I contacted Matt Mertz Plumbing for a second opinion/estimate on some sewer work as my line has roots in it. They videoed the line, discussed with me what they were seeing, answered all of my questions, and talked through my different options. Their estimates were right in line with what I had received previously. I was very pleased with them and would recommend. As an additional note, it was snowy outside, and he was diligent about putting plastic shoe covers over the bottom of his boots every time before entering the house so that there was no snow/salt tracked inside. This respect for the house was very appreciated.
Description of Work: Received a (free) estimate on some sewer line work. The tech (Joe) videoed my line and advised me on my different options.

The plumber who came was great very professional and very clean. He was sure to put down tarps when he was bringing his equipment into our house and mostly cleaned up all the mess that he made. He did try very hard to unclog our drains using several different pieces of equipment but it was later determined that there must've been a break in our outside lines and we would need to have our yard dug up. We did end up using a different plumber to do the excavating work only because Mertz price was about $600 more than someone else we found using Angie's list.

since the sewer is no longer clogged, they must have done an effective job. the guys were all courteous and professional and left the job site in good condition. the cost seemed really high since there were 2 guys for a full day and one for a few hours.

Matt and his guys are terrific. They put in a full day or work, minimize the amount of mess created, clean up at the end of the day and do a great job. We appreciate how well they minimize disruptions to the rest of the house. At the end of the job, the pressure washed the sidewalks and porch, which had been covered in mud, replanted the bushes, seeded the yard where they had been working and covered all of the mud and seed with straw. They do great work. Highly recommend.
Description of Work: Replaced parts of sewer line from the house to the street. Relined the sections that could be relined so that they did not have to dig up the entire front yard.

Work took two days; one to do most of the work and replace the drain, and one for the county inspection, refilling, and reconcreting. To the best of my ability to assess, the work was done well. If the concrete wasn't going to be busted back out again in a couple of months because the rest of the sewer lines need to be replaced as well, I might not be happy with how the new concrete meshed with the rest of the floor, but given that we all knew by that point that that was going to happen, putting a lot of effort into that was somewhat pointless and they probably acted accordingly. This is perfectly fine with me for something that's not going to be the permanent state. Despite the jackhammering, digging in soil inside the finished basement, and other significant construction going on, everything was left clean and in good shape. Overall, I was happy with the experience, and will probably use them for the larger work next year.

I had a leak coming through my kitchen ceiling, which I assumed was a water line. I had never used MMP before, but my standard plumber couldn't come out and I needed someone that day. I called first thing in the morning- they were able to come out the same day I called them and did not charge me an emergency fee. Jim, who came out, was very nice and went to work finding the leak. It was a tricky job- took us awhile to find the leak, which was a pinhole leak in the water line, with him digging through wet drywall, and then my pipes were very close to the floorboard, so they were harder than normal to fix. Jim did a fantastic job and was respectful of my house, wearing booties and placing drop cloths all over while he worked and then sweeping up at the end. I would definitely use them again!

Excellent. I contacted them the day before, but they seem to leave the call center @ 4pm. They called first thing the next day (just after 8am) and left a message. I called back, and they scheduled the service for the same day. They sent a plumber who had been to my house before -- and he was, once again, completely professional and transparent about the work he was doing. I appreciate the explanations, since I try to do as much repair work as I can, myself -- and want to understand what is going on. I also appreciate the obvious care he puts into his work. I'm glad they are there to call.
Description of Work: Repaired -- actually rebuilt -- a trap under a basement sink. The humidifier from the furnace drained into this sink, so it was leaking all over the floor. The trap failed suddenly.

The strength of Matt Mertz plumbing is in the personnel that actually comes to your house. While you no longer get Matt, himself (even though we used to, since we were one of his earliest customers, he hires good people. We've had several things done over the years, and the jobs are always done with complete professionalism and high quality. Now, this experience wasn't exactly perfect. I originally called them the Monday morning before Thanksgiving, saying my water heater was leaking at the top and asking if they would be able to put in a new water heater when they came. I was scheduled for the next day (Tuesday) from 12-4. This means the plumber might arrive as late as 4pm. So, you have to leave a pretty large window of time when you must be prepared to be without water for a couple of hours. And, I asked -- multiple times -- if they would be able to put in a new water heater even if they came late. I was reassured they would. Around 1:50pm I received a call that the plumber was running late, and likely would come around 4:30. But 4:30 came and there was no call. They always call around 1/2 hour before coming. So, I called both the main number and the wireless number of the plumber that called me -- no answer, either place. By the time the plumber arrived, well after 5pm, he said I needed a new water heater and it was too late to install it that day. Needless to say, I wasn't happy. He claimed that just prior to Thanksgiving was a particularly difficult time of year -- but, then don't make me waste a whole day waiting! I could have either called someone else or scheduled for a time they would actually come to fix the problem! My time is valuable as well. When the first plumber came he said the work order only indicated a leak at the top of the water heater and that I might not need a new one. If so, the person in the call center screwed up -- badly. I asked several questions about water heater delivery, since I strongly suspected I needed a new one. And, even if I did not, any savvy plumbing operation should suspect a new water heater might needed anytime one leaks. So, the young man that finally came on the Friday morning after Thanksgiving installed a new water heater in a couple of hours -- and he was just great. He did a wonderful job -- I could not be happier with that experience or the result. But, the call center needs some help. I do think they can fix this, and, if so, it would be worth it, since they seem to have an excellent crew. But, in the meantime the downside is that you want your plumber to be responsive to emergencies -- and that call center would seem to be problematic in that regard. I so wish they would fix it.

