He made changes to my plans without consulting me. He charged unauthorized charges to my Amex.
Response from KJ Construction

"We are truly sorry that this situation has occurred for all parties involved, and we are currently working towards a resolution. Please refer to the many other positive reviews we’ve received from happy Angie’s List customers to get an honest feel for our character and work ethic. We are proud to be an Angie’s List Super Service Award contractor."

I purchased an Angie's List Deal for a week of contracting work with KJ Construction for a basement project. Kurt provided 5 days of labor and I provided the materials.
Kurt did most of the painting with the dense water-tite paint, which was a huge job, and I helped as much as I could. Then he installed  drywall along a wall that separated the main basement from the utility area, fitted doors in this wall to provide access, and even designed and created a small closet to hide the gas meter. The studs and some drywall were in place, but Kurt  measured, fitted, patched, and sanded the new drywall so that it looks like one smooth wall ready for priming and painting.
Kurt even squeezed in a repair to a kitchen drawer that hadn't closed properly for a long time.
Kurt worked diligently and did a great job.

He came out and I showed him the taking out of an A/C going out of the house. He quoted me an additional $700 to fill the hole up but we're waiting until the weather turns warmer. He's very nice and he said he'd honor the price no matter when he came.

I am not able to review Kurt yet since he hasn't started the job yet.  He has been to my home twice to review the necessary work, but between the weather and my picking paint colors he hasn't started the job yet.  He has given me very good suggestions concerning the work and other options to make our house look great again.  I am looking forward to working with Kurt!

All windows were replaced with double hung vinyl replacement windows, except one which KJ Construction had replaced a year prior. Two large, inefficient windows were replaced with two windows hung side by side. That idea was suggested by the contractor since it would be much more cost effective than ordering custom sized windows, so it saved us a lot of money. We also had several narrow side by side double hung aluminum windows throughout our upstairs that were replaced with single, large double hung windows that were still standard stock size. This was also suggested by the contractor and cut the cost of replacing those upstairs windows almost in half, and reduced labor cost on the job. The contractor didn't have to make these cost-cutting suggestions, but it showed to us that he clearly has the best interest of his customers at the heart of what he does.
The work was all completed within a week, including caulking everything and interior trim replacement where needed. We had problems with leaking prior to having the windows replaced, but since the the new windows are in, insulated and caulked we've not had any problems with water finding it's way inside. Kurt was courteous and pleasant to have around, and was very conscientious of heat loss and dust and debris by taking the time to hang plastic barriers around each window area before he performed the work. This cut down on a lot of interior mess. When he was done he took the time to clean up, and even vacuumed the areas where he had been working.
When he was here working he was extremely industrious, not taking any breaks nor taking a lunch break. Several days he worked almost until dark in order to stay on schedule. We love our new windows, both how they look and how efficient they are, and will definitely have KJ Construction back when we have work to be done in the future.

Overall, the stairs, tub and paint job are very nice. Hopefully you have a lot of time and money, because Kurt is very slow. 3 days for the tub and over 8 hours just to paint a ceiling. Actually half of the ceiling. Very surprised how long it takes Kurt, especially since he is not lazy.
Response from KJ Construction

"The Amount of time it took to to do the tub and paint was not at all excessive. The Tub was a remodel which consisted of: 1) Removing the existing tub/surround and disposing. 2) Prepping the walls to accept the new tub. 3) Reinforcing the sub floor, 4) Re plumbing the waste and supply, both of which were not accessible once the new tub was installed. 5) installing the new tub and surround. 6) installing the finish plumbing. 7) clean up. Also worth mentioning, is the fact that the bathroom was on the second floor and all cutting and most of the preparation was done outside the first floor. The ceiling was a 2 story foyer that required scaffolding and included caulking in the crown moulding against the ceiling and wall, and touching up the moulding/ walls where the previous painter slopped them up. Sufficient drying time for caulk and different colored paint was needed, as well as time climbing and moving scaffold. I am meticulous in my work and care of my tools, and work the same whether I am working with a contract or Time and material basis. I cannot be liable for time tables not discussed ahead of time."

The quality of the work was excellent and Kurt was a pleasure to work with. He first installed shut off valves to the new tub area so the water could be turned back on in the house. This was a simply great idea. He then demolished the old tub and surround. After preparing the area for the new unit he started installation. He found some hairline cracks in the new surround and after a discussion I asked him to suspend work until a new pane could be shipped in.  Kurt was great to work with because he accepted my decision and we agreed that I would call as soon as the new panel arrived. The panel took 6 weeks to arrived and Kurt and I agreed on a new work schedule. Weather did push the date back a little but I had no problem with that. I have worked with a number of contractors in the last 4 yrs and KJ Construction, Kurt, has been one of the best, He told me what he expected to get done each day and kept to that schedule. He worked hard and always communicated with me about what was being done. Any problems he gave me a list of options and we decided what was the best solution together. The quality and care of his work and cleanup each day was great.

