It was a great experience -- they were truly honest -- did exactly what they were contracted to do and did a great job -- quality workmanship and fair dealing -- We would definitely use them again!

I asked Carney to come out and clean my heater.  The technician started to tell me that my 1 heater (I have dual zone) was leaking carbon monoxide and would need to be replaced. He even showed me a meter which had a minimal CO reading blip.  He told me that if the reading was a little higher, he would have to shut my unit down for safety.

They had a deal going on and could replace both units for approx. $15,000.  He said I might as well replace both units while I'm replacing 1 of the units.  I didn't believe him and went with another company.

Guess what?  The other company cleaned both my heaters and told me there were no leaks at all.  I then read that this is a scam to get them to pay for replacing both units.  I was obviously not happy with Carney.

We compared quotes from 3 different companies for almost the same system (Trane).
Carney had in the end the most competitive offer after a "winter rebate" came up.
The offer included 10yrs warranty on parts and labor.
The workers came in time and the job was done within one day.
The area was kept clean and the work looks very professional.

Bergey Heating and Cooling, provides and maintains 3-wireless whole house hot water heaters. Carney only uses gas whole house hot water heaters.
Response from Carney Plumbing Heating & Cooling

"An overall Grade of "C" ? Really? This grade was disappointing to say the least. Was this a plug for Bergey Heating and Cooling? The member contacted our office for the purpose of an estimate to replace her 7 year old tankless water heater and was scheduled for a FREE ESTIMATE on March 5, 2014 between 9.00 AM and 12.00 Noon. Our technician arrived at the member's home @ 10.02 AM on the 5th as promised. A diagnosis was made, discovering that the water heater in question did not in fact need to be replaced, but did need some internal electrical repairs (beyond our normal scope) and we recommended a very good electrician to the member. We also offered the option of a Heat Pump/Electric Water Heater, should she wish to replace it anyway, but at this point the member declined any pricing on the product, and no pricing was discussed. There was no fee for our visit to her home and obviously no money changed hands. We approached the service call in a professional manner and didn't try to sell the member something she didn't need In other words we put honesty before everything else. I see no reason why we didn't receive a Grade of "A" in every category and quite frankly think this review should be stricken from the record. And by the way, Carney offers much more than just gas whole house water heaters. We have a full line water heating products to suit virtually every need. A "C"?.......really unfair."

It began with a repair man coming out on Tuesday afternoon to examine why we did not have heat.  The cost of him entering my home was $85.00.  The diagnosis was a blower motor replacement.  He stated it could take up to five days to get the part from a local supplier.  Due to my wife's health issues we asked if the job could be done sooner because the supplier was local.  We were told we would have to pay $150.00 to have the part shipped overnight to Carney.  Then we were told if we paid an additional $175.00 we could get the part cheaper under a service contract.  Because of the $150.00 fee to get a local part I found that questionable.  Now that the only way to get heat was to pay $150.00 for overnight service with no guarantee of the repair being done the next day we were in a bind.  We had no choice because of the severe cold weather than to pay the overnight charge of $150.00 therefore we could not afford the service contract and had to pay a higher price for the motor.  I was told I would get a call when the part came in to schedule the work.  Ironically, I was called a few hours after I paid the $150.00 to schedule the appointment.  How did they know when the part would arrive?  Seems to me the goal was to get the $150.00 fee.  I was called at 7am the next morning to schedule the work.  It literally took 15 minutes to replace the part and within 20 minutes the technician was out of my house.  He sat outside in his truck for some time and then left.  Shortly thereafter i found the directions for installing the part on my heater.  After paying almost $700.00 for a part that took 15 minutes to install I decided to read the directions and found the ending steps were not done of he installation.  The heater was never turned on and off to see if it would fire back up, so i had to do these steps by myself.  I did call and report it to Carney, their response was that the tech knew what he was doing even though he didn't complete the installation per the directions.  I am thankful my heater is working but I do feel that this was a money game!
Response from Carney Plumbing Heating & Cooling

