They were great. They were punctual and nice. Their pricing was affordable and reflected what the job was. He is actually coming back today to look at a tree. They seemed honest. They did a good job and they cleaned up.

Removal of the dying Willow was fine, although one branch came down onto a newly planted Magnolia killing it (for which we were compensated). Trimming of the Silver Maple however was an unmitigated disaster. In 30 years of home ownership I have not seen such incompetence. As stated in the proposal, they were to "Prune the tree in the front yard by removing all deadwood 1" in diameter and greater, any unhealthy/broken branches, crossovers, and excessive sucker growth. Reduce the overall canopy of the tree by approximately 1/3 to 1/2." They topped the tree. If you do not know what topping is imagine trimming your hedges level on the top - that is what they did to this 50 year old tree. I may have misinterpreted "Reduce the overall canopy of the tree by approximately 1/3 to 1/2." however I have yet to meet an arborist that would indiscriminately top a tree. And even if the services rendered were as the arborist had envisioned, that would still not make up for the fact that every branch trimmed was allowed to fall to the ground without any attempt to slow their descent with a rope or come-along. Consequently the front yard looked like it had been carpet bombed. Do NOT use this company for your tree care.

Response from The Davey Tree Expert Co.
This review is difficult to respond to since the work completed is nearly three years old. As the member states, there was an issue with a Magnolia tree that was damaged during the removal of the Willow tree that we compensated the member for by a reduction in the total invoice of the work. None of the other issues that the member brought up in the review were brought to our attention when the work was completed. If they had been addressed at that time, we would have worked with the member to "make it right." We pride ourselves on hiring and training the best possible people to work on our clients' properties. Proper pruning is something that we take very seriously and we avoid "topping" trees at all costs. We are sorry that the member was not satisfied with the work completed, but without knowledge of that fact, it is hard to address the concerns.

I spoke with Rick who is a arborist. I simply asked for 12 or so trees to be pruned. He said emphatically "No, we are ethical contractors and pruning the oak tree wouldn't be ethical." I asked him what the heck he was talking about and he said "he cares too much for the trees to prune them and have them die." I proceeded to tell Him that we had the same trees pruned in the past and they did well. Rick then proceeded to give me a price of 700.00 to remove an oak tree about 40 ft high. I repeated that I ONLY want the trees pruned and not taken out. He then said he could take all 7 trees out for 1500.00????? I repeated once agin that I only wanted them pruned. He insisted that the pruning. Was not something he believed should be done for whatever reason. Wow, this guy was not the most pleasant guy when discussing the project. I somewhat understood his position, but he could have been more professional about it. I am in corporate sales and if I handled sales calls like him, my family would starve!

Response from The Davey Tree Expert Co.
The member met with Rob, not Rick as stated in his review and they discussed the work on the property. The member asked Rob to provide a quote to "top" the trees, but being an ethical tree worker and abiding by the standards of the International Society of Arboriculture, Rob declined. As you can see in this link, http://www.treesaregood.com/treeowner/pruningyourtrees.aspx, the practice of topping trees is something we avoid at all costs. Unfortunately, the member was trying to accomplish something with the trees that simply we would not be able to complete in good conscience.

My arborvitae has a lot of sentimental value, so when I found bag worms in it for the second time I was quite afraid I might lose it. I called Arborel and they had Ken come out to take a look and treat it. He's very kind and very knowledgeable -he thought the story behind my tree that makes it so sentimental to me was very nice. He really cares about saving my tree- as much as I do- and that came across. After looking it over he is sure it will be saved and that was a great relief to me. He gave it a soil drench that will kill the bag worms as they are still active right now. He gave me instructions on keeping the tree watered. This fall he will come back to trim a dead section off and feed it. He said he will also set up a time for next spring to spray the tree when the baby bag worms emerge. I plan on using Arborel to keep this tree growing and healthy.

