Work went very well, there was no property damage, no leftover debris, nor any delays encountered. The work appears first class and the trees now look the way we expected them to after trimming. We are very pleased and have arranged additional plant treatments this season, and other trees pruned next year.
Description of Work: We had a Silver Maple tree and a Dwarf Crabapple tree in our front yard trimmed and pruned.

UPDATE: Arborel is correct in that they offered a resolution to the issues described below. I have updated the ratings to reflect their response There were several issues of concern which would prevent me from using Arborel's services in the future. 1. Damage to my driveway ? I noticed several 8? to 10?diameter divots in my asphalt driveway presumably made from tree limbs being hap-hazardly dropped onto the surface. Fortunately, my driveway is not new otherwise repair would have been be required. 2. Prioritization ? It was requested by Arborel that I prioritize the work to be completed in the event that the allotted time was not sufficient to remove all the trees identified. I provided a prioritized list that was not followed in part because because the ?bucket? truck was not available to access the trees close to my house. I was informed by a member of the Arborel crew that they would save a couple of hours and return when the proper equipment was available. Also, the stump grinding equipment was available for only a short period in the afternoon and neglected to remove a highly prioritized stump. 3. Possible Tree Damage ? During Arborel's pre-inspection of the project, Rob correctly expressed concern about grinding the stump of one of the trees to be removed due to its? proximity to a very large Oak and the potential for root damage. It was agreed that this stump would not be ground however despite not being on the list, Arborel's crew did grind this stump. Hopefully, the Oak will not sustain damage.. 4. Work Schedule ? Obviously, I was not watching the Arborel crew with a stopwatch and will assume that they worked for the amount of the time contracted. However, I can confirm that the crew was mysteriously not present for an extended period during the morning? When I contacted Arborel to inquire about their return, I was informed that they had fulfilled their contractual obligations and would not be coming back. I have used Arborel's services in the past and was previously pleased with their performance but will never use them again. I found them to be unprofesional both in the scheduling process in which I had to contact them several weeks after submitting the contract to prompt them to schedule the work and with their customer service philosophy.
Description of Work: Contracted an Arborel crew (and equipment) for a day to remove trees and stumps in my yard.

Response from The Davey Tree Expert Co.
Let us begin by saying that we were very disappointed to learn of our customer’s dissatisfaction with our work through a letter and an Angie’s List posting from the Member only after a phone conversation where none of the Member’s concerns were expressed. If the Member would have made us aware of these concerns we would have, and still are willing to do whatever is necessary to satisfy the member. It is very difficult to address the concerns of the member when we were not made aware of the members concerns during our initial phone conversation following the work. After receiving the letter and reviewing the Angie’s List post, we attempted to contact the member four times by phone with no response. It is very difficult to come up with a response to the members report without being able to contact the member or visit the property to assess the validity of the member’s claims. However, we will attempt to address the claims in order below: 1) Damage to the driveway: As the Member states, our crew “presumably” caused damage to the asphalt driveway by dropping limbs onto the driveway surface. Without being able to inspect the damage, it is difficult to determine to if our Arborist was responsible for the divots in the driveway. Our Arborists take great pride in caring for our client’s properties. An accident may have occurred where a limb may have fallen onto the driveway surface, but without being able to contact the member to visit the property we cannot make a determination. 2) Prioritization: The member provided our company a list of prioritized items to be completed in a 7-hour contract day on site. The list consisted of 22 items and we completed 17 of the 22 items in the 7-hour day. Our crew missed a stump that was listed as priority #7 and we have notified the member that we would be happy to stop back at no additional charge to take care of that stump. The other items not completed were priority #17-20 (rather low priority items). Nearing the end of the contracted 7-hour day, our crew decided to handle priority items #21 and 22 as beginning the work on items 17-20 would have put them well beyond the contracted amount of time. We feel that in completing all but four of the items that we provided an excellent value for the member. Although the bucket truck was not present, we do not believe it would have aided the crew in completing all 22 items in a single day. The contract with the member states, “I feel that we can accomplish most, if not all of the removals and stump removals in one contract 7-hour day.” It was not guaranteed that every item would be accomplished and the member understood this portion of the contract. 3) Possible Tree Damage: The member is correct in saying that we ground out an extra stump that was not on the work order. The member of Arborel’s staff running the stump grinding machine was not following the work order and saw a freshly cut stump and took it upon himself to grind it out. We have addressed the importance of following the work order exactly with our crews to prevent this from happening in the future. Although the stump was ground out, our experienced staff understands that when a stump is in close proximity to another valuable tree to only grind out the stump to just below the surface of the ground to eliminate the chance of affecting the root system of a neighboring tree. Again, without being able to contact the member, we have not had the opportunity to examine the stump grinding work to see if any damage was actually caused to the root system of the Oak tree. 4) Work Schedule: In regards to this complaint, we spoke with the crew leader who attests that the four members of the crew were on site from 8:40 AM – 3:45 PM without ever leaving the property. This work period completely fulfills our contractual obligations. 5) Customer Service: Upon receipt of the member’s signed contract, the member was informed that we would be back in touch as soon as we had a firm date for the work to be completed. The member contacted us approximately 4 weeks after we received the signed contract when we had yet to contact him as far as scheduling. Our backlog at this point of the year is unusually long, approximately 6 weeks, which is about how long it took for the member’s job to be scheduled. After the member contacted us by email on November 23 to check on the status of the scheduling, we settled on Friday, December 3 to complete the work. The crew arrived promptly on the morning of December 3 and worked for just over 7 hours as the contract stated. As far as our customer service philosophy is concerned, we like to let our reputation on Angie’s List and other forums speak for itself. We strive for 100% customer satisfaction in everything that we do. If an issue arises, we handle it to the client’s full satisfaction. Unfortunately, when an unsatisfied customer avoids contact with us, it becomes very difficult to resolve the matter.

