It went exceptionally well in both cases. In my house, Bill (the repairman) cleaned and checked the furnace and then tried to determine why a couple of rooms weren't getting heat. He checked the attic duct work and it was fine. He then checked air vents and determined that whomever installed the furnace some years ago put some insulation in some of the duct work and it had dislodged and was blocking the air through some of the ducts. It was a problem that the company who had installed the furnace had just given up on (said it was the house, not the furnace). Now all is well (and warm). At my sister's house the furnace had been shut off for several years and Bill came and got it all going again. Because the gas had been shut off, the gas company they told us it would be 2-3 days before it could be turned on. Then Pat at Honke Heating called the gas company and was able to get them to come the next morning because my sister was recovering from an operation. Way above and beyond.

A wonderful experience. From the initial home visit to the installation of everything, Honke Heating did a great job. The only sticky time was waiting for the call to schedule the work once I accepted the bid. I finally had to call to get things started, but once I did, the work was done quickly and efficiently. I was most impressed by the professionalism of each phase of this experience. The initial visit was friendly and efficient, it didn't take long to figure out what needed to be done and how to get there. The actual measuring and decisions on placement came next. Again, the company representative was courteous and knew what he was doing. All phases of what would happen next were explained. The heating and air conditioning units were installed with precision and great care. The installers took care as if they were working on their own homes. The entire system is performing wonderfully. Site cleanup and removal of all old systems was great.

Overall, I would have to say they completed the work to meet my standards. While I was quoted 3 - 4 days for the install, it is just finishing on 3 weeks for the install. I also had to call them and remind them, that they need to come out and finish the plumbing. I also had to call and remind them that two items needed to be finished, before the job was done and I would pay. I recommend anyone doing business with Honke, to carefully check the contract. The number that they but on the bottom, is not the final price. In my case they added Electrical, Plumbing and permit charges in the upper portion of the contract. These are NOT included in the total on the bottom of the quote. I would say that this is a questionable business practice. This also increased the quote by $1,125.00 Double check the total quote before agreeing.

In the past two years I had several estimates done for A/C. I called Honke and Rick came out for an estimate in March. We wanted to pay cash. He honored our March estimate in May allowing us time to set aside enough money to get the A/C and not worry about monthly payments. The installers were friendly and knowledgeable. On the Sales end Rick was informative but not pushy. He patiently answered all of my question and took several phone calls from me prior to and after purchase. I had decided 3 other times not to have A/C installed because the Sales person was just to pushy. I did give a B for responsiveness because when you first call the main office you do have to wait awhile for someone to get back to you.

I (and other contractors who have since looked at it) believe I was oversold on the size requirements of this replacement pump. They sold me a 3 ton unit when a 2 or 2 1/2 would do. This was a "top of the line" Lennox unit and the compressor failed in one year. A second compressor did not last much longer. When a third compressor failed, they refused to fix it without a significant charge. I told them that this unit was obviously a lemon. Other contractors have since told me that there were faulty welds in the replacement compressors, and the work quality was what killed the compressors. After writing to the company directly and to the BBB, their lame response was that it failed because the furnace filter was dirty, which is a load of crap. Yes it was moderately dirty after a 6 month run in the furnace, but that will NOT fail a whole system, and it was always changed religiously. They were looking for an out from a defective product and that's all they could come up with.

They gave the level of service appropriate for the price we paid. Of the many salesmen we talked to as we sought this work, Rick from Honke was by far the least slimy. He was straightforward and never pushy. Before we had agreed to sign on with Honke, Rick said he would check a couple of code issues with the city, and to my pleasant surprise, he did so. Scheduling the job was pain-free and the work took place only one day off due to an employee illness. Once the workers were here, they were extremely courteous, clean, and ''low maintenance.'' They kept me updated throughout the process and it all went very smoothly from start to finish.

Honke Heating's service man failed to identify the problem and wrongly urged me to simply replace my 15-yr old furnace. The Owner and the Service Manager (SM) agreed with me that that "service" was lousy. Honke Heating's schedule's conduct on the phone earns a FAILING GRADE for professionalism, but I gave a "D" for that category and overall because the Owner and SM listened to my feedback about what had happened. The Owner and SM seemed to be unaware of the unacceptable conduct of their subordinates. I fear that if I had not gone directly to the Owner, his customers and his business would potentially suffer (and still might if not remedied). In sum, I was treated shabbily at a vulnerable time for me and my wife and children. I was present when the service men from Honke Heating and Hoodview Heating were at my home, and I have documentation corroborating my statements that are available on request (which I have already shown to the Owner and SM).

THE TECHNICIAN, MIKE, CAME ON TIME AFTER HAD CALLED TO SAY HE WOULD BE HERE WITHIN 30 MINUTES AND WAS VERY PROMPT. WHEN I FIRST CALLED AND TALKED TO THE COMPANY I WAS TOLD THEY WERE VERY BUSY, BECAUSE OF THE TIME OF THE YEAR, AND THEY WOULD CALL AND MAKE AN APPOINTMENT. I DID WAIT FOR A WEEK AND THEN CALLED BACK AND WITHIN A DAY THEY WERE HERE AND I WAS VERY HAPPY WITH THE SERVICE.

THE SERVICE TECH. ARRIVED DURING THE TIME FRAME PROMISED, WAS NEAT, COURTEOUS, AND DIDN'T MIND ME TAGGING ALONG AS HE DID THE DIAGNOSIS. THE PROBLEM TURNED OUT TO BE ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, AND COREY GAVE GOOD ADVICE ON HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THE HEAT PUMP AS A HOMEOWNER. WHILE THE PUMP IS OLDER, HE SUGGESTED FOLLOWING SOME STEPS THAT WOULD HELP TO EXTEND THE LIFE OF THE UNIT SEVERAL MORE YEARS. COREY WAS ESPECIALLY HELPFUL IN THAT HE TOOK THE TIME TO PROVIDE RECOMMENDATIONS, AND OPTIONS FOR WHEN WE WILL NEED TO REPLACE THE UNIT. I GOT THE SENSE THAT EVEN THOUGH THE HEAT PUMP WAS OLD, IT WOULD OPERATE, AND HONKE GAVE ME AN HONEST ASSESSMENT OF THE SITUATION. I WILL USE THEM TO REPLACE THE UNIT IN THE FUTURE.

WE HAVE A TWO STORY DAYLIGHT BASEMENT HOUSE AND WANTED TO CONVERT THE HEATING TO GAS WITHOUT HAVING TO TEAR UP THE FLOORS. HONKE GAVE US THE OPTIONS WE WANTED AND MADE SURE THEY WORKED FLAWLESSLY. THE HEATING DUCTS WERE INSTALLED ACROSS THE ATTIC AND ACCESS THE BASEMENT ROOMS VIA DUCTS DROPPING DOWN INCONSPICUOUSLY IN CLOSET CORNERS AND ALCOVES. INITIALLY, DAMPERS WERE NOT INSTALLED, BUT WHEN WE WERE GETTING PLENTY OF HEAT UPSTAIRS AND TOO LITTLE IN THE BASEMENT, THEY CAME BACK OUT AT NO COST TO US AND INSTALLED DAMPERS SO THAT THE HEAT WOULD CIRCULATE EVENLY THROUGH-OUT THE HOUSE. THE INSTALLERS WERE CLEAN, EFFICIENT AND KNEW THEIR STUFF. WHEN THE INSPECTOR CAME OUT TO ASSESS WHETHER OR NOT THE JOB WAS COMPLETED ACCORDING TO CODE, HE WAS VERY PLEASED WITH THE WORK THEY'D DONE.
