My insurance company totaled my roof following a hail storm. I located Big Sky on Angie's List and called them. Jason came out and measured and submitted an estimate. He was professional and courteous. I waited several months before I hired Big Sky. There was no pressure to hurry up and make a decision. I obtained three other estimates, all for a greater amount, from hundreds to thousands of dollars. I had some questions and Jason was very helpful and knowledgeable. The work was done within a few days of my signing the contract. It took a day and a half and the clean up was immaculate. Jason came out a few days later and inspected the roof, walked around to be sure the clean up was complete. He asked if I had any questions or concerns. I didn't because the job was done perfectly. I have decided to hire Big Sky to paint my house because of this experience. I received a $100 discount because I found them on Angie's List.
Description of Work: Big Sky removed my old shingles, vent pipes, flashing and a power vent. They installed 30# felt, Elk Prestique 30-year shingles, new power vent, flashing, etc. They hand nailed all the shingles vs. using nail guns that some roofers use. The work is warranted for 5 years.

These people don't know what they are doing! Before I had the roof done, my roof never leaked. My insurance company is the one that said I needed a new roof so they wrote me a check for about $8100 to fix various things in the house. It took this company (9 men total) 2 months to locate a leak in the roof. Then they tried to push it off as being "something they didn't handle" (even though I had an estimate with the work on it) these types of problems. We called out a chimney person and he said it was the roofing company's responsibility. Then the roofing company fixed the problem (I think....until it rains again), even they "they don't do that type of work"! They never showed up until 9:00 AM and then proceeded to eat breakfast on my front lawn before working. They never asked to use the bathroom and I caught workers in my back yard urinating up against my back fence like a dog!!! The shed people did good work, no problems. The walls/ceiling work was also a mess. They gave me an estimate, then while working, they turned around and said they couldn't get to the living room area that needed repairs!! They turn around and deduct parts only for that job. They never even deducted the labor they would have charged me so I had to pay that and I don't think that's fair. Then, on top of that, I go in the garage and there's damage on the wall like something powerful, and round, black marks on my wall. Part of the wall is caved in as well. I would never recommend this place to anyone because I wouldn't want them to go through what I had to. On top of everything else, I'm deaf, so when they gave me a time, I would have to sit by my window so I wouldn't miss them and then they would be late all the time. These people have no business owning a business. RESPONSE TO BIG SKY COMPANIES’ REPLY TO COMPLAINT:I see Big Sky Companies has denied there being a leak. I have many neighbors and also a chimney man who will testify that this company was here for 2 months attempting to find a leak. Initially my insurance company was called out for a fence that blew down in a storm. The insurance adjuster said the roof needed replacing. When I called Big Sky, Robert Yancy, the roofing supervisor, came out and inspected the roof. He told me I did not need a new roof but the insurance company told me to have it replaced so I hired the company to do that. Up until that time, my roof never leaked.Once Big Sky removed the original roof and replaced it with a new one, that’s when it started to leak. This company is lying and saying there was no leak and I have emails to prove there were. I am deaf and communicate by email. If you would like to see those emails, let me know, and I’ll be more than happy to forward them to you. There came from Big Sky Companies and talk about the roof leak!!! If anyone needs further documentation as to why they should go elsewhere, let me know and I’ll be happy to send them the emails as well. Being deaf has its benefits and one of them is….I always have copies of the conversations we have because I have to use email to communicate.
Description of Work: I had 3 different jobs done by this company; (1) entire new roof, (2) shed knocked down in back yard and ceiling/wall work done in garage and living room area.

