From the beginning with Dan to the end of the project everything went very smoothly. No surprises on the amount, it was just as Dan estimated. Mac and his helper (sorry forgot his name) worked non stop to finish the fence that day. I looks fantastic !

Don Fahey was our estimator. He came out promptly and on time and gave us an estimate the same day. The work was scheduled shortly thereafter. The utility locators people missed one date, but that was not Rick's issue. The job - old fence dismantled and hauled away and new fence built - was done in one day. The workmen were Jeremy Weisenban ans Nick Holcomb. Our experience is that those who do the work are critical to the quality of the job. These guys are excellent.: You should ask for them. And their communication skills are as good as their building. My wife wanted to put a special piece of hardware on the gate. They worked with her to find a way to do it. We felt they cared as much about the construction of the fence as if it was theirs.
Description of Work: Built a substantial fence along our property line in one day. This included a separate gate.

I contracted with Rick's to put in a double gate between the corner of my house and the fence they had previously built. I told them they would need to anchor the fence to the side of the house, but the estimator insisted they could core drill a hole in the concrete and then sink a hole for that post, even thought the power, gas, cable and TV clearly ran through that area. The locating service said it was a no go, but apparently Rick's didn't bother to get any feedback or check the site before showing up to do the work. I got the inexperienced crew, with one guy who needed instructions to do the simplest tasks. They proceeded to open up to oblong holes in the brick on my house, and then make two holes into the framing which were nowhere near level or perpendicular to the side of the house. They then proceeded to try to pound a 4x4 onto the all-thread they inserted (with much trouble), with a huge sledge hammer, which made the whole house shake. I finally had to pull them off before they destroyed the whole corner of the house. Rick's refuses to pay for the repairs, instead insisting on sending a mason of their choice. At this point, I do not trust Rick's, or anyone they select to touch my house again. In 15 years of building homes, I never saw such incompetence, nor dealt with a company who's every employee refuses to take responsibility for their poor work. The "manager" who called me wouldn't let me speak, instead insisting on covering his butt with statements designed to win in arbitration with the Contractor's Board. Do yourself a favor, and steer well clear of these guys. If you have a problem with their work, you will not be taken care of.
Description of Work: They ruined the side of my home in a failed attempt to install a pair of gates.

This company was very responsive and punctual with their estimates and planning. They requested half of the full cost up front and completed the job on budget. The structure they built is very sturdy. On the day of the estimate we had discussed using a lightweight wire fencing as the "walls" of the enclosure, much like a smaller gauge square mesh wire fencing used for chicken pens. I even sent example photos to them to show what we wanted. However, on the day of the job the crew showed up with a much heavier wire fencing roll like what is used for horse fencing. This wire fencing was much thicker and difficult for them to bend, cut and work with to wrap. The wire was so thick that they had to actually hammer the mesh into the support beams to get it to lay flat and stay in place. They got the job done, but this style of fencing doesn't look as nice as the originally proposed lighter product. It's total overkill for our 8 to 12 lb house cats a looks like it was built for something much larger like a primate cage. The work crew was very nice and hard working and they were just following the instructions they were given, but the end result does not have the high quality appearance of the work displayed on their website. It is a sturdy, but rough, and cage-like structure. We will have to do a fair amount of finish work to get this to look nice, but will have to work with what we have now. Unfortunately, the way the horse fencing was attached makes it pretty much impossible to remove and replace, so we will have to work with what we have now. We we so excited about this project and our pictured outcome, that it was hard to come to terms of the disappointment at the end result. However, it is functional and the cats love their new outdoor space and spend most of the spring and summer out there lounging in the sun and watching birds. Which is the most important part.
Description of Work: Installed a pergola structure over our existing 10x10 concrete patio. The intention was to wrap the pergola in wire mesh fencing to create a safe enclosed outdoor area for our cats. We call it the "catio".

Both of the employees that came out spoke English as a second language which made communication more difficult. For the most part the fence they built is of good construction. The reason that I mark them down on professionalism is that in three different locations they ended up cutting a foot off three of the fence boards to straddle obstacles that were easily moved/removed had they just mentioned them to myself or my neighbor. Those three spots look ridiculous! They knew that I was home on the day they constructed the fence, but made no attempt to alert me to the problem. Disappointing, especially since the rest of the fence was so well built.

