Nicole or Lindsay will always call to confirm your appointment.  They have accommodated my schedule every time! You will also receive a call from them to let you know that they are on their way. This day they were running  late and we were notified accordingly. Our appointment was between 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. They arrived approximately 12:35 p.m.

Service technician Dave was here to perform a 6 month tune up of the air conditioning unit. At that time, I advised that our air conditioning unit was not working properly. Dave stated he would have to perform a leak test, repair the leak and add refrigerant. I was advised of the cost, which was very expensive due to the price of the refrigerant.

The cause of the leak was discovered very quickly...it was the Schrader valves.  Dave replaced the valves, added the refrigerant and changed our filters.

Dave was very competent and was great at explaining all our options and the details. I was very happy with the service, but did not expect to have such a high bill.

The Service tech who reported was named Jim.  After only a cursory look and moving a few test wires around he said that "99% of the time this meant a cracked heat exchanger" and "the furnace was dead."  He began to give me what I considered a "hard-sell" for a new furnace even though "He wasn't a salesman."  While he wrote up the quotes, I called Metro for a second opinion.  Metro showed me a simple, manual re-start of the furnace so I wasn't left in the cold until the furnace could be replaced -- unlike the Wahl representative.  Metro's service tech used a video-scope to actually SHOW me the cracks in the heat exchanger (yes, Jim's diagnosis did turn out to be accurate-- otherwise I would have gone ballistic).  I was turned off by the Wahl's hard-sell approach and was skeptical of what appeared to be a snap diagnosis when I was seeming to be "over a barrel" and left in the cold.  Wahl has been an annual service/maintenance company for us off & on now for the past 11 years.  It seems like we have have sometimes had very positive or negative interactions in the past during the maintenance depending on who showed up to provide the service.
Response from Wahl Family Heating, Cooling & Plumbing

"Dear Mr. [member name removed], I am very sorry to hear your did not have a positive experience with our company. I was glad to hear Jim was punctual, especially on Christmas Eve. Jim has over 26 years of experience and that is what allowed him to determine quickly the signs of very dangerous and deadly situation - a cracked heat exchanger. The fact that Metro showed you how to turn a Furnace back on that is leaking deadly Carbon Monoxide is alarming to me. Had you gone with our Company we would have provided temporary heaters at no charge until a safe furnace was installed properly. Jim should have showed you the cracks with his camera. I am not sure why that did not happen but I can assure you that will be addressed. I am sad to hear that after all the years we have maintained your equipment that there was not more trust in our technicians diagnosis. We will work harder to see things from the customers eyes and convey the proper information. I am always available to discuss further. Sincerely, Sharon Wahl 412-276-9245"

The initial call was due to a failure on the line exiting the hot water tank. The failure (occurring the prior evening at about 11 PM) caused water to shoot out into the room like a fountain, getting in the furnace.  After assessing the situation and shutting gas off to the water tank, the furnace would not light - and from the service panel, needed to be serviced due to the water. Wahl showed up and got the furnace lit quickly.
Unfortunately, no simple solution was offered on the water tank. The tech from Wahl encouraged me to contact my insurer as they might cover the loss on the furnace (I did, they did). However, that took time. The only option I was offered was to replace the water tank - not an inexpensive option at around $1400  (up from his original estimate of about $700 without explanation). In addition, a dizzying set of options of differing tanks, furnaces, packages was all put in front of me and presented as my options.
Fortunately, a neighbor was able to (temporarily) repair the water tank exit line, providing me an option to wait. The service call for the day was $99. Two days later, after my call to order the service, Wahl sent three techs out to replace both furnace and water tank. The work went well and clean and (as of now- work was done earlier today) all seems well.