Response from Big Sky Roofing
I know there is a communication problem because the homeowner is hearing impaired; however, if one understands the facts it is difficult to see how a complaint arose from them. The leak did take a while to track down. The first callback, we re-sealed the chimney flashings as that was the area about the leak. The second time we came out for the leak, we completely re-roofed the slope that includes the chimney as well as an adjacent slope. Re-roofing the adjacent slope was precautionary because water sometimes runs quite a ways from its source. We installed ice and water shield (a rubberized leak barrier) under all the new roofing and completely re-flashed the chimney. All of this was done in the interest of stopping a leak that we, like the homeowner, were assuming was coming from the roof itself. When the same leak recurred, we started looking for other causes. Having eliminated the roof as the source of the leak, we suspected the chimney cap. We do not generally work on chimney caps since they are a specialized area outside of roofing. We had The Chimney Shop come out and he agreed that the cap was the cuase but couldn’t replace it because it was a one-piece unit. He suggested we tape the split int ht metal with aluminum tape. We did that and the problem was fixed. He never said that it was roofer’s responsibility as the homeowner states, and I’ve included a letter from the Chimney Shop to confirm this. The homeowner was not charged for any of this even though there was no fault in our workmanship. I would also like to say that any time we actually set an appointment; we were there at the scheduled time. The roof repairs did not have a scheduled time as they are done ASAP. The living room ceiling could not be repaired because an earlier ceiling joist repair had left the ceiling out of level in that spot. The bow in the drywall could not be fixed without first correcting the framing. The entire cost of that portion of the repair was deducted. I’m not sure why the homeowner thought it was only $20 since it was explained to her at the time, but I’ve included a copy of the original detailed estimate along with a copy of the payment to confirm this. The “powerful, round, black marks” on the garage wall that the homeowner mentions are tire marks. Since we never parked in her garage, we declined to fix them. We did, however, repair the leak damage that was caused by the chimney cap as well as the chimney cap itself at no cost. With regard to the homeowner’s charge that we painted over wet drywall I assume she is talking about lightweight spackle used to cover nail heads. This involves a tiny amount of material, which dries almost immediately and doesn’t create a problem so long as it is dry enough that the paintbrush doesn’t pull it out of place. We’re certainly not perfect and when we make a mistake, fixing it is a priority. In this case, however, the only mistake I believe we have made is a failure to communicate effectively. The fact is nobody in our office knew the homeowner was unhappy until we read the Angie's List report. The homeowner did send an angry email to Robert at the same time as she wrote the report, but at that point I have to respond to Angie's List rather than try to correct her misunderstanding of why things were done as they were. My sense is that Big Sky might have done a good job on this minor project ($1500) -- if they'd ever gotten around to it. During four months -- from October 2008 to January 2009 -- I touched base regularly with their contractor, who committed to showing up at our house at least a half-dozen times. He never did, and I finally gave up trying. The job involved installing two skylights (already purchased and not included in their bid) and replacing rotten wood (false rafters, etc.) in an opening in the roof over a patio. Obviously, this wasn't high on their list of things to do, and I knew it, going so far as to discuss it with the contractor during the bidding process. He told me that all jobs were important in their own way: he had a crew to keep busy and jobs like this one allowed him to "fill in" days between larger projects. So I knew that this job would be scheduled according to what was convenient for them. What bothered me, in addition to having the process drag out for months, was that I always had to re-initiate contact -- rarely did the contractor call me after a missed appointment or check-in to apologize or re-schedule. Months later, beginning late this past spring, we started receiving messages from the central office, asking if the project still needed to be done and if we'd like to follow up. I suppose things have slowed down now and they're more eager to pick up even smaller projects. Even thought the repairs haven't been done, I can't be bothered: service like this doesn't recommend itself.