"Unfortunately, I find quite a bit of the member's comments to be half truths. Although the supplier whom we purchase our products from is local, the inducer motor required was not in stock nor in his inventory and to order it through normal channels it would be 5 days before we received it. They did offer to call the manufacturer and have it shipped guaranteed overnight for a fee of $150.00 (exactly our cost). [member name removed] was quoted $434.07 for both labor and material to replace the motor when in was available in 5 days or an option of the additional $150.00 should she want it completed the next day. [member name removed] declined both options at that time, hence our technician collected $85.00 for his time to diagnose the unit failure on Jan 13, 2014. On that day our technician was dispatched @ 4.17 PM, arrived at the home at 4.36 PM and completed his diagnosis and explanation of options, and departed her driveway at 5.30 PM. On Jan. 14, 2014 [member name removed] contacted our office at 10.32 AM and requested that we move forward with the overnight shipping, which we did. That same day we left a message with [member name removed]'s voice mail letting her know we were tracking the motor and would have it in our possession on Jan. 15. On Jan. 15, 2014 [member name removed] returned our call to confirm her availability for that day. At 11.26 AM a technician was dispatched with motor in hand and arrived on site at 11.51 AM. and completed the repair, checked the system and departed her driveway at 12.50 PM. Any talk of him sitting in his truck for 20 minutes, with temperatures in the low teens is grossly misrepresented, as our GPS system reports location, speed of travel, direction of travel and when the engine is running. The member is free to come into our office anytime and review the records for that vehicle any time to confirm what has been stated by me. So overall we have invested 2 hours and 33 minutes in the repair, far more than the member has given us credit for. The $175.00 (actually #179) was for an annual maintenance agreement that we offer to all of our clients in an effort to prevent future breakdowns such as this and is strictly an option and was declined. Our technician has nearly 10 years experience in repairs such as the one performed and has read the instructions so many times he could probably recite them word for word. He had turned the unit on and off via the emergency switch mounted right on the unit. Even though she didn't see him turn the switch on and off she felt he should do it one more time. We offered to return, free of charge to do so again but she declined. She was also asked if there was anything we could do to make her happy, to which she stated she would be happy if we charged less, not charge for overnight shipping, and not ask for a deposit when ordering a special part. Should the member wish to discuss this further, I can be reached at 215-822-9029. Sincerely, Kevin J. Carney President"

Well, we lost our Air Handler on Thanksgiving.  Lousy situation and we decided to bite the bullet and buy a whole new system, heat pump and air handler. Carney did a great job from top to bottom.  The price tag still stings, but that has nothing to do with Carney.  The work was great and they took great care not to impact our home.  You know the drill, booties, punctuality, professionalism...  We even enjoyed quite a few laughs on installation day.  Our hats off to all involved, Steve, Nichole, Keith, Kevin, Vinnie, and John. Thank you!

Response from Carney Plumbing Heating & Cooling

"We are never happy when there is a failure to satisfy a client's expectation. At the same time, we expect a member, who is dissatisfied with our service be forthright in the facts of a complaint and provide us with an opportunity to rectify his/her concerns. We have attempted to reach the member on 4 different occasions since his review was posted on this site, leaving a message on his voice mail each time, with no response as of this writing. Concerning the job itself, and speaking with the technician assigned to service call, the member isn't even close in his presentation of the complaint. All of our trucks are fully equipped with GPS technology, so that we know precisely where they are at any given moment. In this particular case, our technician was dispatched on October 18th at 1:51 PM, arrived at the member's home at 2:09 PM and left his home at 4:03 PM. That is a total of 2 hrs and 12 min. invested in the task, not 45 minutes as the member falsely claims. The faucet itself was very old and it was recommended that he consider replacing the entire unit, which he rejected. A firm and guaranteed price was provided to a) repair and rebuild the entire faucet provided there were no further defects. or b) replace the faucet entirely complete with new water supply tubes, shut off valves and connectors. The member chose to make the repair rather than replacement. The member states there was a leak the next morning which was a Saturday. We have technicians on call 24 hours, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. All the member needed to do was pick up the telephone, call us and we would have had someone at his home within an hour at no charge, to investigate the problem. In closing, we have done everything possible to rectify a problematic situation, but any solution requires participation by 2 parties. It is one thing to have a legitimate complaint but entirely another to throw out false statements here on Angies List and then just walk away. Should the member change his mind, my son Ryan or I can be reached at 215-822-9029. Kevin J. Carney President"