Furnace would not reliably fire (first or 2nd stage).  Ignitor would turn on but then it would not light.  Furnace is a 10 year old Trane XL80 in otherwise good shape (clean, regular service etc).  The problem could have been due to a bad pressure switch, air flow switch, ignitor, circuit board, or heat exchanger.  Service rep found that there was a small amount of CO in the vents (2-5 ppm), which is not good.  He indicated that this meant that we had a cracked heat exchanger.  However, when the rep was in his van I fired on the furnace and looked at the CO meter.  The reading when it initially turned on was 5ppm but this dropped to 2ppm within a minute and was at zero ppm from then on.  This suggests that the CO issue was very temporary and was due to the initial firing of the furnace.  Anyway, the rep said that is would cost $3200 to replace the heat exchanger (including parts) or $1800 to replace it if the part was still under warranty (it was).  Talking to two other HVAC techs after this service call, I was quoted $350 and 635 to replace the heat exchanger (labor only).   The service rep also said that I needed two new pressure switches, a new ignitor, and filter.  The total (parts and labor) to fix those items was $740 (actual parts cost retail is about $50 for these items with about 15 minutes install time!).   The high (and dishonest?) prices were clearly set so that I would consider replacing the furnace.  I was quoted at $3000 for a lesser furnace (80% single stage), $4800 for an equal replacement of the furnace that I had (80% efficiency 2 stage) or $6500 for a new 95% efficient furnace.  Again, later I had two quotes for $3000 and $2800 to do an equal replacement of my furnace from two other companies.
I was shocked by the high price to replace the supposedly broken parts on my furnace so I blew off the reps pressure to buy a new furnace on the spot.  I then called two other service techs.  The first one ($50 service call fee) was unsure what was wrong with the furnace but assured me that the heat exchanger was completely fine.  He suspected that there was either a bad switch or a bad circuit board.  I told this first tech about the service call from Wahl including that they thought it was a bad heat exchanger.  For the second tech, I did not tell him that anyone had come to my house previously.  The second tech ($50 service fee) thought the problem was either a bad air flow sensor, a bad filter (the filter was dirty) or a bad circuit board.  I asked him about the heat exchanger.  He went through all of the steps that he does to identify a bad exchanger (none of which the Wahl rep had done) and found that it was solid.  In other words, the heat exchanger was completely fine and the Wahl rep never ever really checked to see if it was broken (including using basic visual/sensory identifiers of a bad exchanger).  Anyway, I went with the first guy (after the Wahl service call) who replaced the circuit board (parts $225 (I actually purchased it so this was actual parts cost); labor $25) in about 45 minutes.  We also replaced the ignitor because the new circuit board came with a new ignitor.   Everything is working fine.
Overall - Wahl heating - Overpriced, dishonest and deceitful.  Do not use them for anything unless you have too (i.e. you have a warranty through them that requires them to do an annual service call).
Response from Wahl Family Heating, Cooling & Plumbing

"Dear (member name removed), I am very sorry that our Technician only used one tool to diagnose where the Carbon Monoxide you both saw on the meter was coming from. The equipment was installed in Nov. of 2000 making it 13 years old. We give options to repair the exiting problem and potential problems that could arise from aging parts. Our technician gave you his professional diagnosis, unfortunately he did not communicate his findngs properly to you. As a family business for almost 34 years we strive to give accurate diagnosis at a fair and competitive price. I will personally follow up with our technician. It would be helpful to speak with you as well to resolve this matter. Sincerely, Sharon Wahl"

Our experience with them was ok. The installation went fine. We still do not think the unit is working right, it does not seem to be cooling properly all of the time. We dealt with two technicians one was really good and one was average.

We had a long standing relationship with this company, and just decided to get a second opinion after many years of not being quite sure we were getting the most value from our service contracts. I have nothing negative to say about the service we received from Wahl's, it's just after interviewing a competitor we decided to have our service done by another company. The people at Wahl's are very nice, and they are well aware of our decision, and the reasons for our change.

Sharon, your response indicates to me that despite the fact my partner and I, had been loyal customers of yours for almost 9 years, AND the fact that I have spoken to you several times, AND the fact that my name, in addition to my partner, has been on just about every remittance we sent to you,. In fact, I referred one of my best friends  to your company because initially we were so impressed with you, and I believe that that referral resulted in quite a bit of business for you at a very nice property. You have ALL of our salient details, names, addresses at your office, I know that because we still get solicitations from your company. I wish you the best.

