We moved into our house about 7 months ago. This was the second time we used East Cost Comfort. The first time was when our heat was not working soon after we moved in. It was a broken thermocouple that Peter fixed promptly for under $100. When we turned on our air conditioning for the first time on July 3, it did not work. Tony came out promptly. The low pressure switch had been tripped. He tested our pressure and it was fine. He tested a few other things and did not find any problems so he reset the switch. The air conditioner has worked since then. We are satisfied and will call this company for a price quote when pricing out a new HVAC system.

When I called to make the appointment I was really impressed with how quickly they scheduled someone to come out. I mentioned that I found them on Angie's list and that I was looking for an hvac company to work with to do preventative maintenance twice a year, and that I was having some issues with the upstairs getting hot and the downstairs getting cold. It's a rental property and I already had my handy man out to check what he could, but I wanted an hvac company to dig deeper since the problem wasn't getting any better. I heard back from my tenant that they came by and left. They said there was nothing wrong with the unit and they advised her to cover the downstairs return vent with aluminum foil or saran wrap to see if it helps. As soon as I heard that I got two more opinions from other hvac companies I've worked with in other states and both said never cover a return vent....always opt for more return, never less. I haven't been billed yet, so I'm not sure what I will be charged for, but the grade for "professional" was because the tech told my tenant it was her perception that the air out of the vents was cold. I honestly think that was just a poor choice of words to tell someone that wakes up sweating every night. If the readings coming out of the vents were as cold as they should be, he could have worded it a different way. I'm pretty picky when it comes to customer service. I want to make it clear that I am not a p***** off customer, I just reward companies with more business when I feel they have given excellent customer service. My first impression...not so great.

Response from East Coast Comfort Inc
We are very sorry that your overall experience with us was less than satisfactory. The technician advised your tenant to experiment using a magnetic paper from Home Depot but to try using saran wrap or aluminum wrap to see if it would work before spending the money. It was a common return and either one being blocked would provide adequate return. The 1st floor was drawing all of the return so his solution to help was to draw from the 2nd floor. This was to be a trial solution in hopes of sparing the additional expense of running ductwork through to the 2nd floor. Our technicians have many years of experience, have a wonderful reputation and know what they are doing and for another contractor to make that determination having not seen it does not seem fair. Again we are sorry that you were not happy with your experience.

Troubleshooting of thermostat, blower relay, controllers, wiring, operation and fixed A/C and fan issues. Also provided extra, unasked-for services such as cleaning condenser coil, checking refrigerant charge and temps. I found technician (EM) to be very knowledgeable and helpful. He was troubleshooting over the phone and probably had a very good idea of what to do before he even saw the unit.

My house was a recently rennovated building in the Queen Village area. When the house was gutted and redone, they didn't leave any room for ductowrk. We called several companies from Angie's List, includeing ECC to see what options were available to us. As you can imagine based on their already stellar rating on AL, ECC had a very busy schedule, but we got an appointment for an estimate within a few days. The person that showed up for the estimate was prompt, and took thorough measurements of our house. He took those measurements back to his main office, and we received a basic proposal within a few days. After that, the owner of the company came out to do a second walkthrough of our house to make sure the original recommendations were sound. When I inquired about more expensive options, he steered us straight and said that they wouldn't really provide any benefit and would not be worth the added cost of the equipment or the installation costs. That in and of itself was a refreshing difference between ECC and their competitors - they didn't try to upsell us on equpiment we didn't need. When all was said and done, we decided on a three zone minisplit for the second and third floors and a single zone minisplit for the first floor in order to optimize our usage patterns and maximize the efficiency given our layout and constraints. They showed up on time for both of the days that they were in our house to do the install, and they left our house spotless. You wouldn't have known that they were even here. All of the workers were extremely polite and down to earth, and they explained every step of the process. They had no problems answering any questions I had and they were happy to do so. Ed, the owner of the company, is one of the nicest guys I have ever met. He has a great staff working for him, and he really takes pride in his work. He made sure to show up and inspect the quality of the work and made sure we understood how everything operated before the job was done. These guys were a pleasure to work with, and we will be using them for all of our heating and cooling needs in the future.
Description of Work: ECC installed two minisplit systems for me - one three zone unit and one single zone unit. The three zone unit was used to drive three inverters on my second and thrid floors, and the single zone unit was used to drive a single inverter for my entire first floor.