As part of buying my home, sewer inspection showed roots in the line and a portion of terra cotta that was broken. Matt provided an explanation of the issues and potential remedies. After buying the home, his team came in and repaired the sewer by putting in a sewer liner. As part of the work they had to dig up some of the driveway. They repaired it. They also put in new seed where the ground had been dug up. The crew was professional and courteous. They answered all questions happily.

I went into my basement to do laundry.I then a see a yellow thick wire connected to my yard electric outlet. This wire went all the way to a VAN(Matt Mertz Plumbing) approximately hundred yard from my electric socket. It was connected to their portable heater. When i went and asked them why is it connected to my electric outlet they replied stating that his Boss Matt asked them to connect it.(looks like they have been using their portable heater for atleast an hour) The work they are performing is not for my property. So i called their office and their representative stated that they were performing work for our community and she would ask them not to do that.(my community didnt ask prior permission from me) You just cant go into someones property and use their amenities. Its a Lousy act and totally unprofessionlism

He was experienced, efficient, and took the time to point out some problems that should have been identified by the home inspector before I purchased the house. He asked if the property transfer was between relatives (it wasn't), perhaps that was the explanation for the inspector's not pointing out current code violations. I appreciated his candor and taking note of the peripheral issues, not just swapping out the water heaters.
Description of Work: My water heater stopped working. The Matt Mertz plumber arrived at the appointed time the next day, assessed the situation, and determined that I did need a new water heater, which he installed. During the process, he commented that the venting on the old water heater was collapsing within the chimney, so he replaced and corrected that as well. That could have been a serious safety issue, as carbon monoxide was being released in the house. Thankfully, I had only been living there a few weeks before this occurred. He tested the water pressure, which was over twice the normal pressure (putting stress on the pipes and water heater) and replaced a faulty regulator.

Really well, starting with the first contact. An appointment was made right away, for about a week after my contact. The evening before, they called us to remind us of the appointment. The craftsman called when he was on his way the next morning. The craftsman parked a well-marked truck in our driveway. He came to the door with a tool bag and a smile. He was aware of the list of jobs we had identified. He approached each one in a careful, highly professional manner. Where repair/replacement parts were needed, he had them on the truck. He worked diligently and neatly, and cleaned up after each job. He did not exaggerate any job to make it seem necessary to do more work or make additional replacements. As a last step, he checked the water pressure to assure us that it was in the right range. He deducted the company's Angie's List discount with no questions asked. I paid by check; he refused my offer of a tip. The entire experience was excellent.
Description of Work: Several jobs including - replacing a kitchen faucet - untangling a kitchen sink spray hose - replacing a spring on a bathtub drain - replacing a bathroom faucet - tracking down a partially closed valve restricting another faucet - replacing the flapper on a toilet - replacing a washer and smoothing a valve seat on an outdoor faucet

It was one of the worst experiences of my life in dealing with professionals whose only quality point is that they showed up on time. Installed a toilet then did not check to make sure it flushed before leaving house. Workers that complained while working. Taking two or three visits to fix a toilet and then trying to claim each time that it was a new problem so not covered by the warranty in their work and having to argue to get the fixes done at no additional cost. One of the toilets "fixed" we have had to buy additional parts for twice already and it still leaks and doesn't flush appropriately, runs almost constantly. Sink in main bathroom not fixed properly, then leaked into the vanity below destroying countless toiletries and items stored there, less than a week after he supposedly fixed it. Mertz, the owner himself I spoke with, refused to come and fix the problem, claimed no responsibility and then my family had to hire another plumber at over $200 to fix Mertz's deficient work. I truly feel that the workers took advantage of the fact that my father was sick with cancer and was unable to watch them while working to make sure they were doing things right.
Description of Work: The provider was supposed to install a new toilet, fix 2 other toilets, fix 3 sink faucets, install new shower head, and inspect shower for leakage.

I, Matt Mertz, along with my crew of employees pride ourselves on customer satisfaction. In the event work was not completed to our customer's standards, we do whatever we need to in order to make the situation right. If a customer is not happy with work completed we expect to hear from them immediately so that we may remedy the issue. Customers' also have a chance to voice their experience on our customer survey that we send out after a job is finished. Our goal as a company is to get the job right done the FIRST time. We keep the customer's home neat and clean and keep our level of professionalism at the highest standard. Unfortunately professionals in the plumbing industry can be stereotyped to "take advantage of customers" - Matt Mertz Plumbing does NOT fall into that category. We treat our customers as people with the utmost respect for them and hope that we are not being confused with one of our competitors regarding this poor experience.

