"This job was going smooth until one afternoon the porch post pushed out and fell down. The roof came down on top of me and my co-worker. My first response was to be sure everyone was ok and praise God we were. Then my mind shifted to what I needed to do to fix this. We decided to call my Liability Insurance and schedule an adjuster to come out, which he did the following morning. We discovered the ledger board that was attached to the house that someone else built, was nailed through 1 inch foam board recessed only about 1 inch into the house framing. This was the main reason the insurance company covered the claim. When I shared this info with the homeowner he seemed grateful. It could have fallen on them with a heavy snow. The next day things were not the same. He said we broke his house. If someone broke my old unsafe porch roof and then fixed it for free with some money in my pocket from the insurance, I would ask them to do some work on the other side of my house as well. Below are the numbers from the financial side of the job. I am not sure how I got a C on price when the next closest price was $[Member Information Removed] 000 more. Contract amount $15452.11 Add ons (pvc on porch beam, riser lights) $700 Insurance Claim amount $6329.02 Total $22,481.13 Amount Paid to Inch by Inch Construction $19,787.73 Difference of $2693.40 Either you can say the owner made the difference from the insurance claim ,which is what happened, or maybe you think the contractor who did the work should have made the profit or some of the profit from the claim. In the insurance claim there was about $1300 or so toward residing the back of the house that the homeowner decided not to do because we could not get an exact match. The $1500 mentioned was what I thought was an agreement we had with the insurance money to put towards materials, but he said he did not understand what I meant. Also, I wanted to mention he said he did not think I should profit from the roof falling and asked me to track my labor and materials for the job, which I did. That total was $3635.62. When I was finished with the job I gave him the final bill and a letter to let him know I was sorry for what happened. The bill stated a balance if $21,287.73 minus a $[Member Information Removed],000 deposit, which gave him a profit of $1,193.40. The homeowner advised me if this happens again to apologize every day to the person. I want him to understand that if I say I am sorry, I truly do mean it. I do not know what else I could have done, but apologized sooner. It has always been my goal to work hard to assure each customer is satisfied and we meet or exceed expectations. This was stressful for me as well; no one is above making mistakes. The first thing I want to do after this happens is to make it right and fair for all parties involved. The homeowner mentioned I did not fully appreciate the trauma and stress that my mistakes caused. The reality is what you do for one person is more than enough, and the next person doesn't look at things the same way. A Challenge can be evaluating my customer's personality/expections and satisfying their needs so a the end of the Job we are both happy"
"I would first like to thank Angieslist for giving contractors the opportunity to share their experience as well. I also want to be clear that I feel that Mr. [Member Name Removed] was fair in his review and just want to add my experience to the story... I need to start at the very beginning. We were taking an existing full bathroom, approx 7x12, and making 2 full bathrooms in the same space and adding a door to the master bedroom for a master bath. Mr. [Member Name Removed] did have the original blue prints with the option of the 2 full bathrooms, except when they built their house they moved the interior wall that made the bathroom smaller - suitable for 1 full bath but was very tight to get 2 full baths in the same space. I am not excusing my mis-measurement ,only making it clear to you the reader. In response to the toilet and supply vent in the floor behind the toilet, I did make a mistake and should have moved it closer to the shower. I did offer to buy the toilet that did not fit correctly. We actually ended up install the toilet in their 1st floor 1/2 bath. Which he did pay me for my labor to do so. Mr. [Member Name Removed] found a toilet he was satisfied with upon reading the reviews and was installed in master bathroom. The shower drain was not tight and the shower did leak the first time he used it. I repaired drywall and painted the entire ceiling in the kitchen and dining room at no cost. The shower door unit was a pain in the butt to be honest. The brand name unit was bought at Lowe's. As described by Mr. [Member Name Removed], the unit leaked several times. We tried to caulk the inside of the shower and it still leaked. Mr. [Member Name Removed] wanted another unit installed and he purchased another shower, but I did reimburse him for it. I was willing to pay Lowe's installers to install the new shower unit, which they said their only sub contractor they had to install it had quit. In the end, Lowe's had no one to install the unit, so I had to return to install the unit again. My opinion is that, the installation instructions could have been clearer about the way the shower doors drains and there could have been big bold letters about not caulking the inside of the shower, which was the reason for the leak. The last issue we had was my mistake, as the cabinet ordered was about 1 in. too big. As you can see in the photo, the shower door location is nice because of the tight space. The problem was it was a 2 in. larger size, when I took my original measurement for a 36 in. shower. We ordered another cabinet at no cost and made sure his sink and bathroom were fully functional until the cabinet came in. It only took us about 2 hrs. to install the cabinet. Quick overview: Yes, the project didn't go the smoothest, and i did make some mistakes, but it was a very tight space and in the end we accomplished the request to make a full bath and a 3/4 bath. We painted the ceiling for free and I did give the and Gift card for either $75 or $100 (I forget the exact amount), just to communicate I was sorry for the errors."
"I did explain why, I told him it was to small a job to use the coupon"
