The Viridian crew did the job over two days, completing it on May 26. The installation went well, with no problems and no surprises. Garen checked with me a couple of days later to ensure that all the windows were working properly. He said to get in touch if we had any problems. Jumping ahead to the winter, the windows are not drafty and are comfortable to sit by, even when the wind is blowing. I don?t expect to make up the cost of the windows in fuel savings, but the comfort and the smooth operation of the windows is totally worth the price.
Another happy ending? Not so fast. About the middle of June we discovered that the lower sash of the third floor window was jammed open and could not be moved at all. This was a potential problem since I had scheduled for screens to be installed on July 15. I left multiple phone messages and emails for Garen. He contacted me about the end of June and looked at the jammed window. He wasn?t sure what caused the problem but said his crew might have used rope that was too light. I said it needed to be fixed by July 15 at the latest so the screen installers could do their job. Garen said no problem. The next day the bathroom window lower sash jammed. I managed to get the rope back on the pulley and left Garen a message. I never heard back from Garen. July 15 came and went. I took the bedroom window apart and pulled out the lower sash so the screen installers could have access. Now I had an inoperable window - actually more like a hole in the wall - and house guests due in a few weeks.
We had never had a problem with jammed windows in the past, no matter how wide we opened them, but the windows giving trouble were shorter than the other three windows - which were trouble free - so I put a stop in the bathroom window so it could not be opened past the pulley. And I called another window repair service. These people repaired the third floor window. The owner of that company said that the ropes on all the windows might be too light. but also pointed out that the double pane glass is much heavier than the old glass, so the window weights must be larger. The larger weights hit bottom sooner than the old weights so the rope slips off the pulley if the window is opened too far. Putting in a stop, as I had done in the bathroom, was the correct thing to do. The Veridian crew never mentioned this, even after the problems occurred.
About this time - I forget the exact date, but it was about the beginning of August - an employee of Veridian - not Garen - called. He said Garen had just informed him of the problem, which was no longer a problem. I did ask about the possibility of the ropes being too light and they agreed to replace the ropes in the larger, heavier windows. This was done, again quickly and neatly. I put a stop in the third floor window. We have had no further problems. Garen called to confirm that his crew had replaced the ropes correctly.
In my opinion, Veridian should have used the correct weight of rope in the first place. In my opinion, Veridian should have warned me about the issue with the weights. In my opinion, Veridian should have been more responsive in fixing the problem. The experience was quite disappointing.
I had some of my windows replaced this way, and the rest of the windows in my house replaced with all-new windows, for various reasons. The only downside to this process is that it's not quite energy-efficient enough to qualify for rebates or tax credits, but it costs less than all-new windows, and I felt that waste that was saved by preserving the wood of the old windows made it worth it.
That being said, sometimes 100 year old wood that is sun-exposed does not make a very stable window when complete, you should also expect that your windows will need a paint job after resurfacing, as well as new hardware. Old windows also have security issues that you need to address when the "security" of being painted shut no longer is relevant. So although the initial cost is far cheaper than replacement, the additional costs that aren't in Viridian's scope one should take into account when considering this type of window replacement.