We were new to the area. Based on neighbor recommendation called Davey Tree. Rep came out right away (Jan 10). Excellent explanation of what they could do, how they could do it, and costs. Then the big snow hit. Our project was not an emergency. I didn't expect to see Davey Tree right away. I knew they would be busy for several weeks or months on projects far more of a problem than ours. However, it took until Jul 10 to get them to come do the majority of the work. I had to make several phone calls over the many months to remind them to come. In fairness, I had not paid any monies to them prior to the work. When they did come in Jul 10 to remove the large tree and smaller evergreen, the work that was done was excellent. But, it took another couple of months (and phone calls) to get them to come back and complete the smaller portions of the job. Overall, the work they did was excellent, but getting them to come do the job and complete the job was pretty poor. For this reason, I won't use them again. When my neighbors ask, I tell them the work was great but it was really tough getting them to come out and do it.
Description of Work: Take down a very old, large, dead tree. Remove a snow damaged evergreen. Clean up large down branches.

I called for an estimate on a Wed/Thurs. I specified that during weekdays, I could not make an appointment until 5:30 pm at the earliest. They did not call me back until Monday and suggested an appointment for the next day at 5. I left work early to make the appointment - rushing home through traffic. At 5:05 I was turning the corner for my street when the Tree Guy called asking if I was stil coming for the appointment! By the time I hung up I was in my driveway. We went over what I wanted done and he told me he would mail me an estimate. It took over a week to get the estimate in the mail and it was significantly higher than the other estimate I recieved from another company.

Response from The Davey Tree Expert Co.
The member contacted our office on Wednesday, September 15 to set up an appointment to have one of our ISA Certified Arborists examine some tree work on her property. We entered her information into our system on this date, and told the member that we would be back in touch to set up a firm appointment time to look at the work and provide a proposal. We called the member on Monday, September 20 and asked if an appointment at 5 PM the following day would be acceptable. At no time did we pressure the member to accept this appointment time. If the member felt that it was not a possibility to meet with a member of our staff at this time we would have attempted to re-schedule to meet the member's needs. The member agreed to the time of the appointment, thus we proceeded to send one of our salesmen to the property for the bid the following day. Upon arrival the following day at the time of the appointment, our salesman made a courtesy call to make sure everything was still on schedule and reached the member who happened to be just a few minutes from the property. Our salesman walked the property with the member and examined the work for which the member was seeking a proposal. Our salesman sent out the proposal a week later and the member was apparently dissatisfied with the price and ended up not using us for the project.

The day I consulted with the owner, I recall telling him what I had planned to do as far as replacing the concrete and adding a small retaining wall after the tree was removed. I also recall telling him that all would have to be arranged with my cement contractor. I signed with this company because they were the only ones that detailed in writing what was to be done and what equipment was to be used. Months went by without any follow up calls from the company. I called early this summer to touch base with them, to reschedule the date and to find out when all would be set up for the job. I was told that when it got closer to the date, I would be contacted. Approximately 7 to 10 days before the day the work would start I still had not heard from the company, so I called tham again. I spoke to the office manager who informed me that all the permits were just about in place and the light company would be out within the next day or two to take care of the electrical lines. There was no consultation with the cement contractor before the work began. The job started on time beginning with the tree removal. Then the cement contractor removed the concrete except for a section that was approximately 3 to 4 feet wide under the trunk of the tree. The trunk of the tree had grown around the concrete and he simply could not remove it at the time. The operator of the stump grinder came a couple of days later and removed the stump and anything immediately surrounding it. Of course the stump grinder could not get anywhere near the cement. He said he would return the next day and finish. He returned but was gone after an hour or two. My cement contractor came to remove the concrete, inspect the job and informed me that the work was not complete. I returned home to find that the area that I thought would be cleared and leveled was not. When the stump was grinded, a lot of the dirt and soil was removed. The trunk was exposed and it was thick, deep and wide. When I reviewed my proposal, it stated, "Surface roots only." I know nothing about trees or arborists. I can only tell you what I think. My thoughts are that someone with knowledge of trees should have known that there would be lot more tree under the surface of the dirt. It was apparent to me that the cost of this job was underestimated. I had resigned myself to dig out my wallet and pay more to have the work completed. The owner came to the job and concluded that the work would be completed with no additional fees, which was quite a relief to me. Despite all this I want to note a couple of things that occurred. Some trees/plants were removed in order to accomodate the stump grinder. However, they were not replanted and as a result they died. I wanted the entire area leveled and was willing to pay anything additional to get it done right. The owner told the operator of the stump grinder to go from point A to point B. Neither would deviate from this. This was after my cement contractor told the operator of the stump grinder what needed to be done. The area was not leveled and there is still the trunk of this tree that is sticking up above the new retaining wall. I will be calling another company to complete the job to my satisfaction. I can't understand why a business would not accomodate the customer. There was a definate lack of communication in this case. I met with the owner 2 times; when I consulted with him in the beginning and when there was a problem at the end. I made calls to him between these times and could never speak to him. I am not writing this to malign the company. I felt like he got my business and that is all he cared about. This was my experience with them and this is how I felt about how everything was handled.
Description of Work: There was a extremely large, old Oak tree growing in the front of my home. The tree was so overgrown that the roots had grown over the concrete curbs at the edge of my driveway. This caused the concrete driveway and walkway to move and shift. I could not park my vehicle in the driveway and the walkway was raised so high that it became a trip hazard. This also caused rain water to flow toward the foundation of the house. Because of this tree, my driveway/walkway was an eyesore and the house had no curb appeal. I wanted that tree taken down and removed from the property. Once that was completed, I wanted the the stump grinded out and leveled in order to get a new driveway and walkway.

