Steelway Cellar Doors

Doors (Interior) - Install or Replace, Brick or Stone Tuck pointing, Brick or Stone Siding: Install or Completely Replace,

About us

Steelway Cellar Doors does not cut corners on anything we do. We manufacture everything we install and we do it all with our own employees and never use subcontractors. This means you can be assured that we do the job right and if you want something unique that we have the ability to do the job. We only do basement entrances - we don't finish basements, do waterproofing or decks or additions. Excavating next to your home and opening up your foundation wall is a big deal that's why we insist on gettting permits so you can be assured that the job is done right. We have specialized equipment to do the job with the minimal amount of interuption to your home - engineered headers, special saws to reduce dust and yard mats to protect your yard. All part of the benefit of using a company that specializes in one thing.

I was given the impression that it would take only 1 day to install the egress and 2 weeks to get the vertical door installed.  The egress system was installed in one day as promised, but had many issues with the entry (vertical door.)  The door had to be ordered because the opening in my basement was not the standard size.  The installer said it would be no longer than 2 to 3 weeks to get the door in and installed. I called Steelway  after 2 weeks and the door still hadn't arrived from the manufacturer.  After three weeks they stated the manufacturer called and the door had arrived.  Unfortunately this was not true.  The door that had arrived was the wrong door.  I was unhappy with the timeframe on the door but this was not Steelways fault.  The only issue I had was with the commnication on the door delay.  I talked with Carter (one of the owners)  and he promised that the communication issues would be further looked into by his team.  My overall experience with Steelway was good.
Response from Steelway Cellar Doors

"The member and I spoke to address his concerns about the delivery of the cut-down vertical door. His situation was unique in that he needed a custom made short vertical door at the bottom of the stairs. Unfortunately when the door arrived it was not made correctly and we simply ordered the door again and did not make the call to the member as we should have. We have customer service training once a month and we make every attempt to exceed customers' expectations in everything we do. Hopefully it is apparent that the installation of the basement stairs was done to the member satisfaction."

They came out and measured everything, and made the cellar doors so they would fit properly.  It was not an easy install, but everything turned out ok.

Because of the very heavy trucks they use, make sure you don't have this work done right after a rain.  We were lucky in the fact that it rained a fair amount the previous Thursday, but Friday afternoon into Saturday, we had strong winds to dry everything fairly well.  We were the second install of the day, and they arrived late because of unforseen issues at the previous job, and because of this they couldn't get to the quarry in time to get the modified stone they use for backfill.  They said they'd be back at 3pm the next day to finish the job, and at exactly 3pm, they honored their word and finished in about an hour.  They did leave extra modified stone because the fill would settle, and we had rain the next day and it did as they said it would.  I've since shoveled most of that pile into the hole.  This is something that will happen...gravity, you know.  We are going to have a concrete slab put in around it to connect the new entrance with the existing patio and a walk out to the shed.

Now, their standard price is $4500, but we got galvanized doors and modified stone fill instead of dirt because we have a high water table and clay soil, but overall, great job and well worth the price.

I had a good experience with Steelway.  I submitted dimensions of the 2 covers via their website, and they sent me a draft sketch with an invitation to discuss.  They were helpful and responsive when I called, and adjusted the dimensions to save some money.  They agreed to perform some extra services, eg, painting the frames white rather than the standard base red color.  There was one slight miscommunication (they originally made just one cover rather than 2) but that could easily have been my fault. The quality of the covers is excellent and the service I received was professional and friendly.  I'd recommend Steelway to anyone seeking custom covers.

They were exceptional. They were neat and did a good job. They cleaned up after themselves. The price was fine. Everything was fine.

Watching Steelway cut a hole in our basement wall and install this egress door was amazing! They completed the entire install in about 4 hours and did a great job. Like the solid concrete steps that will not rot or rust. They were very professional and worked quickly and efficiently.

Started off as a positive experience. Good product, reasonable price point, salesperson arrived timely. It went wierd from there. He raised an installation concern and suggested a workaround. We would not agree to his workaround. He then backed away from his concern and told us everything would be OK. When we challenged his reversal, he got defensive. We were asked if we were ready to commit and we advised that given the concerns raised we would want to discuss the decision further. He abruptly stormed out of our house. We decided to install a window instead of a door, which is the primary reason Steelway did not get the business. If we had decided to install a door, we likely would not have selected Steelway simply because of the salesperson's unprofessional behavior. But it didn't stop there. Approximately 2 months after coming to our home, the salesperson called to determine the status of our job. I advised we opted for the window based upon the concerns he raised. When I was asked if we selected a different contractor for the window, I answered in the affirmative, to which he replied "Alrighty" and hung up. I reached out to Steelway to simply advise of my unusual experience with the salesperson and report the salesperson's behavior was unprofessional and rude. I was told the behavior didn't seem rude at all. Althought this is purely speculation on my part, I suspect I was talking to the salesperson himself. I then added I was going to post the experience on Angie's list. I believe they have a good product, but I wouldn't recommend calling them unless you were absolutely certain you were going with their product.
Response from Steelway Cellar Doors

"We always like feedback such as this report to make sure we are treating everyone professionally. Certainly this does not sound like a good experience and in contrast to our montra of "Prompt, Polite and Professional". We work hard each day to make sure we treat customers, and prospective customers, like we would want to be treated. Hopefully by reading other reviews it is clear we try to satisfy each customer's unique situation. While we may never know what went wrong here, there are usually many sides to a story like this, we do appreciate the feedback and will use it to remind our salesmen that we must always be "Prompt, Polite and Professional"."

I had Steelway create a custom steel fabricated door for our cellar access. To save money I did the installation myself. The salesman was prompt and good to work with. When the door was delivered I was a little disappointed with the workmanship. The doors are provided primed. The priming job was a sloppy, with hardened drips in many locations. Holes for installation were not pre-drilled, even though it was clearly evident that there would be no obstructions at installation. I spoke with the Steelway and they explained, somewhat ridiculously, that the prime coat is typically not done well because you need to sand and provide a finish coat. In addition Steelway offered to come out and drill the holes if it would make me happy. I did not take them up on it, but I was happy that they had given the offer. As an overall experience I rate Steelway as a "B" because of the workmanship and because I felt that it was a little expensive for what they provide. However I am happy with the final product and would likely use Steelway again if I needed a similar service.

Their representative arrived on time for the initial consultation, when he took all the measurements and discussed the options with me. He was very courteous and answered all of my questions. The time between the initial consultation and when the door was made corresponded with the time promised. The installer made quick work of the old door, installed the new door properly, and cleaned up all of his materials.

We have been looking for a reliable contractor for several years and have always run into them at the Phila Home Show. We finally asked for an evaluation. The person who came out to look at our project and provide the estimate was very knowledgeable of problems and how to avoid. Our secret weapon was the presence of my father-in-law who is a building inspector and former homebuilder - but we did not show our hand. We asked questions and then dad asked his - getting more and more pointed/technical/codes and the estimator knew the answers and the problems presented...and in the end - dad told him he was impressed with his knowledge. They came this Thursday at 8:00 am and were finished before 1:30 pm. Yes, Dad came and watched and was very pleased. A bonus was that the owner of the company was our installer. He was very friendly, explained the equipment to our 5-year-old son. Rates a A++