The first sales person seemed professional and knowledgeable but after waiting for a quote for a few weeks while this guy kept telling me it was on its way, he left the company.  Things happen so I let that slide.  The next sales guy that came out also seemed knowledgable and professional.  The price quote I ended up getting from Carney was 40% higher than the next closest estimate.  This was after I was assured by the Carney person that assigned the second saleperson that their prices are very competitive for geothermal work.  Even if their work and materials would have been better, which is doubtful, there is no way it would have been worth paying their high price.  I would not recommend calling this comany for goethermal work.
Response from Carney Plumbing Heating & Cooling

"We apologize to the member for any inconvenience regarding the delay in our proposal due to the original sales person no longer being employed with our company. This was an unforeseen event and we realize that this had an unfortunate impact on our ability to complete the proposal in a timely fashion. Regarding the proposal itself, yes – it did include the highest quality equipment and materials available in the residential geothermal market as well as the best warranties and guarantees available. We found the existing duct system to be below industry standards in terms of both design and construction. Without replacing and renovating most of the duct system as well as adding a significant amount of additional duct, the proposed geothermal system would not operate within the manufacturer’s specifications and industry standards in terms of both capacity and efficiency. Therefore, our proposal included replacing and renovating most of the duct system including the removal and replacement of materials that pose serious health concerns to inhabitants of the home as well as significantly reduce system performance according to numerous independent studies, including this one by the University of California at Santa Barbara: ehs.ucsb.edu/units/ih/ihrsc/ihpdf/ihductliner.pdf I can only guess that maybe the member is mistaken in his analysis of the 2 proposals. To provide an estimate for this scope of work at an amount that was 40% less than the provided proposal would simply be impossible as the direct costs would far exceed this amount. We do not believe that the proposals being discussed are “apples to apples” and that ours included a far more comprehensive system design and installation. We also believe that anything less than such a design and installation would not have allowed the geothermal system to perform at it's peak, as intended. In retrospect, we probably should have politely declined to bid on the project. Thank you, Kevin Carney"

Called on Sunday to report problem with duct work in crawl space.  On-call technician did not have required parts but said he would have the office call me first thing on Monday.  I received a call Monday morning at approximately 7:40 a.m.....follow-up is impressive.  They said they would try to have a tech out in the morning, which they did.  Additionally, they called ahead when the tech was on his way to my house, so I knew when to expect his arrival.  He immediately identified the necessary repair and provided a cost estimate for my review.  As soon as I approved the repair, he called for the parts and went to work removing the damaged piece.  The replacement arrived a short time later via a second driver.  The tech immediately proceeded with the repair and was finished sooner that I expected.  Price was firm....no additional charges.  I was extremely pleased and would definitely recommend this company.

We smelled natural gas in our house so we called PECO.  They came out and found 2 fittings that were leaking.  They shut off the gas at the meter but were nice enough to not lock it.  We called around for a plumber and the one good thing about Carney was that they were available and came out within a few hours.  The job to be done was simply to replace or tighten 2 pipe fittings.  The plumber who Carney assigned to the job took a look at it and quoted me $440 to fix it, claiming that was their flat rate for fixing a gas line and that all plumbers would charge that even though it was not an emergency call.  That was a total lie obviously, because I had talked to another plumber that would have charged less than $200 to do the work, but was just unavailable.  I objected and he lowered it to $400 with a "coupon".  Sadly we were at their mercy because we are moving in a few days and had to get this fixed before settlement and the other plumbers I had called were unavailable.  The work took them about 20 minutes, during which they knocked a spare halogen flood lightbulb I had on a shelf to the floor breaking it.  They cleaned it up but never told me that it happened.  Highly unprofessional.  I only knew because I overheard it happen, and I had one less bulb on the shelf.  They did not do a pressure test, but turned the gas back on, took my money and left.  Within a short period of time, the gas smell returned.  PECO was called out a second time, and they found a leak in one of the fittings the Carney plumber had installed!  This time they shut off the gas and locked it at the meter (so no hot water and no stove).  I called Carney and the earliest they would schedule someone to come out and fix the problem was the following morning at 9.  But of course, the plumber called that morning and said they would have to reschedule for around noon.  Finally, a new plumber from Carney arrived and replaced all of the pipe and fittings that the first guy had replaced, and under my supervision performed a pressure test to ensure that there were no leaks this time.
To sum up, Carney charged me more than double what they should have, didn't fix the problem because they were lazy enough to not pressure test their work, broke a lightbulb and didn't tell me, and forced me to wait a day for them to come back and fix their error, despite the fact that they left me with no hot water or oven.