I was in my home as he was doing the inspection and working on the AC unit and I heard a large bang, and he had told me he fallen.  I come to find out the dryer connection was broken, so I called to schedule an appointment first thing Monday morning. It was hard to get a hold of them to talk to someone.  Once I got ahold of them, they said they would not pay for the repair of the dryer connection even though I had paid them ahead of time.
Response from Wahl Family Heating, Cooling & Plumbing

"We are very sorry about the confusion. The day she is called it was almost 90 degrees and our phones were ringing non stop. Our Tech. was unaware of the broken dryer vent. We did however go back, take pictures and replace it at no charge out of respect for our clients property. I believe we resolved this issue and have placed a call to confirm a resolution."

That aside, the checkup visit was done very professionally, by technician Curtis B, whom I do not hesitate to recommend.
He gave me some recommendations for other things to get done that cost
money (I think is required as part of a checkup visit, but he was gentle
about it).  And also gave advice about the air filter I've been using
that clarified for me that it's best to use the higher quality filters,
even though they put more of a load on the air intake — cause it helps
to keep the whole mechanism of the furnace more clean.

David Wahl was the person who initially came to my house, made the diagnosis & presented me with my options.  Bob & Ryan came out the next day for the installation.  This was the most professional group of contractors I have ever worked with.  They were knowledgeable, polite, respectful and left the area they were working in impeccable.  They took a picture of the completed job before they left & phoned the next day requesting to come back for a minute to adjust a pipe on the hot water tank that needed lengthening.  Someone back in the office apparently felt it should be a couple inches longer & it was followed through with.  Check, double check - I like that.  David returned this past Jan. for my "free 1 year checkup", again his service was exceptional.  I know I paid more for Trane but it was definitely worth the extra money.  I swear it provides superior temperature comfort.  I'm also glad to know that I have a solid, reliable company standing behind my purchases.

This is the worst vendor experience I have ever had.  Our old furnace died last fall and we had Wahl in to assess what we needed.  We educated ourselves as much as posisble and learned that you don't just buy a furnace, the key to good performance is understanding the whole system.  We asked Wahl and 2 other companies to do a full assessment of what we needed to heat our home efficiently and effectively, including supply and return ducts and static tests.  All three submitted bids and Wahl was the middle cost bid, but we were impressed with their service so we decided to go with them.  BIG MISTAKE!! Installation appeared to go smoothly.  After installation their tech told us that the duct to one room was insufficient.  We told them that we wished they had told us that before, but that we would address it when we did additional work on the house this year.  Over the course of the winter we noticed that our kitchen and third floor were not heating as well as before (despite it being a warmer winter) but we were busy with our new baby and outside deck work and decided to defer remedies until this summer's work.  When our general contractor began work inside he told us there were problems with the ducts and we should call Wahl to get their help making the system work.  We called and got a tech in (same one who came in on the first job) very rapidly to do an assessment.  This is when everything fell apart.  It turned out that the same small duct with several right angles in it was feeding our son's room and the whole back of the house.  There were also only 3 returns for our whole 2,500 SF house.  I have no way of knowing whether their original assessment was just not competent or whether they knew the problems and decided not to tell us to be a low bidder and get the work.  During this call, rather than helping us assess what needed to be done so we could deisgn proper ductwork we were given a quote for a new air conditioner (the old one was working fine once it was reconnected to the thermostat) and or ductwork, with no explanation of what needed to be done, when it could be done, or why we weren't told of the problems before the contract/install had happened. Then it all got worse.  I called 4 times over 2 weeks to try to talk to anyone about getting the work scheduled while my walls were still open.  I talked with people 3 of the 4 times and explained the situation and the urgency.  I never received a return call.  I finally went through Angie's list dispute resolution process (which took another 4 weeks) and still never got a return call, just defensive e-mails ferried through Angie's list.  Almost 2 months after the original call the owner sent his son who looked at the old ducts (which we by then had to remove to move forward on the house renovation) said they were a mess, but refused to take any responsibility for because they had not installed them. I was still hopeful that we could come to an amicable arrangement when a call was set up to discuss the possibilities because the owner's son had been so reasonable.  Instead, the first 20 minutes on the phone were spent with the person who never returned my calls blaming me for not calling over the winter when the first problems appeared, blaming me for not calling them more times or trying different phone numbers when they didn't call back, saying that I was lying about having asked for a full assessment of the heating system and not just a furnace installation, talking about how I "still had a chance not to void my warranty" (my contractor, without my approval, had rewired the thermostat to get the air conditioning working), and generally deflecting any responsibility.  I spent another hour on the phone calmly retelling the story with the owner and his son on the phone before all but the owner again began blaming me for all the problems and asserting no responsibility for their shoddy assessment of what we needed.  All we were looking for was some acknowledgement that their assessment had been incomplete and a negotiated discount for duct work or help designing the new system, but the attack dogs were out to avoid any financial liability, and it all happened with the owner on the phone.  I run a small company that helps hospitals improve by learning - I can assert with certainty that Wahl will never improve with their attitude toward problems and customers. At this stage I am most concerned with making sure no one else has such a horrible experience.  The kicker is we never would have known how bad things were if we hadn't happened to be doing additional work and would have assumed all was OK and our house was just a little drafty in the back.  I encourage all Wahl customers to review their ductwork.  I also feel badly that I probably ruled out the high bidder because they were competent and/or honest enough bid with additional ductwork that is needed to make the system function well.  I will be contacting Trane to share our experience (part of why we picked Wahl was they were certified by Trane) and the Better Business Bureau so others understand the problems that are not being addressed.  In short (or long), DON'T USE WAHL!!!
Response from Wahl Family Heating, Cooling & Plumbing

