Ernie Champan came out to give us a bid. He was very friendly but we should have noticed right off the bat (he's about 70 years old) when he didnt get up on our roof that something would be off with the job. He gave us a bid which ended up being about $3000 less than what we ended up having to pay. It was summer so it took them a few months to come out and start the project. During a Sunday dinner party at our house around 6pm an older (dirty) man was found in our driveway throwing down sheets of plywood and dropping of supplies. Not only did we not receive a phone call that he was coming, but it was a Sunday evening while we were entertaining. A week later the roofing supplies were dropped off at our house (not sure why the plywood was put down on our driveway a week earlier on a Sunday) again with no phone call to notify us. Luckily I was home because the truck they were driving was way to big for our driveway and they wanted to cut branches off my trees so they could back the truck in. The next day work started. Huge mess. Came home to find out that since Ernie had not gotten on top of our roof or looked in the crawl space to see what was underneath the shingles that they had to lay all new plywood which added an extra $3000 to the cost. We were not called or notified in anyway. Had I not come home to find them putting it on I would not have know until I got their bill. The job took an extra 3 days to complete. They left roofing nails & shingles all over our driveway. I paid the bill full in cash without much complaint. There was no thanks for the business or apology for the lack of communication or extra cost. Would not use them again. Way too many other roofers out there.
Description of Work: Clow was hired to do a full tear off of our roof and re-roof the home.

These guys were supposed to call before they showed up but didn't. They put a really smelly coating on my small garage roof while I was out running errands for 3 hours. When I got back myself & my neighbor called the fire department because we were alarmed by the smell and thought someone had a meth lab nearby. A huge waste of taxpayer dollars that could have been avoided had they just let me know they had been here. When I called to complain they just laughed. Unbelievably, I called them again 4 years later to see about getting my gutters cleaned. The guy on the phone was really rude. They had charged about 150 dollars to clean the gutters on my 900 square foot in 2004, but now wanted 400 for it, because "Lady, we won't even come out to your house for less than 400 dollars". Guess the bad economy wasn't hurting these guys. They spend a bunch on TV advertising and then won't even pay enough to have someone polite & knowledgeable answer their phones. Very bad way to run a business. I'd never use them again.

My experience with them is that they tried to railroad a poor roofing job through. I think they were trying to take advantage of me because I am a woman and they didn't think I knew anything. They left my yard full of debris. They added a trim board where flashing should have been. They painted it an awful color. It didn't go with the character of my vintage house. I had a difficult time getting them to make changes. I collected two big bags of chunky contractor debris afterward.

When they finally showed up the job went well and it looks like a good job. But it took them more than 6 months to do it after I signed the contract. I realize that it was a rainy year but we never got a follow up phone call or an estimate on when it could be done. I believe if I did not call them they would of never showed up.

Seemed organized and had materials ready. Showed up on time everyday and finished job in three days.Cleaned up after themselves and did not destroy the yard. A different roofer with experiance in replacing the supports came out just for the supports; he explained what he was doing and was very knowledgeable.

1. In the summer of 2008 we telephoned for an repair estimate because we had a leak in our entry hall and living room ceiling. 2. Ernie Chapman came out and told us that we didn t need a roof repair, because the roof, being only 10 years old was in fine condition. 3. However, he did point out that the siding on the west side of our north facing dormer was in need of repair and that it was, indeed, the source of the leak. 4. We had Clow repair the dormer siding and we paid your invoice for $ 1,565.00. 5. In late December of 2009, I telephoned Ernie Chapman to tell him that the leak was back in exactly the same location. Snow had melted on the roof and the resulting water was dripping into our entry way and living room ceiling. The resulting ceiling damage has caused us to have to have it re-plastered and repainted, incurring an additional major expense. 6. Ernie had a roofing repair person come to the house and examine the problem. He said that it was indeed the roof (making the $1,565.00 siding repair unnecessary) and he caulked a bead of caulk along the width of our porch roof, not mentioning that there would be any charge. 7. Thinking that this was a make-good and easy solution, I assumed there would be no charge, especially since all the repairman did was apply caulking, a process that took about fifteen minutes. However, Clow sent us an additional bill for $250.00. 8. We proceeded to have the plaster repaired and the entire living room and entry hall repainted. Here's hoping that their caulking fixed the leak. We wait in fear.
Description of Work: We hired Clow to fix a leak in our roof and they completely mis-diagnosed the problem. Read the entire story below.

Absolutely horrible! We are now getting ready to have the complete roof torn off and replaced. We have had leaks in the house, garage, the soffets, the only place so far not leaking is around the chimneys and that's amazing since they sealed them with tar and not flashing/counter-flashing. The owners did make an effort about 2 years ago to fix the leak in the soffets but couldn't figure out why it was happening and had John come out to tar glue down the tabs, saying it must be because of wind that it was getting underneath. I've had another good roofer, who has since retired, repair the incorrect installation of the shingles in areas where we had leaks in the house/garage and all the 8 roofing companies I've had out for a bid can't believe all the things that are still done wrong on my roof. I didn't even tell them what I knew was wrong, waiting to see if they could all find it, they all did. Appalling installation. Bottom line-they took advantage of a sweet little lady and now the new homeowner has to have a complete new roof done after less than 9 years time with this roof. I'm just hoping there isn't any dry rot. I really don't put mean messages out on Angie's List as a way of life, these guys are just that bad. They need to be stopped!!! I'm frustrated, but even if there was a way for a judge to make them redo my roof, I wouldn't want them to. They just don't do it right.
Description of Work: I bought the house after the previous owner died in 2004. She had paid them for adding the addl layer to her already existing roof(1 layer deep-comp). I noticed when we moved in there was water spots on the underside of the enclosed soffets but figured it was from before she had the house re-roofed. Oh boy was I wrong.