Overall, I am very pleased with the quality of the work. The fence looks great, and the space between the slats is quite small, around a quarter inch, so it provides a very high degree of privacy. One thing I didn't realize is that this type of fence has 'sides' which means my neighbors get to see the fence posts while I have a smooth fence, but no one has complained and my lower neighbor seems to welcome the privacy and the rear neighbor doesn't see it much. So, i guess the sided-ness of the fence if fine. I learned about the 'sides' to the fence when the Bruce peppered me with a quick series of very relevant questions, and we clarified the last details before I left to go to work. My impression was of a top notch craftsman and between him and the helper the work to set the posts and cross members was done the first day, and the rails put up by the second day. Done and done. If I have a bother, it was the estimator's behavior when it came to money. I liked Greg personally and he did a good job on the estimation, but my impression was that he seems to have been stung by people not paying, so is quite aggressive about payment. Most bothersome was that this included Greg's calling me after the job to pressure me to pay the balance before even receiving the final bill, saying "They will cross in the mail." I didn't care for this, since I want a bill to look at before paying and when I received it, it did need adjustment. We negotiated the bill to the proper dollar amount and I received $65 back off the originally billed price. So, overall, I am quite pleased with the work, the price is fair for quality work, and it was done quickly and with no fuss. Indeed, I sent a tip to the installers which was graciously refused and sent back along with the billing difference. I'll definitely recommend Rick's to my friends.
Description of Work: Greg Shaull came out promptly when I expressed a sincere interest in putting up a fence, and we spent a time discussing my ideas for the fence, a retaining wall and its goal, as well as fence types, and the no-sag gate for the uphill side of my house. He took his notes back to his office and a short time later I had his estimate for $7472 with a list of items we'd discussed considered. The two Rick's Fence installation guys Bruce and hi came out after I paid half the estimation cost and over two days put up a very nice privacy fence around the back side and lower side of my yard. It is somewhere around 280' of fence, with a 104' of 2.5' retaining wall made of 2x10s. I live on a hill, so I asked that they add the footer to act as a retaining wall to allow me to level my yard, and to raise the fence to block the view into my downhill neighbor's yard. That is part of the cost. They don't do concrete, so used 2x8's to build this 2.5' wall along the bottom of the extra long posts. That allowed the downhill portion of the fence rails to be raised on the longer posts to the full height to match the height of the fence that runs along the back of the house. Due to the slope, the guys also negotiated a tricky transition with my neighbor's fence along the corner there, and did a great job of cleaning up debris and filling that area with dirt so it was finished. I also asked for their no-sag gate in the 5' width, which is a great addition to the overall fencing, and works superbly. The width I chose is perfect for allowing access if i need to bring something like a bobcat back there to move dirt around or have a new shed built.

