On June 16, I met with Gary Seward at a home I was in contract to purchase. Upon reviewing my home owner regulations, the information about fencing provided two references - one type of fence available at one place, and another type of fence available at Seward fence. My interpretation of that was that these were the only two types of fences permitted by the HOA and the vendor listed was the vendor I had to use. After looking at the types of fences that were my options, I chose the fence that Seward Fence had.
The primary purpose for the fence was to keep my dogs in my yard and other animals out. I met with Mr. Seward at the home on June 16, prior to closing on the house in hopes to get the fence expedited so I could bring my dogs
to the home (they were in Ohio with my parents). On June 16, Mr. Seward indicated that it would be seven weeks before they would be able to get out. I was a bit surprised, but felt my hands were somewhat tied given my HOA rules. I asked to be put on the schedule that day, with the agreement that I would provide at least a 50% deposit to him. In good faith, I provided a cashier's check in the amount of $5,000 to him the next day, hand delivered. That was the last I heard from him for weeks.
After waiting patiently for six weeks, I called the office to see when I was scheduled for installation. I was not given a specific date, rather I was told that he didn't know when they would be out, but it would be done within the seven weeks. Seven weeks came and went, with no communication from anyone at Seward fence. I finally called back about the third week of August, and they said they would be out sometime near the end of August. At that point, I was extremely frustrated, but chose to manage my frustrations for fear that voicing any frustration would result in further delay.
Finally, the week of September 15 came...which was the beginning of week 15 from the original 7 week timeline given to me in June 16. I asked Mr. Seward to come out so we could finalize the details of the fence - he was initially resistant to this idea and indicated that we had already done that. I noted that was 15 weeks ago and that I wanted to make sure that we were on the same page. With reluctance, he came out. And its a good thing he did - had he installed the fence he had initially drawn up, it would have looked awful. We had great difficulty communicating that I wanted the back line of the fence to be parallel to the house. I thought we had resolved that, however, I came home one day during installation to find out that was not the case. His crew called him and let him know I was unhappy. We argued, and when I called him back, he did not pick up his phone to talk to me. I called again, and he did not answer. Neither time did he return my call. Thankfully, when I returned home from being out of town, the fence was what I had hoped it would be.
During the time this fiasco was going on, I took the opportunity to look at some reviews on here. It seems as though he operates under two extremes - the version I got and the version I expected to get. I got a bill today, for the full remaining balance of the fence. Shockingly, he thinks he should be paid in full, on time for extremely poor customer service.
In addition to writing a review here, I will also be filing a complaint with the attorney general's office, as well as with my homeowners association. The customer service he provided was terrible, and was a source of great frustration to me. The end product is beautiful, but man, what a mess it was to get there.
