"[removed member name] had a handy man move the old fixtures several years after the work was done. He installed wainscot paneling and reset the toilet and over tighten the supply hose to the toilet fill valve. He actually use a pipe wrench on a hand tight nut. The leak happened several years after the job was done. When it comes to water pressure the fitting would have leaked within seconds of putting the water back on. Our bathroom work was completed in 2009 ."
Phil provided a quick overview of how to regen and bypass the unit - pretty simple stuff. He also explained that the brine tank should have very little water in it - and that I shouldn't really see the water as the salt rests on top.
I was still seeing spots on dishwasher items - so decided to take a look at the unit a few weeks ago. The brine tank was almost full of water - approaching the overflow valve (which I was told was not necessary to install since and quot;the water never gets that highand quot;). I email Phil of the issue and do some reading of the manual.
I follow the instructions Phil provided during the install - and place the unit in bypass. Also through some internet searches I determine that the brine tank is clogged and swirl with a clean broom handle to dislodge the clog.
The water level begins to lower over the course of the regen cycle.
The next morning I run another regen and head out to the store. When I arrive home - there is water all over the basement. I find that the drain hose which was installed with TIE WRAPS above the ceiling into a new trap - had come loose and sprayed water all over the new walls, ceiling, and floors. It was quite obvious what happened as the hose was just resting on top of the drain trap which Phil installed.
I call Phil immediately - and despite being extremely frustrated, I remained calm and Phil (to his defense) had his brother and another employee over to take a look within a few hours. Pretty impressive responsiveness...
Phil's brother and his coworker cleaned up the water with my shop vac and found that the connections between the resin tank and brine tank were loose (he admitted it was not installed tightly). Consequently water was being forced into the brine tank, but not being siphoned back out due to the air being pulled in versus brine. He tightened the fittings and ran a regen to test it out.
His brother also reinstalls the drain hose securely and properly through a new fitting as opposed to tie wraps.
I was told to and quot;call Phil he will have his adjuster come over and he will cover the cleanup/repair expensesand quot; -
When the guys leave - I find my shop vac filter was ruined ($20) since they did not remove it before using it on water; freshly painted walls were stained from water and salt; and ceiling tiles were damaged.
I call Phill the next day and he immediately accuses me of creating the problem and that and quot;...you (I) must have pulled out the drain hose...and quot; - and and quot;...you (I) offered the shop vac to my brother and he did not ruin the filter...and quot;
I was really surprised but we continued to discuss despite his continued attempts to pass the blame. About five minutes into the call - Phil tells me and quot;...why don't you just sue me (him)...and quot; and and quot;...my (his) wife is a lawyer so go ahead and sue me...and quot; I was SHOCKED! He also tells me it's not worth for his adjuster to visit.
I proceed to explain to Phil that it is $100 or so for repair and repaint (which was really low) - and he finally tells me he will send me a check for $100.
A week or so passes and I email Phil -

Hi Phil:
Please let me know if/when you are going to send that check we discussed? My wife has been asking and I would rather not have her on my case about this much longer. Thanks – I appreciate your responsiveness in addressing the installation problem; but was quite offended that you accused me of causing the leak. A bit surprised to say the least –If ou are not going to send – that is fine as well, but please let me know either way.

Phil's response:

Jason you soon forget we did a bunch of extra work to install the water softner and did not charge you any extra . We fix the pipes in the closet and flushed out your water tank. I think we should be even. Then you accused my guys of ruining your filter when you offered it to them to suck up the water. You should have put the unit on bypass until we got there but you kept trying to regen the system which is not good for the pistons and orings. We came back and stand behind are products.

So I spend $1,700 for a water softener install, freshly remodeled basement is flooded due to admitted installation issue, Phil tells me to sue him, then offers me $100 - and now renegs on his offer and again accuses me of neglect.
BE AWARE OF THIS! I am posting this to advise others of Phil's insensitive business practices, ethics, and overall integrity.
I will be filing a civill suit on principle - it's not about $100 any more; it's about a business failing to live up to their promises and fix damages caused by their installation.
When they came, they diagnosed the problem as a leaky pipe and broken fixture. They carefully explained that the problem was due to cheap parts used on the previous installation by the previous homeowner. It was a challenging job given the tight space, but they did good work and used quality parts.