Jason, the roofing supervisor, came to estimate the roofing needs. He was very professional and was honest to say that I did not need a new roof but needed repair instead. The previous shingles were fine; the problem was what is called "nail pops" because the previous roofer had stapled the shingles rather than nailed them on. During our discussion, we talked about the other exterior repairs I intended to do and his company does these too. So, separate bids were made for the exterior painting, wood repair, and guttering in addition to the roofing. All four jobs were eventually finished to my satisfaction and were quite professionally done. However, each of the jobs, with the exception of the wood repair, took several tries and/or a longer time than necessary to complete. The first roofer who came arrived on a Friday afternoon and evidently was ready for the weekend. He barely started. Jason came the following week and agreed that this had not been done at all correctly--to make a long story short, it eventually took three trips for someone to get it right and this involved Jason coming with someone to finish as he oversaw the job. The painters did an excellent job but left tape and paper on the roof and did not paint the door jambs--they painted the doors while I was not at home and consequently painted them with the doors shut. They had also agreed to bring me the remaining paint but they had to be reminded and brought this back, again, on the third try. Jason told me the guttering would be done separately and that the team who did that was considerably behind. He assured me this would be worth the wait--and it was. It is excellent. Only one small concern--they went off and left the old guttering in the yard. I would have appreciated it if they had hauled this off--but, again, an excellent job. The office did not seem to be very good at relaying messages but each of the supervisors gave me their cell numbers so I was able to reach them directly. My suggestion would be that they not allow workers to leave a job site until the supervisor comes by to sign off on the work--would have saved all of us a lot of time. Again, I do feel I received a very professional result and the price was more reasonable than I expected.

BSR was by far the low bid on replacinig the roof because most roofers are not interested in doing small jobs. (Home Depot has a minimum of $2000 and wouldn't even bid!). Jason gave me a good estimate, the materials I wanted at no extra charge, and couldn't have been nicer to work with. If you don't count the days it rained after I signed the contract, they were on time. Now that the shed has a new roof, he is even going to help me find someone to fix up the inside of the shed. I highly recommend this company!!!
Description of Work: My shed needed a new roof, so it was completely replaced with one to match my house. It hasn't rained yet, but from all appearances, the roofers did an excellent job very quickly and professionally, and they cleaned up just as well. Also, they spoke English, which was great since I could tell them what I wanted.

When they prepared the quote, they said it would take one day. The crew started on a Friday morning. They had to come back the next day and didn't finish until around noon. The extra time they needed wasn't a big deal to me. They rented a dumpster and placed it in my driveway and hauled all their trash away.
Description of Work: They did a total replacement of my roof. As part of the job, they tore all the old shingles off my roof and replaced all the sections of plywood sheathing that were bad. I have a small house, 1100 sq.ft. The work was done several years ago, but I didn't join Angie's List until recently.

We received quotes from 4 different companies in late October 2008. We decided to go with Big Sky Companies for our roofing needs, as they were the most professional and were reasonably priced. We had also seen what a great job they had done a few months earlier with our neighbor's roof. We signed the contract and faxed it in on the 2nd of December. They called later that same day to inquire our preference in the color of the shingles, but did not give a date as to when they were planning on working on our roof. At 9:00 a.m. on the morning of the 4th, the material was delivered, so that was my first hint that my roof would be replaced soon. Imagine my surprise when I came home at 11:30 that morning to find half my shingles removed and noone there (they had gone to lunch). I called Jason and he apologized for the lack of communication. My roof was finished in two days. The roofers were very professional and didn't take more than one/two breaks a day. They were curteous and answered any questions that we had. Jason came the following week to collect payment. The workers had not contacted management nor had they informed us about the decking that needed repaired so the charge was dropped, also the flashing on our chimney was not priced in the quote as needing replaced, so that charge was also dropped. We were only billed what we were quoted for. When Jason collected payment, I inquired whether the flashing would be painted. He said he'd send someone over, but it might take awhile. When we returned from vacation in January, I called Big Sky to again inquire about the flashing being painted and Jason came over within 2 hours of the phone call and painted the flashing himself. All in all things went well. We ran into a few little bumps along the way, but BIg Sky compensated and I would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: We had a 17-year-old, 2-tab, 2-story, steep roof that needed replaced, as the shingles were falling off when the wind blew. Big Sky Roofing tore off the 2 layers, installed 2 turbines, and upgraded our shingles to a 30-year laminate. They also replaced some decking and the flashing to our chimney.

