I do not sub-contract or use helpers anymore; I used to run my business with helpers and sub-contractors, but decided I was doing too much "managing" and not enough actual work. Hahaha. I changed my business model and do the work at every job now. I really enjoy my job and I like getting to make people feel good about safety as well as having a better home to live in. Free estimates are easy over the phone or by email. However: I do charge for in-person estimates. I stopped doing free estimates because I get hired for most of my jobs. Driving to do estimates takes too much time away from actual work where I can get things done. This helps me keep my rates low. My phone/email estimates are 70% accurate, I charge less about 20% of the time and more about 10% of the time. I don't use paid advertising. 80% of my customers are word of mouth. I only have top ratings on Angie's list and Yelp.com. Fun facts: I have been lead electrician on television for a rehab reality show. I also teach swing dancing and have traveled the US, Canada and Europe doing this.
