On this particular service call, our plumbers removed and disposed of heavy tree roots that had entered the sanitary sewer due to the age and condition of the existing line. Further diagnosis with a Fiberoptic camera confirmed these findings. A quote was provided to make permanent repairs on the sewer. The second option is to continue to attempt to maintain the cleaning of the sewer with heavy equipment. This, from our experience, tends to become costly and inconvenient. Unfortunately, once sewers reach this deterioration point, they typically continue to decline, not improve, over time. However, either way, we consult with our customers to assist them in making an informed decision. Thank you for your consideration."

"Once tree roots enter a sanitary sewer, there are limited options: you can take a reactive approach and have a professional drain cleaning company come in attempt to cut out the roots while the sewer is backed up. This approach has a tendency to become very inconvenient and messy; or you can become more proactive, and establish a preventative drain cleaning program. Depending on the severity of the root infestation within the sewer, this can be done on a quarterly, semi-annual, or annual basis. This, along with a professionally installed backwater valve, is a viable option; however, this will not guarantee that you will never have to deal with a difficult sewage backup in the future. The only permanent way to eliminate tree roots once they have infested a sewer line is through some level of excavation / sewer line replacement, depending on the situation. This is more costly on the front end, but it offers a permanent, long-term solution. Modern equipment, such as an underground camera, allows both the customer and the plumber to make an informed decision together. Thank you for your consideration."

However, as it relates to frozen and burst water lines, professional plumbers agree that the piping itself, generally plays a very limited role, if any at all, during these very difficult and unfortunate situations. The contributing factors are the following: severe cold weather, sub-zero windchill, lack of heat, lack of insulation, drafts, and location of the exposed water piping in basements, crawlspaces, outside walls, ceilings, and garages. Although we spent a considerable amount of time educating our customers, and general public alike, these factors wreaked havoc across Northeast Ohio all winter long.