They were the only company to respond to my calls for estimates after a winter with very heavy snow fall and ice. He made an appointment but did not show up for the appointment. He must have come another time because he mailed an estimate. I thought the price was high but I had nothing to compare it to since no one else answered my call. I was a little disappointed that the arborvitae were not tied up us well as I thought they could have been but it was a big job.

I had a bunch of bushes overgrowing or dead in my small front yard. The estimator took a long time looking at my property and gave me some good advice on my landscaping and which bushes to remove and which to leave. The estimate was right on and the workers were professional, worked very fast, and cleaned up really well. I went with this company over a slighly cheaper estimate because I appreciated the care they took to do the job right.

They gave me a free estimate. It was a lot of money. They said they were experts in peach trees. They came out promptly. There was a miscommunication because I thought they he just left some of the dead limbs. I spoke with him about the issue and he explained to me that he is training the tree. He said he had explained all of that to me while he was there but I was in such a hurry that I must have not understood everything. I am now much more satisfied with the work he did. This is the third time we used the company. Initially I thought their proposal price for this work was high (especially in terms of the amount and cost of the work they had done for us previously) but it turned out to be 2/3 of a well-known tree company that also gave us an estimate. They did the work within 1-2 weeks of my signing the contract, which was appropriate considering that they must have gotten a lot of calls this past late winter.

Response from The Davey Tree Expert Co.
Our initial visit to the member's property was on Sept. 25, 2009. He agreed to a contract on Oct. 9, 2009 for multiple items including pruning/cabling of trees and plant health care items such as fertilizing and treating the trees on his property for Mites. Our work began with him on Oct. 30, 2009 and was to be completed in multiple visits to the property. The first phase of the project was completed and paid for by him, who, seemingly was happy with the work as he paid in a timely fashion. After our second visit to the property, he called our office to go over some of the items on the Proposal that he believed were unsatisfactorily completed. We arranged a time to meet with him at the property to examine the work and when doing so, agreed with him that the work was sub-par. The ISA Certified Arborist who met with him, then touched up the work for which he had expressed his concern. After our follow-up visit to re-do the work, he again called the office as he believed items that were taken care of on our follow-up visit were still not completed. At this time, we arranged another visit with him to make sure the work would be completed to his satisfaction. He met with our ISA Certified Arborist at the property and our crew member handled all of the concerns on the property with him present. After completing the work, our crew member shook hands with him and agreed that the work had now been completed to his standards and that payment for the completed work would be issued. When payment was not issued in a timely fashion, a follow-up call was placed to him who said that he had misplaced the initial copy of the invoice that we had sent to him. A follow-up invoice was sent to his office where he said he would send payment upon receipt. Arborel has yet to receive payment for the work completed. This posting on Angie's List was our first correspondence with him since he had agreed the work was completed and would be paid for upon receipt of our follow-up invoice. We are currently working with him to make sure the situation is handled to his liking.

It consisted of pruning oak trees and removing a Bradford pear tree. We were told that oak trees should not be pruned before November. The Bradford pear work was done because, through a misunderstanding, only one branch had been removed during the earlier work. The crew worked efficiently in light rainfall. The only problem that occurred was that they somehow overlooked one large branch and a number of smaller branches. I called today (11/30/2009) to inform them of their oversight and they came immediately (with apologies) to remove the branches. I found all the people from Arborel to be polite and professional. I trust their judgment completely.

They were extremely professional. The workers cleaned up after themselves. They did some extra work as well which was not in the contract. They took out the bushes which were around the tree. It was a nice gesture. They were courteous. They have an arborist who came down to check another tree and gave me a diagnosis. He also told me to save that tree and he would help in taking care of it.
Description of Work: I used them to take down a tree.