They scheduled an appointment and gave me a quote within a couple of days. Their crew removed 2 large trees with difficult surroundings One of them was between 2 houses and was over 30 feet tall. The other tree was against the electrical wires near the street. They removed one tree and took away all the waste one day and were unable to do the second one right away because their truck was full and they couldn't handle any more waste because mine was not the first job of the day. They told me the would return and do the second tree on a certain date, and they did just that. Their professionalism throughout was excellent. All was cleaned up well and they were most courteous.

The guys from Arborel came out and gave me a quote on the spot for removal of two tall hemlocks that were covered in kudzu. It was a difficult job because it was right at the corner of my property between a chain link and wooden fence and there was no way to access the yard with a truck, so they had to climb the trees. They came out with a team a few days after I accepted their quote. They brought the trees down pretty carefully and cleaned up. I give them a slightly lower review overall because they knocked out a fairly large branch from one of my other trees and pushed over a potted plant during the cleanup (and didn't say anything to me about it--I like to think they just didn't realize they did it).

I called the Arborel over a week ago to schedule an appointment for a sick tree. Tim answered the phone and told me he'd have someone call early the week of June 9 to schedule a visit. He admitted they were short-handed, but promised a call. I waited the entire week and received neither call nor visit. I called this AM and left a angry, but not profane, message saying I didn't know how a company that didn't return phone calls received such a good rating on Angie's List. Tim called me at my office and admitted they'd dropped the ball, but added he didn't appreciate the tone in my voicemail. I told him I didn't appreciate the snub. He only response, other than a weak apology, was I should find another company closer to where we lived. I still can't understand how this company gets such rave reviews, when they can't keep track of their personnel and can't return phone calls.

We contacted Arborel in the fall 2013 to evaluate our landscaping, get advise on proper maintenance, have maintenance performed, get advice on planting figs and grapes. We were impressed with Arborel's knowledge and genuine interest in the care and maintenance of trees/plants. Unlike some companies who just want to cut down everything and replant, we were encouraged by Arborel to maintain what we had. In the fall we signed the contract and prepaid the full amount to receive a discount. Most of the work was supposed to be completed in the fall (some services of course can only be done at certain times of the year and we expected those to be done in the spring) however due to weather conditions none of the work was performed in the fall. In February we were contacted to do the work on the cherry trees, j. maple and walking stick. After 4 months all of the work, except for the oak injection (proper timing necessary) is complete. In the beginning when the work could not be performed, a little more communication would have been nice because we were starting to wonder what was going on. But now that all the work has been completed, we are satisfied. We have worked mostly with Ken Tomajko, Certified Arborist; who has been wonderful. Ken is extremely knowledgeable, patient (we always have lots of questions), thoughtful, outgoing and listens to what we want and offers advice. We are confident that the decisions we made with his help were the correct ones. Ken also went above and beyond by replanting our potted fig tree, which we were likely going to kill due to our lack of planting knowledge. He didn't want that to happen and offered to go out and buy the pot, rocks, soil, etc and transplant it himself! We are grateful that he did this, since the fig tree also hold sentimental value to us. But Ken just hates to see a plant not thrive - he is very passionate about his work, which is what you want in any contractor.
Description of Work: Pruned the following of deadwood, unhealthy branches, crossovers, etc: very large, very old oak, prune very large, very old maple, new weeping cherry and Jappanese maple trees, Harry Lauder walking stick tree; soil testing in preparation for planting fig tree, care of spruce and oak trees; trunk injection on oak for prevention of oak wilt, root system revitalization on 2 maples between street and sidewalk; transplant grape vines from one location in yard to another; planted our fig shoot from one pot to another; removed rocks from around the base of a line of arborvitae to encourage growth, get water to roots; relocated rocks to other parts of bed

Everything went well. They spent the entire day cutting down two trees and clearing out the hillside. They worked very efficiently. They hauled away the tree and all of the brush which was no small task. Definitely worth it. I am putting a price of $600 which is what I seem to remember but it may have been slightly more. Sorry it has taken me awhile to get back to this website to do my reviews.