The experience was good. It took three days for them to complete the work. I did ask for special service. I used to have a old fire furnace here, long before I owned the place. I had them remove it because I like gardening and they did pack up the bricks nicely, so that I could use them. The whole thing was so fast and they were very good at cleaning up stuff. I only found very small pieces here and there. They are very good in getting it all up and right.

I was promised that my roof would be done within a specified time period. In fact, I deliberately mentioned to them that I had read reports on Angie s List about their failure to meet projected time frames and said: If I hire you, you have to promise to give me a firm date." I was assured that they would live up to their word. Well, the date came and went, no calls nothing, I called for weeks trying to get someone to tell me when they would be out to complete the job. When I finally was able to get a hold of someone, I was told that I would be looking at three more months, no apologies, and no concern on their part. I fired them on the spot. If you cannot be live up to your word going in, especially when your customers tell you that they are concerned about a particular issue like your reputation for failing to meet your deadlines, you should not be trusted to do work at all. Dishonesty = Lack of Integrity. Lack of Integrity = Poor Work Ethic, period.
Description of Work: These guys talk a big talk but when it comes right down to it, they don t walk the walk, especially when it comes to their honesty in scheduling work. I had a complete tear off scheduled with these guys, they failed to show up or call to ever get it done.

THEY DID NOT START WORK FOR MONTHS AFTER CONTRACT SIGNED. HAD TO CALL SEVERAL TIMES TO BEG FOR START DATE. AFTER THEY FINALLY STARTED WORK THEY REMOVED ALL ROOFING FROM BACK OF HOME AND DID NOT COVER PROPERLY. HEAVY RAIN STORM FLOODED INSIDE OF MY HOUSE WHICH RUINED MY WOOD FLOORS. THEY DID NOT HELP WITH CLEANING UP WATER AND MESS INSIDE MY SOAKED INTERIOR. AFTER ROOF WAS INSTALLED I HAD SEVERAL LEAKS INSIDE MY HOUSE. AFTER INSPECTING ROOF I FOUND TWO TORN SINGLES & FLASHING INSTALLED ON GABLE ENDS ONE SIDE ON TOP OF FELT AND ON THE OTHER ON TOP OF FELT DOES NOT MEET CODE. FLASHING ABOVE GUTTER DROPS HAS GAP ABOVE GUTTER WHERE WATER LEAKS INSIDE HOME. FLASHING AROUND CHIMNEY WAS NOT REPLACED PER CONTRACT WATER LEAKS INSIDE AROUND BOTH CHIMNEYS. CALLED OWNER OF COMPANY SEVERAL TIMES HE REFEREED ME TO THE SALESMAN. CANNOT GET THEM TO REPAIR THE MESS THEY MADE OF MY ROOF. THEY DO NOT RETURN CALLS OR DO REPAIRS. THIS JOB IS SO MESSED UP IT WILL HAVE TO BE RE-ROOFED.

We had used this company for a roof replacement and trusted them to do this work. I paid him $200 up front and he said that they would do the work. It took from February to July before someone came out because the company kept stating that they were too busy. When the man came out he said that there was nothing he could do and that I would need new gutters that would cost $1,800.

They were the only reputable roofing company in Portland willing to install 3-tab shingles and guarantee them for 30 years. Thus, they were the best deal. Everyone else wanted to install architectural shingles for $300 to $400 more. Plus, Clow Roofing guarantees their work for 30 years (life of the shingle), whereas for other companies I called, it was 5 years. The only problem is, they were booked solid. I signed the contract with them in August, and they couldn't get to the roof until November. But they did the job in the rain, and so far so good.

Poorly. They said they could start within 6 weeks which was part of our decision to go with them, but it was several months before I ended up calling them and they finally managed to show up just as the rainy season started. No one ever gave me a call. They found that they did need to strip part of our existing roof and let us know before they did that, but never told us how much more it would cost. They didn't have a foreman on site during the day, but just someone who would drive by and check on their crew every so often. There are staples and shingles in my bushes, there's a bag from roofing tiles on my front porch. The roof itself looks okay, and we haven't had any drips inside with the hard rains this year. I think the Hispanic guys they hired to do the job were pretty decent, but everything about the management and customer service was HORRIBLE.

I found him to be both pushy and repetitive. His bid was the least professional of all I received, and some of his information was in contradiction to all other sources. Very polite in setting appointment and showing up on time. After looking at my roof, told me that he didn't want to do repairs. He was pretty abrasive and mildly antagonistic. He only wanted to sell me a new roof. I showed him the roof inspection report that recommended repairs. He said that other roofers probably told me I needed a new roof. I told him that I had three other bids and none of them said I needed a new roof. I guess he just wanted to sell me a new roof. $$$$