Great right to day #3. Then, being caught in a bind so to speak, we had to accept a decking product which we do not like. The final decking was very competently installed, is smooth, secure and has excellent joints. All trim is well done. As the people at Rick's did not really know the product they were selling, we had no way to earlier ascertain that it would not be what we wanted. Do not know how the consumer could judge this in advance.
Description of Work: We recently hired Ricks Custom Fencing, Hillsboro, to install a new deck. We visited their show room to view samples and then met with a representative at our home to discuss the project and select the decking material. We selected Tigerwood, because of its distinctive character, and signed a contract for the installation. The first stage of the project went well. Our old deck was removed quickly and without problems. Then Rick’s workers, Joe Perini and Phil Persany, began the construction of the supporting structures of the new deck; their work was exemplary. Every time we looked out to see their progress they were leveling, squaring or otherwise measuring every construction they made. The supporting structure was all supported by 4x4’s in concrete. The foundation is sound in every respect. A perfect foundation. The problem started on day three. The truck with the Tigerwood arrived and it did not resemble in any way the samples of Tigerwood that we had seen at Ricks nor the sample of Tigerwood that I had in possession. I questioned the wood and after many phone calls was given the word that this was indeed Tigerwood and that its appearance would change to what we wanted after exposure to sunlight. As our deck is more than 70% in the shade, (which should have been apparent to the representative who came to our home to examine the project) there would have been no transition of the delivered wood to match the sample with which we had made our original decision. I ordered the wood to be reloaded on the truck and my wife and I went back to Ricks Show Room to solve this problem. The representative we had originally signed the contract with had no idea that the Tigerwood would be different from the samples we had been shown. Nor did anyone else in the office that day. We had to quickly and reluctantly find an acceptable substitute and in the end were left with having to accept a deck surface that we had originally rejected. We selected Azek, a synthetic material, which doesn’t have the character of wood and as I thought in the first place would look about like “wall to wall carpet”. In the end, we have a well constructed deck we do not like but which will never rot nor need yearly maintainence. As we find that compromise to not be sufficient, our acceptance of that trade off is not yet accepted. Our disappointment is reflected in the "Quality" rating of "Bad" for the final apearence of the deck surface, not the quality of the construction, the materials used or for the foundation which we deem excellent.

The wood was delivered as promised but the quality was poor. Nearly 20% of the boards were unusable (cracked, loaded with knots, badly bowed) We sent those boards back on the truck after speaking with the office people. The next day we went to get the "premium" replacement boards we paid for and they were not pleased when we inspected each board before loading them in the van. It became clear after rebuilding our fence with the boards from Rick's that the quality was generally not what we expected from "premium" wood. There is a lot of warping. We had Rick's install a fence for us 20 years ago at a previous house and were satisfied with the work and the wood. We were able to do the work ourselves this time and are very dissatisfied with the wood they provided. We will go elsewhere to complete this project. I suggest others shop around ... Rick's was a poor choice this time.

We contacted Ricks for a estimate of a rebuild using no maintenence decking. We were just going to rebuild in the exact way it had previously been and had figured out the approximate price based on a flyer from the company. They came to our house and redesigned the deck including a roof (which we didn't have previously) and gave us a large amount of covered usable space for under my estimate of just the deck. They also built us a privacy screen in the front yard. We couldn't be happier with the results and now have a covered patio that looks great and won't rot. They were very punctual and had everything finished within three days. They were very friendly and best of all I didn't have to lift a finger.

Rick's estimator came out and previewed the area to be fenced. I had a budget and Rick's estimator worked with me to arrive at a price that was within my budget. That is, the estimator suggested a less costly fence topper than originally requested and gave me a new price that showed options for if we nailed up the boards ourselves. Rick's crew showed up on time and worked diligently to accomplish the project in the time allowed. They also cleaned up after themselves.

It was exactly as we anticipated... is beautiful, the installation crew was very knowledgable and were done when they said they would be! Rick's wasn't the least expensive of the three bids we received, but they were the most helpful, recommended what we needed and told us why, talked about grade of materials when it came to pricing, installation procedures, on and on and on... these guys know their stuff!! WE ARE THRILLED!

Ricks built for us a large deck (frame set) They do all framing, steps, rails and homeowner installes the 2x6 cedar walking surface floor and trim and applies stain & sealer....they provide homeowner with all materials to complete homeowner part of deck! As I got close to fininishing the floor I did not have enought screws....THEY MADE ME PAY FOR THE NECCESARY SCREW TO FINISH DECK....after having already paid the entire $9700(which was supposed to include these screws). I discussed this with David Gerber (salesman who sold me frame set deck)......He explained I had to buy screws but that if anything was left over ...RICKS WOULD BUY THAT MATERIAL BACK FROM ME....I knew the cedar 2x6 flooring was going to have some extras by then ...but I did not know how much...I specifically asked David about this & how much extra they would pay me,he readilly agreed to buy back extra 2x6 and quoted price. Nextly I was short on every size of trim lumber &the trim screws.....which I then had to buy at home depot....since Mr gerber told me I would have to buy anything they had shorted me . Upon Deck completion I took in extra 2x6 cedar boards back to Mr Gerber @ Ricks......He said I should not have had any extra boards & then said Ricks must have accidentally left too many 2x6 boards & Thanks for bringing them back!!! I was LIED TO DIRECTLY BY DAVID GERBER...who brought out his boss and double teamed me over this issue....I finally got partial compensation back from them but only due to my persistent complaing!! I found the workmen to be excellent,Ricks never called for final inspection, but when I complained about 3" difference in stair steps they did fix issue. I found salesman & office manager to be arrogant, condescending & Mr gerber is a bold liar.....He Even said he had never said this which was calling me a liar. I have a great deck but would not use Ricks ever again