We were very pleased about the quality of the work and the reasonable price. We have bushes and flowers at the base of the Hemlocks, and the crew of two men were very careful and the plants were hardly damaged at all. The workers were courteous, knowledgeable, and professional. I was with the worker who pruned the fruit trees, and together we decided exactly what branches should be removed. The trees look great. The supervisor Tim was here for the last hour checking things out and helping with the final cleanup. It took from about 8 a.m. till noon to do the work. Tim arranged with our Borough, Edgewood, to have parking places reserved for the truck and chiping machine.

All work done on time. As the trees trimmed were quite large, the guys were willing to cut smaller branches first and reevaluate the original plan that was quoted. The guys were more interested in doing what would actually work out best as opposed to just wanting to "cut and run". They really took pride in their work.

The guy working from a bucket truck cut the large branches from the Oak tree and let the pieces drop from 20-30 ft and bounce where ever. The 2 ft sized logs nicked the tree trunk in several places, were dropped onto my azalea's, cracked the sidewalk, hit my railing and light pole, and smashed the water line cap. He was in such a big hurry he was not being careful with my property or the poor tree he was cutting. When I went out and said something to the guy on the ground, he just shrugged his shoulders.

Response from The Davey Tree Expert Co.
This rating is very surprising. The Member called to voice her concerns with us immediately after the job was completed and we responded very quickly to help correct any issues that were caused by our crew's work. Our manager stopped back to the property to meet with the Member and discuss the work. During this meeting the Member admitted that her sidewalk was previously cracked and in poor condition. There was also no damage shown to the landscaping beneath the tree, the railing, or light pole. The cap to the water line in front of the Member's house was cracked and we worked with the water authority the very next day to have the cap replaced at no cost. We understand the Member's concerns, but we were under the impression that we did everything in our power to make it right.

Experience overall was excellent. The estimator was punctual, courteous, and offered a quote that was lowest of the three companies from which I received estimates. Crew was on-time and did a good job, including the clean-up. Only negative was the crew did not prune two of the trees away enough from the utility lines so I had to call them to come back out (at no additional cost to me); they were on time and did the work quickly. Final bill was consistent with estimate. Overall, and excellent experience, I would definitely use this Davey location again!

I had contracted with Arborel to remove limbs from Oaks that were overhanging my roof. The guys arrived on time and made quick work of the project. They were courteous, efficient and very professional in their work. They cleaned up, making sure no debris was left from the cutting. It was a job done extremely well and within the proposed estimate. I will not hesitate to use Arborel for any future tree work that I may have. It was a real pleasure to get the estimate and have work done on estimate, on time and with quality workmen who obviously take pride in customer satisfaction.

Tree expert came promptly to give an estimate and was clearly very knowledgeable. It took a while to work my way into their schedule, but the day of the job, everything was done according to schedule. Two large trees and a small one were pruned, a small dead tree was removed, and a bush was removed. All debris was totally removed, and there was no damage to my yard. Original estimate turned out to be higher than eventual charge, which was a pleasant surprise. Will definitely use again.

I "inherited" 25 trees of various kinds from the previous owner of my property and they had all been neglected. The guys from Arborel have taken over the management of all of them and have brought them back to "life". Ken takes a personal interest in everything that goes on with my trees and shrubs and not only communicates problems but gives me solutions which work well and are tailored to the particular situation. Our tree was wedged between a shed and our house and butted up against the neighbor's stone fence. The narrowness of our yard, and the fact that it is fenced and higher than the alley, meant that they needed to bring a cherry picker to our neighbor's yard. The Arborel people arrived promptly, looked over the job, and went right to work. They removed the tree, lifting it over the fence with the cherry picker, and took away all the wood except for some firewood the neighbor wanted. They removed the debris being extra careful in the neighbors' yards even removing the branches from the neighbor's garage roof. My only regret is that they were unable to remove the stump because they could not get the grinder into the yard (we knew that from the time of the estimate. The size and location of the tree made this an expensive project. I would gladly work with Arborel again.
