Contacted company and established mutually acceptable appointment. Pre-secured all necessary parts so no second trip necessary. Technician called in advance and arrived at appointed time. Plumber was efficient, neat, respected our home and quite pleasant, keeping us appraised of his work progress and offered a less expensive solution to the new washer cut-off valves that required no drywall cutting and cheaper parts.
We would have given Schuler the highest grade on price; however, we could not get an 'up front cost estimate' for the desired work [thought it would be around $1000 which it was and trusted prior Angie's List comments], and the price for the Kohler toilet was about $70 higher than the desired model we found at Loew's on-line and specifically requested. Also, nowhere in their literature or on Angie's List was it advertised that senior citizens get a 10% discount. The technician had to make us aware of this benefit when preparing the bill - he/they get(s) a big plus for honesty here! Finally, unlike most plumbing contractors, we were unaware they charge by the hour from the time they leave their establishment, while in transit, on the job, and an estimate of the return trip time. In the end, we believe this proved to be a cost savings as most plumbers seem to charge by the job from some internal book price rather than actual work performed, and several of the jobs performed were a relative snap for someone with the tools and knowledge. Bottom line - probably an A but not sure so gave them a B. They did provide a detailed invoice which was appreciated.
Finally, the technician did a cursory review of the home's plumbing systems and pointed out a questionable expansion tank and valve on our furnace. We have a full service contract for this item through another vendor, so rather than have Schuler repair it (which I suppose they would have liked), we will call our HVAC company ASAP and have them repair it before we have a problem.
All in all, a very positive experience.
"We are sorry to hear that you were not fully satisfied with Schuler Service. Based on your review, a long time has passed (20 years) and since then everything has changed. But I would like to point out that even then, we excelled at customer service, which is why this review is surprising to us. From our staff to our services, our company has evolved into an Angie’s List Service Award winning company and we strive to provide the very best in customer service and satisfaction. As evidenced by our other, more recent reviews, we service a wide array of clientele and have always met their needs. We can guarantee that your next experience with Schuler Service will exceed your expectations. Sincerely, Greg Joyce Owner Schuler Service, Inc."
When I compare the overall service and price, Schuler has been great. The previous service performed on my heater was done by an inexperienced low level tech who was not able to answer any of my questions. With Schuler, John and his supporting cast where both knowledgeable and friendly. I may have paid a little more than expected and I feel it was worth it for the overall positive experience.
Thanks to the Schuler team!
Have used Schuler before, will certainly use them again.
I found this service in the Angie's List booklet. There was a $50 coupon that was used.
As he brought the heater into the house the plumber noticed a picture of our son in military uniform. When he asked if our son was on active duty we told him "yes." He then told us that they have a 10% discount on equipment for military families and gave us the discount.
The heater has been in for a couple of weeks now and runs just fine. What's not to like about this company?
In retrospect, if I would have insisted the plumber wait for the water company to be onsite, i would have saved the extra hours labor, but they thought they could shut the water off without issue. Also, I would have waited 2 days to get an appointment with water co.
Anyway, the rest of the job was uneventful, Brian cut the old valve out, soldered in a new ball valve ($25), and tested for leaks. No problem.
So I would definitely use them again, Schuler Service seems to be a very responsive and trustworthy outfit. Just make sure you optimize the hours they spend with you!
There was one problem, the wrong floor tile was installed. My wife questioned it but did not correct the problem. I was out of town and when I returned the following day, I showed the installer the sample we had purchased to ensure we got the correct tile. The tile that was initially installed was from the same manufacturer and was the same color, but the finish was totally different. Since it was already installed, I was offered a very reasonable discount to accept this tile. However, my wife hated it. When I told the installer, he said OK and immediately started removing the tile he had just installed. There were no additional charges and the installer made sure he had the correct tile before he began the reinstallation.