It was 94 degrees and the Central A/C unit stopped working. I researched Angie's list and picked East Coast Comfort, Inc due to the "A" rating and number of reviews (160). I called at 3pm, received a call back within 45 minutes and the tech service technician (Ed) was here within 15 minutes. Ed quickly diagnosed that the the thermostat had a bad connection which caused the entire A/C system to stop working. Ed also serviced the system to ensure optimal performance. East Coast Comfort, Inc was extremely responsive and the technician was courteous, professional and competent!

I received an estimate to make a hot water boiler repair from my existing vendor. After checking Angie's list, I called ECC for a second opinion. Rather than give an estimate over the phone, vendor invested in sending a technician to see the job. Vendor provided a competitive estimate. I ultimately went with my existing vendor because both estimates were approximately the same and I like to reward good vendors with my loyalty. I know I will use ECC for a job sometime.
Description of Work: Vendor gave an estimate. There was no charge for the estimate even though a technician came to look at the job site.

I submitted a report on the great work that they did fixing the botched job that our construction crew did when the a/c was added with an addition on the house. It was still to cold to really truly appreciate what a great job they did. With the 100 degree weather we have had lately our house has been dead on for the temperature we set it. We are able to adjust the flow into rooms we do not use and the units are not running full blast as they were in the past pre-ECC's fabulous repair.
Description of Work: The guys fixed the botched install in our upstairs zone. They extended the trunk and properly attached each room's connectors with the proper dampers which allow balancing the air flow to each room.

Tony took the time at the beginning of the job to explain what would occur during the installation. He and his crew were neat and courteous. The job was completed by dinnertime without any problems. Tony fully explained the touchpad thermostat before leaving. The entire work areas both outside and inside were left clean. I would highly recommend East Coast for a fair price and excellent work.

Superb from start to finish. Mary, in the office, is friendly and responsive, as were all of the people involved. This is the first time I went with the lowest bidder, and it worked out beautifully. The other bidders said I needed a lot of new ductwork and cold air returns, bigger units, placing it on the roof or in my small back yard (rather than in the alley between our rowhouses). ECC said that the unit would be fine between the houses (where it's out of sight) and that I could always add more ductwork or cold air returns after I installed it, on an as-needed basis. But as they predicted, the basement, first floor, and second floor are quite cool and comfortable, and the third is on the warm side, just as *all* of the bidders told me it would be, given my ductwork and cold air returns. The bid and installation were all done as promised and promptly and professionally. The installation went smoothly. Everyone is friendly, smart, and has a nice sense of humor to boot. ECC knows its stuff and has integrity as well as skills and professionalism. You really couldn't ask for more. A total pleasure to work with.
Description of Work: Installed Lennox central air conditioner, digital thermostat, some duct work in July 2012 and everything was superb (see report below). Called them back this year June 2013 when, a day after turning on my air, it stopped working. I called Sunday morning at 9 a.m., received a return phone call from Tony, the owner, within an hour--even though they aren't open on Sundays--and he showed up at my door 45 minutes later. As it turned out, I had been putting the air filter in the wrong place all winter, and my actual air filter was filthy and had converted my furnace to an ice sculpture. Tony diagnosed the problem instantly and my air conditioner is humming once again. He charged me for a service call because this was totally my fault but kindly gave me a discount to $121.00. I didn't change the price above because I figure most people are more interested in the cost of installing central air than in the cost of a service call.

