"Thank you for your kind words, and for being a part of our Bay Furnace family."
"Thank you for your patronage. We appreciate your business."
The company promptly scheduled a service call. Technician showed up and diagnosed the problem. Part was ordered and technician went on another call while waiting for the part. Technician returned with the wrong part. Technician left again and returned a few hours later for a third time with the correct part which took 20 minutes to install from beginning to end. Price was $518.00 for the part and labor plus $84.00 diagnostics. Out of curiosity, I contacted the parts supplier and found out that the part retails for $140.53. This equates to being charged $377.47 for 20 minutes of LABOR alone above and beyond the diagnostics which was a separate billing. To me this equates to price gouging.
I called the company and spoke with a manager about my concern. He relayed that the company uses "book" pricing and they need to cover overhead, benefits, uniforms, etc. Later I received a phone call from the company indicating that the parts supplier provided the company with a $50 discount on the part because the wrong part was initially provided. This discount would be refunded to me based on my pricing concern. However, the company made NO ATTEMPT to adjust the exorbitant labor costs of $377.47 for 20 minutes of labor.
"We have always worked hard and prided ourselves in our effort to be prompt with our service calls, and also to be as competitive as we can in a very competitive industry. We are always trying to keep our prices at a reasonable rate and still maintain the quality service a dependability that our customer’s expect from us. Many companies – including Bay Furnace – service all brands. Unfortunately it is impossible to stock every part from all equipment of all brands. We pride ourselves in having a diversity of brand suppliers that work with us as quickly as possible. In this particular case, we traveled to pick up a part and we’re given the wrong part. The supplier was able to get us the corrected part, and we immediately made a second trip to that supplier. This happens in all lines of service and the correction was made quickly. Because of the cost of normal overhead, we make every effort to find a pricing schedule that keeps our customer’s equipment running and enables us to stay in a successful business. It is because of ongoing efforts within our pricing that helps us continue to be a reliable service company now and in the future. Normal markups on parts and labor costs are mandatory in any service industry to maintain that business. In addition, we also make it a priority to explain our service call pricing prior to the visit, and make sure a clear repair estimate is given, and okayed, before any work is completed. We value every customer, and want for them to be satisfied with Bay Furnace service and will continue to monitor feedback – even when not so favorable – to continue to improve where we can. Facts: Invoice charges $84 diagnostic + $24 water panel + $468 ($518-$50 vendor credit) = $576 total invoice Customer was quoted before doing the repair $518. Supplier gave us the wrong part – their fault. We then went down and got the correct part. We called them and they said for the problem giving us the wrong part they would give us $50 off for inconvenience. Our cost on the part was $173.60 ( if we would have done the markup not flat rate part cost would have been $434 + labor ($150 for 1 hour) Marty’s total time was 1 hour to diagnose call, .75 to install and find that had the wrong part and .50 to go back the 3rd time to install the correct part. National average time to install that circuit board is 1 hour 2 minutes."
Originally met with Paul Dooney, project manager, in June 2014 to quote the project. Our house was all electric, with radiant glass heat panels and no ductwork. I wanted a gas furnace with central air and the necessary ductwork. I knew it wouldn't be an easy job to retrofit ductwork into a house that had never been designed for it, but the basement family room was already torn up from a flood in May, so I figured this would be the logical time to do it.
Paul spent quite a bit of time to look over the house, measure room sizes, determine heat and cooling requirements and figure out a logical layout of the new system. I received a quote one week later with three optional systems. I went with the best and most quiet system and signed the agreement in July 2014. I preferred to wait until September to schedule the installation for my convenience and to also put it into a less busy season for the installers.
Bob and Marty were the installers for the duration of the project. They worked on it for a full week in September, then came back out in a week to spend almost another full day to finish it. They were both well-experienced technicians and performed their work in a neat well-executed manner. The registers, return air ducts and thermostat were installed with such care that the surrounding finish on the main floor was undisturbed. All cutting to fit ductwork was done from the basement family room ceiling below. There were several unanticipated building obstructions that necessitated a rerouting of ductwork and also rerouting of a drain line, but Bob and Marty handled it all. They were polite and professional, and cleaned the site before leaving at the end of the day.
My wife and I are very pleased with the new furnace operation over the past six months. Now we are looking forward to the days when it will finally get hot enough to try out the central air conditioning. Our neighbors used Bay Furnace four years ago when they went with a new heating and cooling system and were very pleased with the installation and service. We are also very impressed with the workmanship and function of our new system as well.
