If you are looking for the best arborists in Portland to deal with your tree situation, be sure to include Chad Honl in your list of prospects. We've used Chad and his team numerous times over the years, and we've always felt like we were getting some of the best tree service around. His prices are reasonable and his work is outstanding. Earlier this summer, the Honl crew came in to prune several of our fruit trees, which they did an excellent job on -- including sharing some tips for when we want to do some light trimming ourselves. Now the latest project concerned a massively overgrown sweet gum tree, which we've tried to prune and keep in good shape over the years, with Chad's expert help. But in the end, the tree just got unmanageable (even leaving aside the raised sidewalks which the tree roots caused) and was actually a hazard with its large and heavy branches that dropped to the sidewalk. In to the rescue came Honl Tree Care, and in an amazing half a day they took the whole tree down! Even so, efficiency did not trump safety, and as always the crew took great care to avoid any possible danger to people and property nearby. Plus, they completely cleaned up after themselves at the end. We couldn't ask for more ... and needless to say, we'll be calling in Chad the next time we need arbor work.

Excellent service. Best of 4 companies contacted. Always met me on time, were quick, concise, and gave me options. Best price. Tree is 85 years old and required careful evaluation by arborist, removal of lateral weight, and thinning of canopy. Crew was courteous and thoroughly cleaned my yard and street once the job was completed.

It went great. John and Garrett were early, they got right to work and had our tree pruned in a little over an hour. afterwards, they cleaned up after themselves. we will definitely use them again.

The services were good. They were on time, a little early. They did what they said they would. They were courteous and efficient. We were happy with the job performed.

My sweet gum tree had been dropping branches. I wasn't sure if that meant it was sick, or something else. I had a couple of companies out to take a look at it. I appreciated the insight Honl provided regarding what was wrong and some options for taking care of it. I did end up choosing Honl after some negotiation. Very professional and prompt. Three men arrived to take down the tree. It was quite the job and was glad I was home to see it as it made me feel better about how much it cost to do. The stump was ground down another day. I remember being a little surprised they hadn't given me a heads up about the day the stump would be ground down, but I really didn't have too much of a problem with it. They did haul away the wood from the tree, but the bark dust from grinding the stump was left. I would absolutely recommend Honl to anyone dealing with tree issues.

Chad Honl is a professional arborist. I can't compare their price because they're the only ones I called.

I thought the price a bit steep for basic trimming and no large limbs removed. I have used Honl Tree service over three times, There was a slight misunderstanding over this most recent work but Chad has attempted to make it right. His arborists are all experienced and know how to shape and trim trees and shrubbery. As with all experts, I recommend that when you hire Honl or others that you get the entire estimate in writing, and then check at the end.

They came promptly to provide a quote. Actual work was done about three weeks later. They arrived at the time promised. Work was done quickly and they did a good job cleaning up the yard at the end. The trees looked really good when they were done.

The service was generally good. It took a while to get an appointment, but they came when they said they would. They were courteous and professional. Good clean up. The price was very reasonable for the amount of work they did. Two of the trees would have looked better if they had trimmed additional little branches (some were dead), I didn't notice until they were gone, and it wasn't worth calling them back. I would use them again, and check the work more closely before they leave.

I have mixed feeligns about Honl Tree Crae. I used them two years in a row to trim my laurel hedges and my camellia tree. The first year, they did a great job. Everything looked nice and I was able to make a prompt appointment which they arrived to on time. The second year however was different. I had to make my appointment a month out from when I called and the day of the appointment, I was told they lost my paperwork in the shuffle and woudl have to come back the next day. That was not the end of the world, just a bit annoying. The job itself was OK, a few uneven spots but overall satsfactory. What was troubling is that a week later, I happened to go to my back yard and discoevered that my downspout and gutter system had been disasssembled, most likely for ladder access to the trees, but not put back together. I was also not told it was taken apart. Since this is a part of the house we cannot see through our windows and since it was raining all week, I did not notice until a week had gone by with water streaming right down to my foundation. Luckily there was no water damage in my basement, but wehn I called to alert them of what had hapened, I never heard a response or apology to my message. Not so professional. It's a mistake, I get it, but I would have appreciated a "We're sorry." I'll find another company for next year.

The crew arrived as scheduled with all the appropriate tools, reviewed the work scope in detail with us, and then quickly and efficiently completed the work. They were very helpful and professional by explaining exactly what they were doing and why they were doing it. They removed all their debris and cleaned up the yard completely, even removing some winter debris that they had not created. We were extremely satisfied with their work and will use them again.

They arrived right on time and got down (up?) to work. They were organized, well-equiped, pleasant and polite. The two men who climbed the tall trees seemed to be very skilled, and the ground crew was energetic and efficient. The final bill was below their estimate even though they did an enormous job. I will hire them whenever I need tree work in the future.

Chad and his team did a terrific job not only doing some high pruning work keeping a tall silver birch from overhanging our gutters but kept the trees and shrubs they worked on well balanced and aesthetically pleasing as well as keeping them in good health. We wanted to avoid the hedge being cut back so hard that bare branches stuck out everywhere, and Honl Tree Care left us with a gentle shearing that was just what we hoped for. We recommend this company highly, and look forward to working with them again in the future.

I called and they came over later that week and gave me an estimate. We scheduled it for a couple weeks down the road and they arrived right on time on that day. They took their time and did an amazing job on the trees. We are so happy with the way they look. They chipped up all the branches for us and cleaned up the whole area really nice. It started raining pretty hard while they were working but they kept right at it and got the job done. I will definitely be calling Honl Tree Care again.

We had just bought our first home (and first yard to deal with). The entire backyard was taken over by a giant apple tree (of doom). The tree had been mistreated, so went crazy with sucker branches and stopped giving apples many years past. The trunk was almost 3 feet thick, and one main branch was dangerously horizontal and looking to break. Chad was one of several that we interviewed and got estimates for. The Honl bid was in the middle of the price range. We chose him mostly by personality and our gut feel. He was friendly, answered our questions, and gave options for us to consider. On day-of he and the workers we on time and got right to work. They finished early, and cleaned up the area nicely. We really appreciated the attention and professionalism. After the clean up, Chad even spent some time telling me how to go about planting and caring for my new replacement trees. Now I have a mini-orchard, and when it's time for pruning I will be calling Honl.