His work is very good. We ran into a snag. He used the formula to order the upright for the railing going in front. The formula left him somewhat short. I think it was a good price. He got so many responses from the big deal, so he didn't get to start the project when it would've been timely to do it. We talked about that and he said he learned something from that. Sometimes you need to turn work down. It took sort of long to get it finished because of the balusters being help up and the weather. I'm very patient but after awhile it gets annoying. The work was excellent. It's the timing issue he needs to work on. He was very good about calling me and keeping me apprised of what was going on.

He did a great job ,he also completed basement stairs that needed some joint compound....My only issue is that I needed to do the sanding once the compound dried .He then told me that there would be an additional charge to return for small sanding .This should have been made clear in the special and prior to agreeing to have the job done,no matter how small the and sanding was we were not great at it , and he did such great job with is composing .

I had purchased french doors and he had installed them for me.  I had purchased a bedroom that had cracked and he hung the door.  It went great.  I am extremely happy to have the office doors installed.  He was clean and he brought his own tools and I plan on having come out again. He called to confirm the appointment a week before the appointment date.

It went very well. The contractor came out to see what the job entailed. He put us on his schedule right away. We explained that we needed to clean out the garage and we would call. The contractor was very patient and when we did call he arranged to come the following Saturday. He was on time and did a very good job. It took more time than the coupon stated but he had warned us and told us his rate for additional hours when he came to look at the job.He worked hard and did  not take any breaks. All in all we were very satisfied with the entire experience.

They did no work. I signed up for a big deal special. Called the company to ask about a time to do the work. Said they would call me the following week. That was over 3 weeks ago. Never heard from them.
Response from KJ Construction

"There was a misunderstanding. Contractor was under the impression that the customer was going to call when they solidified the job to be done. Contractor received no warning or check up call before the review."

Work was delayed for a week due to weather. Kurt was easy to work with, professional, and worked all the time he was here.
We are in the process of relocating and Kurt  fit us in so we could make our time line.

It went very well and turned out beautifully. Kurt made suggestions on what materials to use to paint it so the finished ceiling would look great. And it does.

We had a small exterior siding repair.  Kurt was aware of what needed to be done.  He was professional, timely, organized and complete.  I would definitely call him again and I would also use him for a larger job.

Kurt, from General Construction & Home Remodeling was very friendly and helpful in coming up with potential remedies.  He gave us the price for our top two options.  He was prompt, clean and made our garage door look like new.,

He was nice and polite when he came to do the estimate.  But the estimate was outrageous.
Response from KJ Construction

"I had to rearrange my schedule to do both the estimate, and the work as per the customer’s request since they had a very tight window of time to get it done. I submitted a fair estimate that was based on an hourly rate far less than the coupon’s worth. When it was rejected by e mail, I responded with several ways we could adjust the work to better fit their budget, but there was no response."

Overall the things went great. We had KJ Construction working on the house over the course of two months doing a full interior paint job (including a LOT of patching and sanding), and huge kitchen remodel/expansion project. We've have had him back here and there for new projects, or for ongoing projects, as we've had the finances available. He was fantastic to work with. The project started with a very thorough, free estimate, he showed up when he said he would, worked long hours when necessary to make a deadline, was sensitive to the fact that we were living in a construction zone for a few months, and was very polite and extremely personable.
The project started with the ceiling re-do's and the interior painting. I can't say enough about the quality of his patching and painting...he was meticulous about the trim and the walls and everything looked dynamite when he was finished. We then had him move onto the kitchen project, and then did a few things here and there like a window replacement and some ceiling fan additions throughout the house.
I really liked the fact that he was willing to work with my vision for the house, and also added some extremely good options/suggestions, many of which we then factored into the projects. He is very experienced and knowledgeable and is capable of bringing a lot to the planning process of a project. We've now lived in the house for several months and I can honestly say that I'm just as pleased with his work now as I was when he was finished. We're planning on having him back to do additional window replacements this spring/summer, and also to do kitchen floor replacement and possibly some new storm doors this year.
Another thing we really appreciated was that he was sensitive to our budget. He was extremely willing to work with us to make things happen as we had the finance availability to do them, including doing some of the projects in segments. Working with someone who was so flexible in this area was a huge plus for us.
