This was an insurance claim, and the check from the insurance company was to cover all repairs. John assured us he could take care of everything. He would check and repair the wiring, switches and outlets as needed, and subcontract out for carpet replacement. We signed over the claim check to John, and
The company that came in to do the carpet replacement were excellent. Professional, on time, and did a great job. Moved furniture out and then back in after the job was done. Took away damaged carpet and pad and cleaned and vacuumed when they left. John advised us that he paid the subcontractor 50% of the cost of doing the carpet as a deposit, and said the balance would be paid to them after completion. When the job was done, we told John they'd done a great job and asked him when he would be coming to inspect and/or repair the outlets.
About 2 weeks later he came by. He checked things out and said he needed to get some parts he did not have with him and he would come back in a day or two. We asked if he finished paying the carpet installers and he said that he wanted to inspect the job himself for quality before he paid the balance, but that he would do so now that he'd seen the finished job.
John came back about a week later and spent about 1/2 hour in the room. He came out and pronounced everything complete. We asked again and he gave a copy to confirm that the job was paid in full using the proceeds from the insurance claim check.
We noticed soon after, however, that the light switches still didn't work - the overhead light came on briefly then flickered and went off - which indicated loose connections somewhere, we'd been told. Called John several times, but he never returned our calls.
But here's the kicker, about 6 months later we got a letter from the subcontractor stating they were still waiting for the 2nd half of the payment for the carpet job, and that if we didn't pay it, they would have to take us to court! We called and explained that we'd given the entire claim proceeds to John Sebastian, who was supposed to pay the subcontractor in full. We were able to get our bank to show the check had been cashed by Mr. Sebastian, and we provided that proof to the subcontractor, who told us they had been trying for months to get a hold of John but he never answered calls, voicemails, emails, nothing.
The subcontractor sued John and called us as witnesses. He never showed up for court. Default judgement went against him and court advised subcontractor to put a lien on his property. But John is a well practiced at this kind of theft by deception, apparently, as the contractor found out he keeps NOTHING in his name. Everything is in his son's name.
We were lucky the subcontractor did not try to go after us anyway, but his next victims may not be so lucky.
Incompetent, lazy, and deceitful, theif. Do yourself a favor and SKIP this name in your search for an electrical contractor.
