Soon after I first called, I got a very detailed estimate for removal of the dead ash tree as well as other pruning. While no arborist is inexpensive, Fairfield gave me the most affordable of four estimates. They also offer a 10% discount for Angie's List members. The 4-man crew arrived exactly on time and did an excellent job. They really hustled and worked great as a team. One man climbed the tree to notch and saw off the branches, while the others worked with ropes to direct the fall of the branches, cut them apart and carry them to the chipper In the front of my house. The ground crew also cut some of the small lower branches with a hand saw on an extension pole. They had to remove a section of my fence to get the stump grinder in, but they replaced it perfectly. I was very impressed by their skill and strength. The crew cleaned everything up quite nicely before they left. Overall, they did a great job and I would hire them again.
I emailed Fairfield Tree Services on 6/23 (after normal business hours) through Angie's List. They responded on 6/24 with a message "Thanks for your inquiry, we'll have one of our salesman call you soon." It is now 6/28 and I have not heard back from them. I emailed another company the same time I emailed Fairfield. That "stump removal" company stopped by the night of the 24th after finishing that days work to let me know what they could do. The other company completed the job this morning.
I called several companies from the list for estimates. Mark, from Fairfield, called a few days after I sent my request by email to the company site. He showed up exactly when he said he would and we looked at what I wanted done. He gave me the price, including the discount they provide for Angie's List members. I had no idea what to expect, but I was hoping it wouldn't be in the thousands of dollars. I would have liked to pay less, like anyone, but he told me the crew would be there for about seven hours, and the estimate was based on that.
The tree in the front was a large maple, with a lot of dead branches and several large limbs leaning toward the house and garage. I wanted to get it cleaned up and made safe, as it was causing me a lot of clean up and I worried about parts of it coming down in high wind or heavy snow. After waiting a few weeks for the snow on the ground to melt off, the crew showed up right on time on a Saturday morning. They removed the dangerous and dead limbs, and then limbed the tree up to leave a nice canopy. I was concerned that they might have taken too much out, but Mark explained that on an old tree that has never been pruned, that is the procedure. Also, they removed the broken trunk off of the tree in the back, which was leaning over my deck, pretty quickly.
After looking at the work for a few days, I called Mark back to make sure that the tree would re grow some of the lower branches and fill back in over time, as it provides a lot of shade for the house. He called me back right away, and even stopped the next day and assured me that in a year or two, that I would never know that they were there, while the tree was no longer any danger to the house. They made a small hole in the blacktop driveway, which they said they will come back to fix when the weather breaks. I will post when they do.
All in all, they were there about six hours, very professional, and cleaned everything up very well. If you want to have this done, I certainly recommend them. Just one more thing, after a hard prune your tree will look VERY different, so be ready and give it time to fill back in.
