal parts. Matt's team returned for final inspection and backfilled. Whole process went as painlessly as it could.I have had other work done by Matt Mertz Plumbing and have always been very pleased. Will call again with out hesitation.

We previously had some water pipes break due to the cold weather. We saw more water in our garage on a Sunday morning. We sort of panicked and called Matt Mertz Plumbing due to good Angies List reviews. The plumber came our house very quickly. He inspected the situation and found the problem after a half hour. The cause was an ice backup outside and causing a melting inside the garage. He basically didn't do any plumbing work. But he still charged the full $250 for a half hour of time which is the "emergency rate." Needless to say, we feel we were taken advantage of due to the situation. They may do good work, but I doubt I would call them again because of this.

I called because I came home from work and found hot water leaking underneath my dishwasher. I couldn't tell if a pipe or hose caused the leak. Since the water was hot, there was condensation everywhere, including underneath my sink. I shut the water off and called the emergency number. Matt told me how to shut off the valve to the dishwasher. I setup an appointment for the next day so someone could check where the leak was coming from. The timeframe for the appointment was between 12 and 4. The guys that showed up were professional. They checked the leak and determined that a dishwasher part was causing the leak so they couldn't fix it. The appointment only took about 10 minutes total but I thought the cost (150) was still high. In future I won't call for plumbing service unless absolutely sure that it's something they can fix.

Response from Matt Mertz Plumbing Trenchless Sewer Repair Expert
The customer was made aware of the charges before we came out. Matt spent over 15 minute on the phone with her at 9:30pm. He explained to her how to shut the kitchen down so that she would not have to pay for emergency service that evening and still have water through out the rest of her home. She was also made aware that we do not fix kitchen appliances and that there may be a chance that we could not fix the problem. The customer understood this and scheduled the appointment for the next day. Unfortunately when we arrived there, the problem was the dishwasher. We tested the lines for leaks and there was none. The customer paid for our service.

The work on the pipe went very quickly, smoothly, and reasonably priced. Plumber even offered to help me to get a coupon when I couldn't locate mine. An estimate was also given on replacing a shower faucet verbally, but I was told I needed to call back to schedule that work to be completed in the future. I called within a couple days and was told that they needed to send out the plumber for an estimate once again as there was nothing written and plumber couldn't remember the estimate. I explained my home and the work that was previously done just days earlier and that the plumber already gave me an estimate, certain that he would be able to remember so that we could get him in complete the last job. He remembered, but only somewhat so after numerous phone calls, I was told he would have to come out again to look at the job. Please keep in mind, with the first job, he stayed and completed the work right after he told me his estimate. I assumed that when I called to complete the rest of the job, he would come out, look at the shower, remember the two hour quote he gave me, and get right to work just like the first time!! Unfortunately, I stayed home that day to get the call that he was on his way but found out that he was only coming for an estimate. His time would not include fixing what I already agreed to have him fix!!!! I simply don't have the time to keep taking off work for them to keep forgetting their estimates because they didn't write it down and need to come back and fix it later. I would have had it all done in the first visit if they would have planned it in their time!!! Extremely disappointed in the way this was handled. I understand they are busy this time of year, which is why they need to be efficient with their planning. We customers are busy and don't have time or ability to keep taking days off to wait around for forgotten estimates and then waiting again another day for them to return to do another estimate, then call once again to schedule the appointment for what I wanted done the first day! Extremely disappointed and I cancelled.

Response from Matt Mertz Plumbing Trenchless Sewer Repair Expert
The initial call came in as a burst pipe as an emergency. While our plumber was there she asked for us to look at installing a tub and shower faucet. Our plumber looked at the work and said that we could install a new faucet for them. The customer and her husband called back the following week to schedule. They both insisted on a firm price before the work is done. Since our plumber did not give them a written estimate, we wanted to send him back for FREE to give her the detailed written estimate. Our plumber called the customer to let them know that he was heading over for the FREE estimate and she said if she agrees with the estimate she wants him to do it then. Unfortunately, it is 2 degrees in Pittsburgh, PA right now and our plumbers along with every other plumbing company is busy with frozen and burst pipes. So, our plumber did not have time to do so. I also want to mention that this faucet replacement that the customer wanted was cosmetic and that there was no leak or immediate danger. Since our plumber would not cancel his other calls for the day to get her job done- the customer talked down to my plumber then called to let me know she was unhappy. I told her I apologize but we can not cancel other calls for that work. I offered to give her a discount but she was rude and started to laugh for no reason. We feel that we did everything that we could. In the business that we are in, we have to take the emergency calls and schedule routine work. We made every attempt to make this customer happy, but sadly you can not please everyone.- Lisa

Sewage backed up to our basement while we ran the laundry (which is also located in the basement) on Jan 12, so we thought the drain pipe must be clogged. We called Matt Mertz plumbing (because of the good reviews from the angiest list) the next morning, and they were able to come before noon the same day. The man was first trying to use snake to unclog the pipe from the cleanout but realized that the cleanout was disconnected to the main pipe. He told us that this was emergent and gave us a quote (about $3200) to start the job. Firstly, we had no idea how much work this would involve and what would be a reasonable charge (with that price quote, we thought they would have to either send a bunch of plumbers here or take many hours to fix the problem ). And, with this situation we were not sure if we should wait and call other plumbers to compare the price. The owner, Matt, later also called us and told us that we should start the work as soon as possible, or there might be even worse damage. A little later, two men came in the afternoon to start the job. They dug a hole around the cleanout (which and replaced a broken trap with a new one. It took them around TWO HOURS (they start digging the hole a little before 3 PM and finish putting the clean out back at around 4:30 PM and then they spent about 20 minutes or so cleaning, but did not leave until after 5 PM) to finish in the afternoon on Jan 13. Since they had to wait for the county to inspect the hole, they came back the next day to backfill the dirt (which took them about 10 minutes). The final charge was $2500. We did appreciate that it was lower than the quote (we need to clarify that we did not say we will give them bad review if they don't lower our price. We only mentioned that we had read a lot of their reviews and noticed that those who pay around $3000 had much more extensive project than the one we had), but still, we thought the cost was incredibly too high for the service we have received, even though we appreciated their promptness. Since we believed that they own the dump truck, we don't think the equipment should cost that high (the hole was dug by two men labor, not with any other equipment). If customers would have known the dump truck could cost another thousand of dollar, I think most customers would rather not to have it for the project like this and just to leave the dirt next to it and back fill it later.
Description of Work: dug a hole (about 2x3 feet) around the cleanout located right next to our patio, replaced a bad house trap, and back fill the dirt.

