We have a stone home built in 2000 with a large and somewhat complex cedar roof -- a very large roof area, with lots of hips and gables. The original cedar roof was only about 14 years old, but the builder used low-grade 5/8" hand-split shakes with the longest possible reveal to save money, and, these shingles were fastened to lath using chinese-made nails which were found to be defective. As a result, the shingles were warping, splitting, becoming very brittle, and starting to blow off because the nails were disintegrating ... so the original cedar roof, which should have lasted 25-30+ years, needed replacement long before it should have. And, every other home in our neighborhood had the exact same problem.
We called several cedar roof contractors and got 4 bids for the work on our house. CedarTek's price was not the lowest, nor was it the highest. But Steve had the longest list of customer references -- and of the contractors we interviewed, Steve seemed like the nicest, easiest, and most conscientious guy to work with. He inspired complete confidence in his professional expertise and qualifications and, of equal or even greater importance to us, a real personal commitment to do the work correctly and conscientiously. We also had a high comfort level that we'd be able to communicate clearly and effectively with Steve during the project, and that he is an honest, trustworthy guy who takes a great deal of pride in his work, and really cares about his customers.
Our project took about 7 weeks or so, beginning in early December and concluding in mid-January. Fortunately, we were fortunately able to live elsewhere during the project, so Steve kept us closely advised on the flow of work by emailing, calling, and sending photos to us at regular intervals ... we were able to follow along from a distance with no problem at all.
Once the work started, the progress was totally smooth, consistent day-to-day, and completely free of unexpected problems. Steve and his guys did exactly what they said they would do, exactly when they said they would do it, and there were no issues or problems whatsoever. Everything about the work -- from the delivery date for materials to the final cleanup was on-time and done on the day it was promised (except, obviously where weather caused a delay -- as it turned out, the weather during our project was unusually cold and bitter, but the only days these guys didn't work was when it was raining or snowing all day).
The new roof looks excellent and has a 55-year transferrable warranty (on Steve's recommendation we decided to use a much heavier and more durable shingle : 7/8" tapersawn premium-grade, fastened with stainless-steel nails -- so now there's no chance we'll be replacing the roof in 20 or 30 or 40 years, which is great!)
We're extremely happy that we chose Steve and his CedarTek crew, and he has our highest possible recommendation ... these are great guys ; thoroughly experienced and well-qualified ; completely honest and conscientious and attentive to detail ; a fair price ; work of the absolute highest quality ; great communication ... Steve and his guys care a lot about what they do and how they treat people along the way, and it shows. A great experience working with these guys!
Phenomenal! We sought five bids that ranged from $30K to over $90K. Steve's was not the lowest, but we were impressed with him personally and later even more impressed by his crew and the work they performed. The men were punctual, very polite and professional, and they cleaned up every afternoon. Our home is three stories off the ground in the back and two elsewhere with steep slopes on two sides. The crew used tarps to contain the removed materials and picked up scraps every day. The new roof is lovely and it has cut down our heating and cooling costs. We found only a couple of scraps and one or two nails after they left.
I am writing this review in 2014 as we have just called Steve again to replace our gutters. I also recommended him last year to replace the roof on a colonial-era barn.
My best advise on roof replacement - get several bids!!!
We looked at several roofing contractors and Cedartek seemed to have the best references when we called them. The written estimate was complete and outlined every possible cost and Steve was always available and on the job. We spent over $30,000.00 for a new cedar roof which is not cheap and every day that i look up i couldn't be happier that we chose Cedartek.