"First, I am the General Manager, and I was out with a personnel medical Emergency from July 11, until today, July 17th. I apologize that we did not get back to him; however we did make a service visit on 7/10/12, and have not been ignoring his concerns. On 7/10/12 we responded to a service call request made by Mr. Webster. There was no charge for the visit, Mr. Weber explained that several rooms in his home were not getting enough cooling, and claimed that the heating was also not up to par. However we did NOT receive any complaints in the winter that the home wasn’t’ heating enough. We only receive a call in the summer when the rooms were not cooling enough. The air conditioner is very old and inefficient and part of the problem, whether he wants to acknowledge this or not. As far as his claim that we scammed him on the wiring of his thermostat, he is misinformed. Only four wires are needed on the thermostat. The fifth wire is the common wire and does not need to be connected. If Mr. Webster had had a problem starting up the air conditioner and he called our company, any wiring issues created by the furnace installation would have been fixed free of charge under our installation warranty. (These came wires, however, are not loose, most likely from his contractor rewiring them) As far as the ductwork is concerned, when we responded on 7/10, Mr. Webster wanted to know how much “free ductwork” we were willing to install. After reviewing the installation contract, and speaking with the sales consultant, it was determined that Mr. Webster received all contracted work. (See attached contract). In Mr. Weber’s own description of what was said at the time of the sale, he explained exactly why we didn’t do the additional ductwork. We had offered to make the duct work modifications at an additional cost. Mr. Weber, thinking that the ductwork would only affect one room of his home, denied the modification and the extra cost associate with the work. We signed the contract for the installation without the modifications, and now he is trying to get them free of charge. Lastly, we dispute the claim that the furnace is only operating at 55-60% of capacity, and are willing to perform our own tests to show that this is inaccurate. As long as the supply and return of the furnace are the correct size (which they are), this is an untrue statement. If this was true we would be costing ourselves money as this unit is under warranty from our company for the next 10 years for parts and labor as long as he gets his turn-ups every year has no one else work on this furnace. We agreed to perform that following as a part of the installation and all of the work was completed. Install Trance XV95 80000 BTU Install trane digital programmable thermostat Install trane 5” perfect fit media air cleaner Install turning veins to the 2nd floor bedroom Re-support existing ductwork to the ceiling Remove existing flue pipe and re-route 10 year parts and labor warranty First year tune-up free"

They charged me a $70.00 trip charge to tell me that they were going to charge me $2700.00 to correct their own work that was done incorrectly the first time they did it and was charged $600.00 that time.  I did not expect to have the repairs done for nothing, but close to 5 times the original amount and their own tech said to me he could not figure out why it was done like this anyways....it indicated to me that they don't stand behind their work.
I used this company for a long time as my family has been using them for a much longer time, but within the last few years they keeping "finding" things  and suggestive selling products or services. They don't scare you into making purchases, but they place the thought into your head that you start thinking...what if this does happen.....
Response from Wahl Family Heating, Cooling & Plumbing