Although Ed was late, he did call to say he was on his way. He checked out my a/c system and changed the air filter. He tested the Freon level as I have a small leak somewhere. He said the system is okay for now, but if I should notice it starting to not fully operate or constantly running I should call back.

Overall, I am very disappointed with this company. They did such a great job at first but now I will not use them ever again.
Description of Work: This company originally came out to my home in May to perform a tune up of my A/C system. The person who did the service that day stated he could not test the pressure of the system because it was too cool outside. He thought that it might need additional refrigerant but he stated that he would need to come back when it was warmer. He did a great job and I did not experience any problems at all so as a result, I gave them an A for my review. I had made another appointment for the person to come back out on June 15th to finish testing the system but I was called by their office on June 13th to cancel the appointment because one of their workers took a leave of absence. They wanted me to re-schedule but because of my job responsibilities I could not give them a new date right away. I did not worry about it because they said since it wasn't my fault that the appointment had to be re-scheduled I could call within the next few weeks if the heat became unbearable. The person I spoke to stated that they would come out in the evening when I got home from work and would not charge me overtime. Since I had such a great experience with this company and the woman was very friendly on the phone I did not have any concerns. I was sure this would not be a problem. Last week on June 20th - 22nd, the heat was over 95 degrees. I called on left messages for 3 days for someone to come out and service my unit. No one ever called me back. Now while I understand that they were probably very busy with calls those days that does not excuse them from at least calling me back to acknowledge that they received my messages. It is now June 26th and I have yet to receive a call. As a result of their negligence I had to call a different company and pay them $165 for their work. $100 of that amount was due to the fact that I had to pay this new company to come out to the house. I feel that I should not have had to pay another company to come out since ECC was suppose to come out for free. I was only suppose to pay for any refrigerant if I even needed any.

I am doing a complete renovation of my entire house and was looking for a HVAC company to design and install a complete system. I knew a lot about what I wanted, and also knew there was a lot I just didn't know about HVAC. East Coast Comfort came out and spent a lot of time listening to my ideas and making suggestions and educating me as to my options about what could be done and what shouldn't. They really made every effort to accommodate what i wanted while maintaining the integrity of the system.. ...This is one of those companies that the universe finally sends you after being battered around by dozens of hacks. Tony, Ed and the whole team did a great job from start to finnish. They were honest, professional , punctual, and knowledgable. As someone who spends a lot of time researching the right way to do things regarding home construction, I can confidently say that their quality of work and attention to detail where excellent. It was as if they were putting the system in their own home. What more could you want?

East Coast Comfort just finished installing an air conditioning system in our 1915 home and we are delighted!! From start to finish the job was 100% professional. They did exactly what they said they would do, on time, with no fuss! Here are a few of the things that made ECC a perfect choice for us. * Communications ? always called back right away and answered questions clearly. * Timeliness ? showed up exactly on time, every time. * Courteous ? without fail! This goes for Tony, Mary in the office & technicians. * System design ? Tony knows his stuff. Some details (like vent placement) aren't known till workers are on-site. * Equipment selection ? the equipment was higher-efficiency than the other contractor we seriously considered. * Price ? the price was lower than the other contractor we seriously considered. * Scope -- ECC included some things that other vendors did not, like cutting thru basement block wall. * Work ethic ? This team works hard, all the time and they seem to enjoy their work. * Workmanship ? equipment was installed in an orderly way, all vents/registers were professionally cut. This stuff takes some skill! Great clean-up also. * Coordination with others ? they took care of all the permits and also coordinated with our electrician flawlessly. * Engaged us in decisions ? Tony would present an options for our input (like vent placement). * Homeowner usability ? this is a big one. They work to maximize the homeowner?s use of the space. For us, this meant keeping as much space as possible available/usable in the attic and maintaining easy access to our washer/dryer and other basement equipment. I was worried I would have to remove shrubs outside, but Tony trimmed them back perfectly. I joined Angie's list to source a contractor for this work and I was a little nervous about not having the recommendation come from a neighbor or relative. I am glad I got over that fear and called ECC. I highly recommend ECC. I will attempt to update my post once I have more experience using the A/C system -- so far, so good!
Description of Work: Installed two air conditioning systems in our circa 1915 home. Previously, we had no A/C at all and no duct work in our home since our heat is hot-water radiator-based. One A/C system supports the 1st floor and another supports the 2nd floor. Both are Lennnox Merit Series 14ACX.