What the customer does not understand is the cost of permits, charges for the dump truck, the stone, material, labor rate. We believe that the price is fair. The job did go quicker that expected so Matt lowered the price by 800.00 and also the customer used a coupon on top of that. The customer said if we did not lower the price he would leave us a bad review. We lowered the price and he still gave us a bad review. We stand behind the charges completely and feel the charges are fair. The times this man states are not correct. They are grossly understated. Digging a hole takes longer that two hours and backfilling absolutely takes longer than 10 minutes. Please take the time look at the other reviews. Other customers feel that our pricing is reasonable. Thank you.

The work was performed to our satisfaction. Matt has even provided photographs at each stage of the work performed as documentation. Matt and his crew were extremely courteous, friendly, respectful and let us know each day when they were leaving and reported on anticipated work progress for the following day. I would highly recommend Matt Mertz Plumbing.
Description of Work: Matt Mertz came to the house, discussed the problem and provided a written estimate within several days. After a few phone calls to answer questions, we made arrangements for the work to be performed. Matt provided an estimated start date of December 9. His crew was at the house on December 9 and began work. The work included excavating the rear of the home and a portion of the side of the house down to the footer, power washing the concrete block, repairing the damaged mortar joints inside the garage and on the external portion of the house. The outside foundation was tar sealed and foam board was installed. The French drain piping was installed and a new downspout feed was installed and diverted to the lower yard area. The excavated area was filled with gravel and the excavated soil was hauled away. The inside walls of the garage were remortared. The work was completed within 6 days. The work was performed in the "dead of winter". As a result, soil was placed (over the gravel fill) to cover the area that was excavated and in the spring, the crew will return to contour the yard, reinstall the stone path that was removed during the excavation and to reseed the lawn.

I called Matt Mertz plumbing when my plumbing backed up in August of 2013 and sewage water started seeping through my foundation. They promptly sent a representative to snake my plumbing line and run a camera to diagnose the problem. Unfortunately, the line was too severely clogged to run the camera. They gave me an estimate to repair the pipes underground. I was 9 months pregnant at the time and unable to use any of the facilities. The owner came out to my home to personally survey the damage for the estimate. It was a Thursday prior to the labor day holiday weekend. He advised he could have a crew out Tuesday after the holiday if we were ready. We explained the sooner the better since my due date was only days away. He then promised to have a crew at my home the following day by 8 am to start excavation of my foundation. They were able to complete the job in one day and without any "emergency fees" so that we would be able to use the facilities. Matt Mertz himself was present several times throughout the repair, and the other representatives of his company working in our home were professional and courteous. They laid down cloths throughout the home preventing any sewage mess and the concrete work looked wonderful. I ended up going into labor that evening only hours after they left. I was so relieved that I didn't have to worry knowing the repairs were done neatly and correctly and I would be able to bring my baby home with working plumbing.

Had fracture of two cast iron drain pipes, with the 4" enclosed in a box out. I removed a portion of the drywall to expose the cracked section. Spoke to Shirl on the phone and scheduled work after the weekend. Mike and his assistant arrived on time, cut out the failed portions of the pipe and replaced with PVC. The entire job took about 3 hours and they were able to get the cast iron out and new pipe in with minimal demolition on the box out drywall. They worked efficiently and cleaned up everything after finishing.

I called Mertz at 6 p.m. on a Saturday for an emergency call. They explained that they charge $250/hour for emergency service. Although that seems high, and other reviewers here list a lower emergency rate, I agreed. They got here in about an hour, and the repair took 10 minutes. (This was a simple repair; I just don't happen to know how to do it. I manage rental properties, and my plumbing guy is out of town currently.) Hunter then provided a non-itemized invoice that simple stated $325 as the amount due. I questioned the breakdown (he said $250 labor, $75 parts), and then further questioned the parts pricing, since I know that the 2-inch metal repair piece is not expensive. He claimed that they use expensive parts to keep the labor costs down. I provided a credit card and then went home and wrote a negative review on Angie's list. On Monday, owner Matt Mertz called me, upset with the review but ready to talk honestly about the charge. He indicated that Hunter had had a long day, and he agreed that the $75 parts charge may have been somewhat high. He removed that charge, and I have improved my overall rating on Angie's list. Although I feel that it'd be ideal to be charged reasonably the first time, I am glad the owner called to correct the problem.

I was having 25 people to a Christmas family dinner and my kitchen sink wouldn't drain. I called Mertz and the woman who answered my call was very nice. She promised to get right back to me and she did. The plumbers came just as my guests were arriving, but had the job completed within an hour. The $150 hourly charge for emergencies seemed high to me, but I don't know what other plumbers would have charged. I was glad I called them and they took care of the problem.

He rebuilt a toilet and installed a cartridge to stop a leaking hand-held shower the next visit.
