Hired McClain Bros for Deck Replacement. There were some issues with initial materials order and cost that was addressed immediately to my satisfaction. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO BUILD A DECK, LOOK ELSEWHERE. I am out $3000 and I have no deck. Allow me to tell you the story and if at any point you feel that I was an idiot for going ahead with this company, I will not fault you for that judgment. I was looking to replace an aging deck with a new one. McClain Bros sent Project Manager Rich C. who looked at my deck and said that while we would have difficulty securing the permit quickly, he thought we could go ahead with his contacts at Philadelphia License and Inspections named BARRY. Their estimate was a single line item. No itemization for parts or labor. RED FLAG (which I ignored.) I called their two references and decided to go ahead. They asked for HALF the money upfront (RED FLAG I found out later). They showed up in a truck that clearly identified the company as a plumbing company. (RED FLAG which I ignored.) The two guys they sent were less than skilled. They managed to pour a concrete footing in the wrong place. They broke my property (never replaced it either). They left reciprocating saw blades around my backyard for my preschooler to find. They were a disaster from the start. At the end of the day, I called Rich C. who informed me that the men would be more careful going forward. The next day Philadelphia License and Inspections was called by a neighbor and this turned out to be a lucky break as the deck they were installing was nowhere near to code. RIch C. is either ignorant of the requirements of Philadelphia building code or less than honest with me but long story short the project got shut down. Rich C.s contact at Philadelphia License and Inspections BARRY was unwilling to vouch for McClain Bros. He may have been imaginary. Weeks went by and I had to chase McClain Bros for updates. The owner, Mark McClain, was unprofessional and unpleasant throughout. After 4 weeks with half of a deck hanging off my house, McClain Bros revealed that the project would need to go before a zoning board, require architectural drawings, no longer qualified for an EZ deck permit, and I pulled the plug. I got back half of my deposit. His employees left a pile of wood at my house with all of the metal hangers still on it. They took the tops off the footings so they could not be used. Mark assured me that he would give me the evidence the footings were up to code. He never did. I was assured I would have my broken property replaced. They never did. Personal dishonesty is a disappointing thing to see in the leadership of a company. Perhaps McClain Bros are good at plumbing. But I have never seen a professional organization so singularly at sea as the four men I encountered at McClain Bros. They lack expertise regarding Philadelphia building code. They lack expertise at basic components of construction. They are use fraudulent claims of and connections within L to induce you to work with them. A six week nightmare from start to finish. If Philadelphia License and Inspections had not been called, I would have ended up with a deck that would not have been safe or compliant with building code. Here is hoping I saved you a headache.

every time they discovered something or we asked to fix something else related to the problem, it was either $500 or $1000. biggest complaint cleanup. they lack the proper equipment to clean up during and after the job and we had to redo their cleanup every day. they even lack enough drop cloths. their plumbing work itself is very good, as was their tile work.

The worker was wonderful, he explained everything to me before he started and that was good.

Very satisfied with this company. Rich was on my request with you very quick. He was professional when seeing what my problem was and gave me an estimate. He sent Mike out to fix it on the same day. Mike was personable and showed me just where my problem was and fixed it. Both men were outstanding and I thank them. Will use this company again.