UPDATE: Since I first posted this review, East Coast got back to me and explained that their main office person had been out on vacation, and that a number of other factors had compounded (including an uncooperative supplier) to create the issue. I ended up having another company do the repair because they were able to get the work done first, but I wanted to acknowledge ECC's efforts to make it right. Due to the difficulties, ECC volunteered to refund my initial diagnosis fee, which I appreciate. ---- Three weeks ago I scheduled East Coast Comfort to come and diagnose my broken central A/C. The technician arrived on time and concluded that the compressor was broken. He was reasonably efficient, though his professionalism was somewhat lacking. (Mumbled when he spoke and didn't look me in the eye.) He told me that since the unit was only 1.5 years old it would almost certainly be under warranty, and his office would call me in a few days to schedule a time to install the new compressor. Well, a week went by without hearing anything back from ECC. I eventually called them, and the lady whom answered said that, "Oh, since the unit wasn't registered, it only had a year warranty, and that's past now." It was a raw deal, but I knew it wasn't ECC's fault (though I wished they would have told me that earlier). She suggested that I call the manufacturer (Trane) to see if they could do anything since the unit had never even been in operation for a full season. Following ECC's advice, I went ahead and called Trane. This is where things get interesting. Turns out that the unit actually was still under warranty, as it has a five year warranty even if not registered. I email ECC this news, and I'm told that, "Well, our person is still saying it's not under warranty, so you'll need to get Trane to send us proof of warranty by mail." At this point I'm pretty annoyed, as ECC could just as easily have called Trane themselves and heard the same thing I was hearing. I then tried several times to call ECC back to get clarification about who this "person" was who wouldn't believe it was under warranty so that I could get Trane to contact him, but I was never able to get an answer.* Eventually I found the original paperwork for the unit, and saw where it indeed said a five year warranty if unregistered (ten years if registered). What do you know? The manufacturer actually knows their own policies. Anyway, I emailed a scan of this warranty to ECC this past Monday with a request to schedule an installation visit. What's come of that? Complete unresponsiveness from ECC. No voicemails, no emails, and a number that would seem to be permanently hooked to voicemail regardless of the time of day. At this point, I'm ready to throw away my $75 diagnosis fee and start over with a company that actually gives a rip about service. I'm glad to hear that others have had good experiences with ECC, but it would seem that if your case presents any trouble, they'll just drop you. Hope you enjoy your 102 degree days with no A/C.

These guys are excellent. We have a Mr. Slim AC unit (ductless AC system) that was low on refrigerant and called several companies in our area to see if they would recharge it. Every company we called said they wouldn't work on the system, until I called East Coast Comfort. When I called the woman that answered the phone was extremely professional and I explained our situation to her. She said that she would try to get a tech out there that day for us and would call me back. 10 minutes later I received a call back saying they would be able to have someone out there in less than 4 hours after they did some rearranging of the schedule. When the technician arrived he was extremely courteous and professional. He tested the system and confirmed that it was low on refrigerant. He then added the necessary refrigerant and checked the system again to be certain that it worked. East Coast Comfort will now be our one and only HVAC company. They are excellent!

