Tom Hoffman has been in business 30 years and has a stellar record. His bid will not be the cheapest, but you have the comfort of knowing that he will use only the best materials, will do the best work and will stand behind his work.  He even sent his workers back to my house to re-clean because he was not happy with the clean-up job they did. He does a lot of work downtown, so he is experienced with working around large trees. Work begins on time and finishes on time. His reputation is so strong, he no longer advertises in any way. All new jobs are from word of mouth.

The experience has been good. I suppose there are better prices out there but I didn't find them.

Tom Hoffman is a gruff character out of yesteryear when quality workmanship and integrity still mattered. But once you get to know him and his work ethic and quality, you get to love him as did the two neighbors who recommended him to us and as we do now.Since we moved into our home eight years ago there has been a water leak around the top of the fireplace and onto the living room walss and ceiling. At least three contractors and chimney and roof experts have been hired to fix problem but none have been successful. Each time the leak recurred and the living room walls around the fireplace had to be replaced. We hired Tom to build French drains to alleviate water leakage into basement and also (we were told by one expert) into bottom of fireplace. After reviewing out plight Tom undertook the chimney leakage problem and found the leaks. He fixed leaks with A-1 flashing work and re-did the sub-par siding and flashing work of prior contractors and replastered the LR walls. Tom next built the French drains and in process unearthed previous faulty and failed French drains. Tom dug a 3' trench, inserted the PVC pipes, landscape material and tons of river rock. These drains now wrok great. Based on the quality of his work we then asked Tom to pour a new concrete patio, driveway and walkways and stairs. He honestly discussed with us the options of stamped and colored concrete, the good and bad aspects and we went with straight concrete and are very pleased. Tom reinforced all the concrete with steel rebar and poured the concrete at least 4and quot; thick. The old concrete work did not contain steet rebar and was not the appropriate thickness. All the concrete work was 'finished' by craftsman who had at least 20 years experience- what Tom called the 'A Team'. These veteran craftsman each ran their own concrete businesses. Throught the entire project Tom never took short cuts and always used top notch materials and supplies. He liked to say that the job should be done right the first time so that he does not have to come back. Even though Tom prefers to do excavating and concrete work his knowledge of all aspects of house construction was unreal. He helped us bring in good roofers and a master masonry craftsman to re-plaster areas of the chimney. We now consider Tom a trusted friend and hope he does not retire soon so we can use him for future projects. Tom and his people also left the work sites clean and tidy and hauled away all debris.

Tom stresses delivering a quality product and literally owns all details from start to finish. He runs a small company and oversees most work himself. It is generally agreed that his prices are not the lowest but you are paying in part for his expertise and assurance of getting the job done right the first time. For this type of work, that cannot be easily changed or fixed, that is important. He often has a second job running at the same time but multitasking only makes sense from a business perspective as there are times when concrete needs to cure, etc. The only limitation we'd note is that as a small company the limited number of workers can slow down a project some - we were fortunate and weather cooperated this fall. Tom is easy to communicate with and is forward-looking, always planning the next steps, addressing details before they are concerns. He has a wealth of knowledge about all construction details and that ensures his excavation, foundation and flatwork are all integrated into a complete well-thought out project. Examples of his commitment include - worrying about how the final project will look, working over a weekend to ensure foundation was truly square after a mistake was caught, working with us on adjusting project scope to assist with foundation drainage, pouring a black colored driveway with pattern that looks great and coming back in evening a couple times to ensure properly treated to prevent rain damage. We'd highly recommend him for small and large scope projects.
