My husband and I purchased our first home on June of 2011. We purchased the home from a relocation company since the seller was relocating due to work. The seller sold the home to the relocation company and then about a week later we purchased it from the relocation company. In the time between the two sales, the relocation company had demanded that a few odds and ends be fixed around the house before we bought it and the seller agreed to pay for this. The sale would not have been able to occur on June 10, 2011, if the projects were not completed. The seller's agent said that she had a construction worker, Todd, who took care of these types of jobs for her. Todd did not come until the day before we purchased our home, which happened to be the day of our final walk through (June 9, 2011). He was finishing up around 4 p.m., Eastern time, right when we arrived for the final walk through with our agent. At that time we realized that Todd was in fact related to the seller's agent, as they shared the same last name. When the seller's agent arrived, Todd had already left, but we asked her if she was related to Todd and she reluctantly let us know it was her son. One of the tasks to be done was to replace the wood at the bottom of our back door due to rotting. He did not even have to purchase materials for the replacement, as he "helped himself" to some leftover Trex in our shed and used it without our permission. The seller's agent, his mom, had given him the key to the shed so he could store his tools in it during the week he was supposed to be at the house. As it turns out, he did not replace the lock or key and we had to go out and purchase a new one. While doing our final walk through we saw that he did not actually put the dryer vent into the connector for the vent to blow outdoors when he finished installing the new dryer flap for the outside of the house. It was hanging down and if the dryer had been turned on, the dryer would have been venting into the basement. Also, he did not complete the one task that needed to be done in regard to our fireplace. He said he went up on the roof, checked the fireplace, and felt that no work needed to be done. In retrospect I wander if the work really did need to be done. In the end, we had some extra money left over. The seller's agent had asked if we wanted to put it towards a new interior and exterior door for the back of our house because of the wood rotting. We agreed to this arrangement the morning of our settlement. The week after our settlement I provided Todd with what types of Home Depot doors we wanted as well as what types of fixtures. It took many phones calls back and forth with him, his mother, and our Realtor to finally finish this project. He was incredibly unprofessional and rude during the two month ordeal. I made several calls and left many voice mails asking him to call me back with updates throughout the entire process, and they went unanswered. When the work was finally done, I spent about two hours cleaning up after him and his crew. Gum, debris, and trash were outside my house. He had put the screen in the exterior door without asking me which insert we wanted to be installed. I would have asked him to install the glass, but he assumed I wanted the screen insert. The evening that the doors were installed I spent a long while trying to take the screen out and put the glass in. I had to Google instructions, as he had thrown out all of the paperwork for both doors. In the end I had to ask him to come do it for me, because once I had gotten the screen out the glass wouldn't fit because the door was crooked. It took a call and voice mail to Todd, and a call to his mother, to finally have him return my call. When he called me back and was incredibly rude and made me feel stupid and annoying that I didn't want the screen in the door in the Summer like all his other customers. He was actually yelling at me on the telephone and it was audible to those around me. He told me to leave the glass insert outside on our patio and he would complete the project the next morning. It took three full days for him to actually come. Furthermore, he did not purchase the correct locks I had requested (I had wanted deadbolts) and the door hand on the exterior door constantly falls off which poses a safety hazard and is a nuisance. Of course, the invoice came speedy and on time and I paid him immediatly. In the end, I feel like a fool for being talked into using the money for the door and using him as the contractor. It was too important of a decision to be made while under the stress of purchasing our first home. He has left a bad taste in my mouth since this was my first home project in my first home with my first contractor. From now on, I will do lots of research, use Angie's List, and really think about any work I will have done to my home.
