able to schedule the work within a very reasonable amount of time. Two
workers came to complete the inspection, and they seemed to be quite
knowledgeable. The services were completed quickly, and they made sure
to explain what I needed to know about our furnace. I had a problem with
an odd rattling sound and the fix but turned out to be very simple and
free. I'd highly recommend them.
JRB called sometime in the mid-afternoon to let me know they were running late by a few hours, but they would still be out that day. Two guys arrived at 830pm. I told them what I had figured out, particularly about the furnace lights indicating something was blocked. My drain line is white PVC with several 90 degree bends running to floor level where it transitioned to green garden hose that ran about 6 feet to a floor drain. You cannot see through it to see if there are any stoppages, and there is only one vent close to the start of the pipe at the highest point at the furnace, so no real places to see in or use as a clean-out port. One of the guys took a flashlight and looked up the end of the garden hose and said it was clear. The vent also no longer had any standing water below it, but the furnace had been off almost 12 hours and it had been very slowly draining all day. They did not pour water down the drain tube to test that it was actually draining properly.
The gurgling noise I heard was from the inducer motor. There was water inside of the housing. They said the motor was not spinning at the RPMs it was supposed to and could not get the condensation out and that was why the furnace was not working. They told me the motor would be expensive and they could call tomorrow to find out availability, etc, and all I owed them was for the visit and diagnosis. The next afternoon they called and told me the part, with 1 year warranty and installation, would be ~$580. Not aware of any other options at the time, I said OK, and they said they would keep me updated. I again consulted the internet and found the exact part for $160, and with 1-day rush shipping with Saturday delivery, it was still ~1/3 of the cost I was quoted. The online part was brand new and had a 1 year warranty, so I decided to give it a shot.
Saturday morning the part was delivered. Half an hour later we had heat. Half an hour after that the exact same problem occurred with the new motor BECAUSE THE DRAIN LINE WAS CLOGGED. As soon as the water level got to a certain level inside the housing, the motor would slow down. The drain line was clogged with hard water crud where the PVC transitioned to garden hose because there was a 90 degree bend combined with several reducing adapters, and the garden hose was also a smaller diameter. My husband spent $30 on new larger clear tubing to replace the garden hose and some better non-reducing threaded adapters for easy cleaning later. Furnace has been working perfectly since. The old "bad" inducer motor was tested and it is working fine. I guess we now have a spare. I am just glad I only paid $240 rather than almost $600 for a part we didn't actually need.
I had questions about some vents in my living room and they were able to show me that the vents were actually adjustable and that I didn't need new vents after all. I asked for advice about improving the cooling of my top floor and they need to come back in the Spring when the temperature is warmer to assess the situation. I will definitely have them return then. I am so glad to have found JRB Heating and Cooling. I have already referred them to some friends and will continue to do so.
recommendations for upkeep of the furnace and boiler. They noticed a gas
leak on the boiler and fixed it themselves. Left everything clean and did the job quickly.
Would use again for sure!
future and JRB showed up on time with adequate notice beforehand. As an owner of an older house (65 years), with what is
probably the original furnace, I am always skeptical when service people offer a low price to inspect equipment. My cynical nature
always feels that I am going to be told about some horrendous problem and the repair or replacement cost will be astronomical.
I was very please that JRB performed the services requested with no other charges or scare tactics. Kudos to Jeff and crew for being
very professional. I would be pleased to recommend them to anyone and will be using them in the future for any problems that might
occur.
They were very professional and efficent.
IF there is any "down" side, it is they told me they usually change furnace filters, but mine didn't need it. I wish they could have left new filters behind as part of the service to me, since most other people get them anyway. But otherwise, everything was great!
Professional, fast, polite. Answered questions .
I would use their services again.I don't remember what the "special" price was, so I put down $70.00, which is not far from the case I am sure. Whatever it was, I thought it was reasonable. I had not had anyone in to check the furnace in several years.
