"Thanks [Member Name Removed]!"
Settled on 3 main brands (Carrier, Bryant, Trane) and added another (Rheem) as a lower end option. I used Angie's list to get the Carrier and Bryant Dealers. I knew both a Rheem and Trane (Wand S) dealer from prior experience.
I called and got quotes from Caruso, Metro, Wade, Staab, S Hills Plumbing, Woodruff and Smith. I called one other Bryant Dealer (twice) but never got a call back so they missed the cut right away.
So for Wand S here goes -
Called and got an immediate appointment.
John Smith came on time and looked over my situation. I had a quote from him before he left my house. Ultimately I decided on Carrier over Trane (Wand S) but I have no doubt Wand S would have done a good job as he had done work for me in the past and it was always top notch.
He was quite busy at that time and kept putting me off for more important appointments.
Finally after making the 3rd appointment ((with 2 no show prior appointments and I had called off work to make sure I was there), finally got it installed.
He did get it installed but found out later the piping wasn't done correctly.
Tried several times to get him to come back - but then he just never returned my calls.
I finally just gave up (and honestly, now I don't have time for them anymore - given service stinks).
Finally went to a different service - Coleman and Mitchell who corrected the problem - and they have been GREAT in follow up service. Also replaced the thermostat that Wand S installed since I wanted a programmable one (and Wand S wouldn't come to replace that either).
Morale of the story, sometimes when you go with the cheap price, you pay for it later.
We had an old low-efficiency gas furnace replaced by a new high-efficiency one. The change required installing an air inlet and exhaust through the basement's concrete wall (rather than using the existing chimney). I was amazed at how they could make such neat holes through concrete! They also applied tape and insulation in the ductwork to ensure no leaks. Clean up was perfect and the price was very reasonable. We later found the fan to be noisy and they came out and replaced it at no cost. The economy reflected in the gas bills is just fantastic and my only regret is not having done it sooner.
I didn't know a lot about the options that were available until John explained everything to me. He came out and did the initial estimate and had a written estimate to me in a reasonable amount of time. I did get other opinions/estimates for the job and Woodruff and Smith came in far less and after he explained his recommendation I was convinced that John was the guy to use.
I did a 203k loan, which meant there were more contractor requirements and paperwork to fill out than normal and John had it returned to me very quickly.
The job took about five days, which is exactly what he thought it would take. Woodruff and Smith came in a timely manner. The installers had everything cleaned up when the job was finished. I'm happy with the system and will use Woodruff and Smith in the future.
One last thing that I always try to mention regarding contractors to my own friends or contacts is whether they were responsive or not. I had no trouble getting ahold of this one whatsoever, and even had a couple of semi-lengthy, very informative conversations with him, one of which was even after the job was done. These guys clearly understand customer service and that part was appreciated just as much as the actual work.
