Description of Work: The Homemasters rep looked at my roof and told me that obviously my Big Deal $400-worth-of-roof-cleaning-for-$250 would do absolutely nothing. Instead, I should purchase the $1,200 roof pressure-washing package and then, when the pressure-washing removed the moss that was likely preventing roof leaks, I'd need to have the roof repaired and shingles replaced to the tune of $5,000-$6,000. I wasn't entirely surprised--I know the roof has some damage--but apparently my coupon cannot be applied to this work, so it's useless to me. In addition, I really wasn't happy with the salesman's actions, which lessens the chance that I'll hire them for the larger job. My standard practice is to obtain at least two, preferably three, bids for any contracting work costing more than $1,000. This was somewhere between $5,000-$7,200 so it certainly fit that requirement. However, when I informed the salesman that I'd like him to provide a written estimate for the proposed work so I could compare it with other estimates, he became annoyed. He suggested that: -His company really didn't work that way--they expected that when they took the trouble to come out, they would be doing the work -Additional estimates were a waste of my time because the other contractors would just tell me the same thing -Homemasters' position on Angieslist.com should be all the recommendation I need -I should reschedule my appointment with him to a time when he could make his presentation to my husband (I'm not married) or to some man who would be better able to understand the technical aspects of roofing and could explain it to me -He had decades of roofing experience and so obviously knew what he was talking about -I had all the estimate, i.e., $5,000-$6,000 for repair, $12-20,000 for replacement, that he was going to give me; his company didn't do written estimates As I said, I'm not disagreeing with his assessment of my roof; I've rehabbed several houses (although not in the northwest, where moss seems to be the biggest issue) and those prices are high but not out of line for the work he was suggesting. But I did feel a bit bullied and pressured to agree to something I obviously wasn't comfortable with, especially after I stated (multiple times) that getting multiple written estimates was my firm policy. So now I will obtain my additional estimates from other Angies List vendors and make a decision on a contractor. If Homemasters is clearly better (AND willing to supply a written estimate) I suppose I might use them...but it would take a LOT of clearly better to overcome my initial impression.