Larry came and gave an estimate and explained what they would do in addition to the painting (i.e. caulking, removing nails, priming, repairing some wood framing around one window). Once we decided to hire this company, it was only a matter of days before the work crew arrived and started pre-work details (power-washing, scraping, masking off areas, etc). One of the crew members (Don) even helped us remove some old guttering that was not part of our contract agreement (much appreciated!!). The next two days were spent painting. The three people on the paint crew were very friendly and allowed our grandson and nephew to come and observe their work and showed them how some of the equipment worked. The end job was excellent and we could not be happier. We have received many comments from our neighbors on the great job. Clean up after they were done was excellent.

At the time of estimate I stressed that I wanted the area over our porch flat because it looked wavy due to the wood or underlay. I was assured this would happen. The workers came 3 mornings around 9am and did work until dark. They cleaned up everyday. The only problem was none of them spoke English but when we had a question they would call someone on their cell phone but still it was frustrating. They were nice though and hard workers. We are happy with our roof but I do think we may be getting the "wave" back. Jason left a message last week wanting to know if anyone had been by to look at that area and I called to leave a message that I had not been contacted but have not heard back yet. I am trusting that they will come back and look and correct if needed as this was my MAIN concern.. {Stay Tuned!} They provide 4 8ft. boards to replace any rotted or damaged boards on your roof but be prepared, you may need more. This IS on the contract but we needed about 11 or 12 more 10 foot long boards and it can be costly. They do not know what it will take until they tear off of course and you do want it done right so just be prepared. I would recommend this company and our roof does look good but I'll let you know about the "wave" later, fixed or not or why it could not be fixed.

We needed a new roof with a rain guard and soffit repair due to the lack of rain guard. We also wanted to change the wind turbines as they leaked into the attic when we had blowing rain from the south. Big Sky sent someone out to give us an estimate in a timely manner, the only negative was the price of shingles were sky rocketing so the estimate went up $700.00 by the time we could lock in the contract. A crew came out to start on a Friday and the materials weren't there yet, but they came out on Saturday and finished by Monday. Someone forgot to check the box for the rain guard, they did have the materials when they replaced the roof, they promised to come out again and put the rain guard up before the next crew started on the soffit repairs. I will have to report on the soffit repairs separately as they were 3 weeks out on that schedule and will be doing the repairs next week.
Description of Work: Removed two layers of shingle, replaced most of the decking, 30 year shingle, ridge cap and rain guard. Separate repairs to the damaged soffit. The price spent includes the soffit repairs and decking replacement.

Found Big Sky through Angie's List. Called and had quick response, even though all roofing companies were overloaded with the work they were doing. Robery Yancey came out with samples, gave us a cost for the job, and we hired Big Sky to do the work. Their crew arrived when we were told they would, completed the work, cleaned up the mess, and left. There were some cosmetic problems but after Robert came out to do the final inspection, he had it taken care of very quickly. We are very satisfied with the work that Big Sky and Robert did, before, during, and after the project.

The estimator showed up on time and the bid was comprehensive and appropriate for the work involved. The materials showed up as scheduled and the roofers were here the same day to begin removal and replacement. The roofers did excellent, quick work and left each night with the roof protected in case of rain. All nails were hand done, not an air compressor in sight. The resulting roof is superb looking. The billed price matched the estimate and the cleanup around the house was extremely good.

See above comment. Very impressed with pride the roofers took in their work.
Description of Work: Replaced roof on approx 2300 sq ft house that had leaks and needed venting. Cleaned up every day. Took special care to avoid damaging plants and shrubs (some damage was unavoidable). Worked constantly. Very little down time. Started on time. Work completed close to estimated time. Communicated well with me. Have already recommended to 2 other people for roof jobs.

They are quick at their job. They were very friendly and I would definitely use them again. They gave us a very fair price. They were courteous and professional.
Description of Work: They came in and checked the rubberized boots that go through the vents from the bathroom to the sewer and replaced them.