Thank you East Coast Comfort for a great job. We needed a brand new heating and ac unit along with all new ductwork in our apartment renovation. ?We had about 7 different contractors come out and look at the job and decided on ECC. ?Tony?s estimate wasn?t the cheapest but it did give us the best quality product for the best price. Tony was extremely knowledgeable in helping select our units and Mary was a delight to work with in the office, as I called often with questions. The first day Tony and his crew arrived on time and did a walkthrough of the job with me.?At the end of the second day he did another walkthrough explaining everything he had installed. ?Tony even added an extra vent into our closet that wasn?t in the original estimate for no additional charge. ?Honestly, I couldn?t say enough good things about my experience with ECC. I look forward to using them again in the future when we start work on the downstairs unit.

We purchased a house built in 1910 and planned on doing major renovations to it. The boiler feeding the radiators was at least 25 years old and the water heater was 13 years old and there was no A/C. After doing extensive research, we called two HVAC companies here on Angie?s list. The other company had very high ratings and presented a very professional package as well as East Coast. Their price was considerably higher than East Coast Comforts without providing any additional value added services. East Coast is a local company with ties to the local community, so that made the decision even easier. Our initial contact was made with East Coast and one of their service techs was in the area so he stopped by discussing options for a boiler and water heater. Tony became involved with the estimate and we have several discussions about which boiler would best suit our needs. We decided on a 96% efficient model with an indirect water heater. Tony looked over the layout of our row house, performed the heat calculations and recommended a boiler and indirect water heater that would suit us. He also indicated that they have had very good success with installing ductless A/C systems. This meant we didn?t have to find vertical space through the house for the traditional supply and return ducting. The condenser has a smaller footprint, making it easier to locate in the back/side patio. It is very quiet compared with other units I have seen and heard. We can be enjoying dinner on the back patio without having to raise our voices to be heard over the condensers noise. I spoke with Tony on many occasions about placement of the components and the installation methods that East Coast would employ. Tony assured me that they stand behind their work and that customer satisfaction is their paramount goal. I have over 20 years in the construction business and these guys are the real deal!! They don?t try to blow smoke. They tell it like it is. They will tell you if something will or will not work. They don?t try to sell you things that you don?t need at all. We used the Keystone Help loan program to fund most of the cost of the new boiler and HVAC. With rates at .99%, it was an easy choice. While the state program has many pitfalls, Tony and Mary made the process as painless as possible. In the end, the loan came through, even though I had to call Keystone Help to expedite payment to East Coast for a somewhat unique situation. Installation of the HVAC, boiler and indirect water heater went smooth. The down time without hot water was kept to a minimum. The work areas were always clean. We absolutely love the ductless A/C. It is very quiet, has a very good SEER rating and provides great cooling through the three units that were installed in our house. A couple of issues related to the boiler that had nothing to do with the installation cropped up in the first few weeks. Both times, the service tech came out promptly and performed the necessary repairs. Even when parts were needed from the factory, Tony was diligent in communicating not only with me, but with the factory people to expedite the parts needed and keep the down time to a minimum. Tony, Ed and the rest of the guys at East Coast have all been very professional, courteous and hard working. I will use East Coast again and would recommend them highly.

One year ago I received an estimate from another, highly rated HVAC company on Angie's List, but was turned off by a hard-sell approach and a very high estimate. ECC's estimate was considerably lower, their recommended system was perfectly suited to the size of my Center City house, and did a great job of installing a high efficiency gas furnace, which required special venting. Have already enjoyed the smooth functioning of the AC and look forward to the same from the heating system come fall/winter. Professional, courteous, honest and pleasant folks at ECC. I recommend them most highly!
Description of Work: Replaced entire HVAC system with Lennox gas fired furnace and air conditioner outdoor unit, and a new digital thermostat.

We obtained 6 estimates. ECC had the best price with a couple different options to choose from. At the estimate, I didn't feel like they tried to push anything on us or sway us in any way, like some of the other companies did. They answered all of our, many, questions and were very knowlegable. On the day of installation they were punctual, curtious and friendly while also being extremely professional. They did a terrific job! we are extremely satisfied with the work they did and the quality of the units they installed. We highly recommend East Coast Comfort!
Description of Work: We had our entire heating and AC system replaced.