Had an emergency situation come up while installing a new toilet in our home. Water was dripping through the floor and into the basement level. Called Matt Mertz on a Saturday around 4:00 and they were out within a couple of hours. The plumber found a corroded joint in the pipe behind the bathroom wall. He was able to remove the old pipe fragments without cutting into the wall and he replaced everything with new parts. He also helped me reset the commode that I had just installed/uninstalled. The only drawback was the price. At $250/hour, every minute the plumber spent there was costing me over four dollars. With a little less chatter, the job might have gotten done in less than the two hours I was billed. Nonetheless, the guy was polite, professional and did a great job. And, in an emergency, the price is understandable. I would use them again, but I hope next time it's during normal business hours. They honored the Angie's List coupon for $50 off service of $500 or more.

.They were absolutely awesome starting with Lisa in the office to the several plumbers I dealt with. It was all done remotely and the communication was excellent. It was a tricky problem to diagnose because the blockage was underground. They could have suggested a much more expensive remedy, but explained why they thought a lower cost high pressure clean-out made the most sense. They were right on and we have not had a drop of water in the basement since. Top notch operation.

Since this was a first for us (main water line leaking), we appreciated that they guided us through the process. They connected us with a leak detection service (American Leak Detection - also very good), and they contacted our local borough office to make arrangements with them to shut off the water and for the final inspection. They called ahead of time to let us know when they'd be arriving and they arrived on time. The guys (Ron and Dan) were very friendly and courteous, answering my questions patiently and thoroughly. They quickly went to work, working outside first and then in the basement. They covered their shoes when coming in the house and left nothing behind. They were done in about 6 hours and returned our landscaping to probably better than it was before they came LOL. We wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

When I called Matt Mertz plumbing for an estimate they said it will cost me $98 for estimate which they said will be deducted if I go thru them for the service. When I said what about the free estimates they are advertizing the lady said some conditions apply to that statement. Then I have sent an email thru AngiesList and reminded them that on AngiesList the advertize free estimate and sure enough they arranged for a free estimate. People who were supposed to estimate came on time but gave an estimate $150 more than the previous guy and I was totally OK with it but the guy also pointed out that my water heater expansion tank needs to be replaced as it is hanging down and said he will give an estimate for that too and gave me an estimate for extra $237. Later when I called another plumber they simply showed me a broken clamp and said there is nothing wrong with the expansion tank and fixed the broken clamp for free. I guess they estimator is trying to find problems which is OK but I wish he looked more closely before offering to replace a water expansion tank.

I think Pittsburgh is lucky to have Matt Mertz plumbing. I first discovered him on Angie's List, back when he used to be the plumber that actually came -- but now that he is up to something like 33 trucks, those days seem to be gone. Actually, Matt came as recently as four years ago, but a couple of years ago two very nice young men came instead of him -- for the first time. This time, they sent Shawn, who clearly knows a lot about plumbing and is very happy to be among the plumbers who work for Matt Mertz. They have this kind of combination crimping-welding tool that I've never seen before. It replaces the need to either weld or use compression joints. It's clearly an expensive tool, and apparently all Matt Mertz plumbers have them. Without that tool, this job would have been a big mess. As it was, the job wasn't all that easy -- which is part and parcel of an old house. Matt was always extremely polite and professional -- and he seems to ensure his employees have that same attitude. If that continues, Pittsburgh will be set with a good plumber for years to come.

I had scheduled for an estimate for my basement bathroom plumbing moved and renovated. This job is going to be blocking the drywall going up, so I would like it done in a timely manner. Very few plumbers are available within the month, so I was pretty excited that Matt Mertz was able to schedule an estimate so soon. I was given a 10am - 2pm window for Monday 9/22. By 2pm I had not heard from the technician and called the main office. Apparently the previous job was more than anticipated and they would not make my appointment. I would have liked to have had a call to let me know not to wait around all day, and they said they had tried to call but that they didn't have the right phone number on file for me. This is what made me fairly mad, as I only have one phone number, and it was a number the company had used to call me back on before, so to say the wrong number was on file was just a blatant lie. That combined with the fact that their estimates are NOT free ($98) and the next time they could come out was weeks from this appointment made me just go with another company.

I, Lisa, personally spoke with the person. I only spoke with her once when making the appointment. She gave me her telephone number and other information for our plumber. As a human I unfortunately made an error. I take full reasonability for this and attempt to apologize for my mistake. This business was built on being efficient and doing quality work. I in no way attempt to mess up a telephone number. I understand that any persons time is valuable. With all coupons/ads that we have, we do have an asterisk next to it for some restrictions.