"I wish I had seen this and responded sooner. Your post is filled with 1/2 truths and misinformation. #1. The work we did that you said was incorrect worked properly for you for 10 years. The install was 12/12/2002. We were called to fix the flex duct because some sort of animal got in and chewed through it. #2. You can not compare a flex duct install in 2002 to sheet metal duct install price 10 years later. That is like comparing the price of an apple to a watermelon. The sheet metal install is not only more expensive for the materials but it is also more labor intensive due to the difficulty of the install. I am saddened that you would post such a negative review for a company that would served you well since 1998. I am available to discuss this with you further. Their first repairman was pleasant, prompt and honest. He spent day one changing out parts and was honest when he burnt out a circuit board and replaced the fan limit switch that wasn't broken. At the end of day one, he discovered the chared wire that had been pinched on the fan motor. He didn't charge me for day one but made arrangements to change out the motor on day 2. He changed out the motor took his $700 and left. It made sense that the burnt wire was the problem so I didn't pay much attention to any testing he did. It was warm and I didn't notice that the same problem (no automatic fan on the heat cycle) was still there. I called Wahl back and had a different service tech. All he wanted to talk about for 3 hours was the fact that my 18 year old furnace was hopelessly old and would continue to cause problems. I told him I just wanted it fixed and I'd think about new furnace next year. He told me that it would take replacement of three relays at $250/each to fix it this time. I basically threw him out because he couldn't tell me which relay was bad(after 3 hours of diagnosis)... he just wanted to replace all three. The next day my son and I spent 15 minutes following wires and discovered that one fan wire connector was plugged into the wrong place. We unplugged it and plugged it into the right place and the furnace has worked fine since. I believe the burnt fan wire was the original problem and the first repairman just took a LONG time to find it and didn't do a very good test when done. I think the second repairman was more interested in his commission on a new furnace and really didn't care about fixing anything. He certainly should have been able to fix something my son and I diagnosed in 15 minutes.  The other alternative is that he found the errant wire connection but figured he could get another $750 before he plugged the wire into the right place. In either case, the diagnosis was weak at best and when I replace the furnace, someone else will get the job.

It was purchased through a store and so, I am not sure about the price but I guess that it was fine. So far, the quality of their work has been fine.

Our old furnace had a cracked heat exchanger, so we contracted with Wahl to install a new furnace and make some minor changes to the duct work. Wahl also performed the original service call to diagnose the problem, and were promt and very professional. We did get a second opinion and bid. We signed the contract on a Thursday and they installed the following Tuesday. They were punctual and able to complete the installation exactly as planned. We had gotten alot of advice that it was important to do exact calculations regarding the house size and ductwork etc. to size the furnace. Our original bid was or a larger furnace than needed because this was not done (they just bid the size of the old furnace) but once we asked they calculated it and got it right. The other contractor made the same mistake. From here on out the installation was smooth and we are very happy with our unit. They installed the Trane XV-95. Very efficient and fairly quiet. Kicks plenty of heat and keeping our house nice and warm through this first month.

The only other glitch we hit could have been disasterous, but worked out fine. There was a tiny pinhole leak in the gas line. We smelled some gas and called them a few days later, and they responded and fixed it immediately.  This potentially dangerous oversight is the only reason I graded quality as a B instead of A.

Wahl was timely, responsive, clean and professional, and reasonably priced. We definitely would recommend them to people looking to replace their furnace.

It was a good experience with them. They were very professional. They did all the work in one day. I was very pleased with them. They were very helpful in answering the questions. The people were very helpful, courteous, and very professional. Those were some of the good things that I liked about the company. I would use them in the future.

They were outstanding.  The workers were all very professional as well.  They cleaned up after themselves very well and they actually put my furnace in a few years ago. The salesman was great too and did not pressure us.  We felt very comfortable.

This was rather an emergency. Our AC went out during a very hot period at the end of May. My husband is disabled and we depend on the air conditioning for him a lot.  We have dealt with this company before, that could have influenced how fast they came to us.

I did get a couple of other estimates, Wahl was very close, not the lowest, but had the Trane product that my husband preferred to some of the others we checked out.

They were great! There was nothing that I asked for that I didn't get. There is no way I can think of that their service could be improved. I would absolutely use them again!
