20 years ago my grandfather sank two metal posts 4 feet into the ground, encased in cement blocks.  I think one was used for a basketball backboard and I'm not sure what the other was for.  The portion of the poles that stuck out above the ground had rusted out at ground level and had fallen down years ago leaving rusted,  jagged metal edges sticking out of the ground about an inch. My dog cut her foot on one of the jagged edges and since I was having company over with kids who would be playing in the back yard, I wanted the remains of the two poles gone for good before they arrived.  I had no idea how deep the remains of these poles were submerged in my yard nor did I expect them to be encased in huge blocks of cement.  Initially I figured they could just be easily dug out with a shovel and had contacted someone to dig them out.  This person ended up not showing up as scheduled so I called Kyle at 2 PM on a Friday to see if it was possible for him to come by and take out the poles before my company arrived with their kids.  Kyle was kind enough to shuffle some things around and he arrived at my house at 5 PM.  Thankfully, he didn't underestimate the job as I had done and he brought the right tool with him.... a jackhammer and a chain.  He immediately went to work jackhammering the cement around the 1st pole.  Neither of us could believe how much cement was used to secure the poles.  It took Kyle a few hours to get enough of the cement broken up and cleared away from the 1st pole before he could attach a chain to the pole and pull it out with his truck.  Kyle was very careful not to run over my plants and because he jackhammered much of the cement into smaller pieces before pulling the rest of the cement blocks out of the ground, only a very small portion of my grass had been dug up.  Had he not used the jackhammer, I would have had two large gaping holes and a big portion of lawn to replace.  After the first pole was cleared, the 2nd pole came out relatively easy.  Kyle placed the huge blocks of cement in the back of his pickup truck and hauled them away for me.  The whole job took about 4 hours.  I really believe that most people would have given up and left without finishing the job.  However, Kyle was a man on a mission.  He worked diligently and wasn't about to give up until the job was complete despite having to work in the dark towards the end of the job.  Kyle mentioned to me that he is an Iraq War Army Veteran.  God Bless our Vets.  They truly are special people. It is no wonder our Military is unrivaled.   Kyle is professional and one of the most hard working young men I've had working for me around the house.  I will certainly keep him in mind in the future.