UPDATE:
The owner of the company, Ryan Carney gave me a call a few days after my review was posted.  He was very apologetic and did not make any excuses for the poor service.  He confirmed that they charge more than other plumbers because they offer superior service, but admitted that was obviously not the case for me.  He asked me what they could do to help rectify the situation and ended up refunding me half the cost of the job.  While I would not use them again, the owner seemed to me to honestly care that the service was poor, and I very much appreciate that he did not try to make any excuses.

First and most important is that we had a different plumber out a week or 2 prior to Carney when the pipe clogged the first time.  For the same $400 that plumber did a cleanout and identified a dip in the pipe with a remote camera as the cause of the problem -- but he did not see that the clog was due to a crack in the pipe causing dirt to come into the line, so it did not seam reasonable that just a dip would be enough to cause a clog like that since every trap is just a dip in the line.  And the biggest difference was that he proposed to do the sewer line replacement for more than $6000!  Carney had a better price by thousands.
We did not get the work done by the first plumber, then had the 2nd clog and called Carney.  Then we waited for it to clog again (Carney warned us that that would happen and could not guarantee their cleanout because of it) before finally making the decision to get the work done immediately since the toilets were unusable, so we called Carney to get the job done.
The guys from Carney were all very professional and helpful and kept the house clean where they had to make the connection to the interior line.  They put much more stone down and of a finer grade than was found around the original pipe (possibly the cause of the failure).  They did their best to preserve shrubs and plants that had to come out, cut a minimum of tree branches that were in the way of the backhoe, and cleaned up well afterward.  They had to leave a lot of dirt piled up, but advised that it needs to settle for a year before scraping off the rest to redo the landscaping.
The only thing I was not happy about was having to put 1/2 down before the job was scheduled, and then Carney could not get there for 10 days.  But they did help us out by offering to come and do a free clean out so we could use the plumbing (lightly - no clothes washing) while we waited for the sewer line replacement.  That cleanout was successful and now the line has been replaced and everything works great.  I have a big pile of dirt, but that is to be expected until the settling is done.

Outstanding customer service from all areas of their business:

  • the office staff who scheduled the service calls and handle the billing
  • the salesman who helped us find the right unit that met our financial needs
  • the service technicians doing the inspections
  • the installation technicians

Everyone was incredible, friendly, helpful and always put me the customer in the center of what they were doing.
It's nice to know that when you have someone coming out to do an annual check on your systems they aren't going to try to upsell you something or get you to buy something you don't need.
Everyone I have dealt with at Carney I can say I feel is trustworthy and honest.  And I always felt safe with their service technicians in my home if no one else was home with me.
I would highly recommend them to anyone needing HVAC repair, replacement, general maintanence.

Joe Hill arrived promptly for our appointment, and was extremely knowledgeable regarding the work that would need to be performed. He answered all of my questions, and followed up the next day with a competitive, easy to understand written proposal.  The proposal presented a good - better - best scenario, including the pricing and benefits for each system. When I contacted Joe for additional information, he responded immediately. Overall, an excellent experience.  In the end I went with a competing product - but only because the space that I have  available for the air conditioner is a bit tight and the Trane unit that I was considering was larger than  others.  Had this not been the case, I would have absolutely went with Joe Hill and Carney.  All the research I did made it clear that proper installation is the most critical component of a quality HVAC replacement.  This is the area where I felt Joe Hill's expertise was top notch. Should I ever need to install a new system on a different property, I will most certainly contact Joe Hill and Carney.
