The Careful Remodelers Inc
About us
We have been serving the Greater Portland Area for 37 years and we do everything from design and build additions, to remodel bathrooms and kitchens, to add a deck or window or retile a shower, to repaint a house. Many of our clients have been with us for years. We are in the business of making clients' home remodeling dreams come true and taking care of their home improvement needs. We begin by taking a client's dream and helping him or her interprete it in the form of a building plan that is feasible. Often we will be able to generate a rough price estimate before plan is prepared so client will have an idea as to whether the concept is likely to fit the budget. Once a plan has been prepared, we are able to generate a price quote. When the client is ready, construction begins. The process is usually simpler on smaller home improvement projects. We will look and listen to what the client wants and then prepare a free estimate. Residential remodeling at The Careful Remodelers is all about solving building problems. We have become proficient at it after years of practice. Some problems remain "potential problems" and never materialize because we head them off before they get started, such as choosing materials that will perform well or replacing older products like roofing, before they fail. Other problems need to be examined carefully to identify the most probable cause, at which point corrective action can then be taken. On the design side, we work to identify. What the real needs and constraints are - how existing space can be made to work better - the minimum amount of new space that will meet client needs - is this a project we can do well and - will it be a win-win situation for both parties. Construction begins with more planning - what materials and labor will we need and when in order to complete work in a timely fashion, on budget, and built correctly. We strive to do the work right the first time. To reduce the chance of a constuction delay part way through the project, we don't begin work until essential materials are available. Careful Remodelers came out to give us an estimate for installing a neo-angle shower glass enclosure. While we talked we decided to replace the shower curtain in our other bath with a glass enclosure. He agreed to check my measurements and go over the second job, even though we had not agreed to use them for either job. He gave us an estimate for the neo-angle, but gave us an open ended estimate for the tub enclosure since the glass would extend above the fiberglass and some fill would be required between the glass and the wall. He did not know totally what that would entail, but said he would reduce the price if less time would be required.
The installer came on time and was very professional. The tub enclosure was installed in two hours less than estimated and Careful Remodelers reduced the price by 2 hours labor, which was a significant savings.
I selected the tub, faucets, grab bar, and tile in the weeks before the actual work started. The work of the project started in mid August, with the removal of my old shallow steel tub, the one tile wall, and the cheap plastic surround that was on two of the sides. I even got to participate in tearing down the greenwall behind the surround, which was fun. Some interesting discoveries were made during the demo phase-no bags of money unforunately, but a piece of SIDING had been used behind the old tub faucet, and the old tub was surrounded underneath by pink insulation. I had expressed my concern when discussing this project before the work started about being without bathing, as this is my only bathroom. Fortunately, The Careful Remodelers set it up so the rough-in for the plumbing was installed as soon as the tub itself, which was on Day 2 of the project. This meant I was only without bathing for one night, which I was very pleased about. On Day 2, the tub itself was installed, the rough in plumbing, and the cement backerboard of the tile.
One snag, which from all indications was not the fault of the contractor, was that the accent tile was not available when the project started. I was aware the accent tile had to be special ordered and would take two to three weeks to arrive, so wanting to do the project in mid August, I selected both the field and accent tile around July 20. The field tile was 13 by 13 white porcelain tile, and the accent tile was 1-inch glass mosiac tile in gorgeous cobalt blue. However, for reasons known only to the tile store, they did not order the accent tile until the week of the project! That meant that my accent tile not only was not available the first week of the project, but did not arrive until September 3. The field tile (which was in stock at the tile store and thus available) was installed prior to this, leaving space for the accent tile. All of this time I could bathe, but not take a shower. I was told if I wanted to that they could put plastic up over the ungrouted tile so I could shower, but I didn't bother. Once the accent tile did arrive, it was promptly installed and grouted. The accent tile was not easy to work with, but the tile guy (named Dean) did a fabulous job. A few other surprises happened in the course of the project as well, such as framing had to be built to support the showerhead and the floor below the tub had to be leveled, but nothing that caused too much anxiety. I had been very concerned about mold and dry rot being behind the old plastic surround, but happily, that wasn't an issue.
Concluding this review, I love my new tub (Jacuzzi Luxura soaking tub), the Delta showerhead with a hand-held showerhead built in, and the beautiful new tile, especially when the iridescent blue tile sparkles in the sunlight. I do not have a TV in the bathroom, but this tub is comfortable enough to watch a movie in. Despite the tile ordering issue, I am extremely pleased with the work of The Careful Remodelers and would consider hiring them for any future remodeling projects.