On the whole, I am very impressed with the new deck Rick's Fencing and Decking built for me. Everyone that I dealt with was friendly and professional. My only concern (and it is a small one) is that the employees doing the actual construction work seem to be spread a skosh too thin. They were not able to get the job done in the time period originally provided to me by the service agent because (1) they were finishing up prior projects, and (2) the original time estimate might have been a bit ambitious. That being said, though, the employees built an excellent deck for me and kept me apprised of the progress. The crew manager actually showed up on Saturday, which is typically his day off, to finish the job.

Our old deck (the part that was exposed to the weather) needed replacement. Rick's Fencing and Decking people promptly quoted me a price on the work to be performed. They were able to complete the job within a couple of weeks of their quote. Luke, their carpenter and his helper did a good job of removing the old wood and replacing it with a well constructed new one. It is aesthetic pleasing and is an upgrade from the deck we replaced. Overall, the experience was positive. Their final bill matched their bid to the dollar.

On May 11th we had Ricks custom fencing tear out and install about 200 feet of new fencing. Bruce and Adam were the installers doing the work. Scheduling took 3 weeks from when we placed our order to having the construction portion start. Bruce and Adam arrived when they said they would and worked hard for 3 days removing the old fence and installing the new 6 foot cedar fence, along with 100 feet of retaining wall. Shortly after the installation was completed, unacceptable gaps between the fencing boards started taking place. I called Rick's fencing and spoke to the stores manager, Tom, about this problem. Tom, wanted to see what was going on so we scheduled a time for him to come see what we were seeing. Tom completely took care of the gaping problem and went over and above with satisfying us as customers. We all know life isn't perfect and things happen. I would use Rick's Custom Fencing and Decking again because of the way Tom dealt with the problem and the craftsmanship shown by Bruce and Adam. We are very pleased with our new fence.
Description of Work: We had our old fence removed and replaced with a six foot cedar fence for Ricks Custom Fencing. We had the fence builders, Bruce and Adam also install retaining walls in certain areas of this project. We could not ask for a more professional team than Bruce and Adam, we are very pleased with their craftsmanship and cheerful attitudes. A problem that did develop was quickly addressed and completely solved by, manager, Tom. We are loving the new look our fence gives our backyard. Tom, Bruce, and Adam did an outstanding job.

Weather was a problem at first, and they had to work in rain and mud, but it didn't slow them down. Start to finish, it was a good/better/BEST job. We also bought their stain, and were able to gett the fence protected in between rain squalls- we expect to enjoy this fencing for years to come
Description of Work: We accepted a bid from Rick's Custom Fencing in Hillsboro to install fencing around our property. It had not been fenced before, but had a old,, half-dead evergreen hedge, which had to be removed first. It was a big job, and we liked the price that Rick's gave us, plus the assurance that they would make sure we were happyy with the results. Happy??,We were thrilled. They exceeeded our expectations in every way, from making changes that we requested, to a super crew that put it up, including some gates, decorative fencing on one side, and other details too numerous to describe. It was the best experience we have had with a contractor here! We cannot thank Rick's enough, or reccommend them more highly! The Landons

Ricks crew was very punctual and very efficient. They arrived when they said they would and fininished the job on time. The owner even made an aditional visit the next day to ensure I was still happy with the work.
Description of Work: They replaced a 60 foot section of fence with a gate, and made sure to resecure the existing poles the new fence was mounting to. The fence was a would good neighbor fence with dog ears to march the remaining existing fence.
